12802497, Should the government even count race in the census?

This is how the Germans exterminated the Jews. This is how banks redline areas or decide where to implement predatory lending. Insurance companies use it to raise rates. This is how they know where to underfund the schools at. It helps people find the whitest neighborhoods possible to live in. We know the downsides. I'm wondering what are the benefits?

and disparate inequalities.
12802503, yes, but the information should not be used for those reasons.

People can always use information or manipulate information to help or harm other people. That does't mean the information should not be collected. Without that information, the ability to help goes away right along with the ability to harm.
12802506, End post. Information doesn't hurt people. People hurt people.

It's also how we know where to track funds that are targeted for underfunded areas, how we track the country's history, migration patterns, plan for federal funding for schools, infrastructure, traffic, staffing, job growth, how your favorite stores decide to open up franchises, etc.

Better to know than not to know. Ignorance is never a good look.

I used to work for the Census back in 2000 just in the interest of full disclosure.

absolutely

mexicans are finally acknowledging their black population
debating on what name to use on the daggone census

this whole don't acknowledge it
we are all the same thing
DOES NOT WORK
look at latin america
you STILL get treated badly but now you just have no name for it
and they point to the US as the land of racism

shit the rest of the world tries it as well

lack of information means lack of acknowledgement
leaner the lesson that we are having with not acknowledging police murders

12802603, Government counts race everywhere else, why not in the census?

If the information being misused is the concern don't worry-- stats aren't needed if you want mistreat a group of people.
