12781955, two part Jackie RObinson Question Posted by mistermaxxx08, Wed Apr-15-15 01:11 PM
first of all the movie was cornball. Home boy is a good actor, though but still that film was whitewashed.
anyway two part question on Jackie Robinson
is he considered a civil rights leader and Icon?
also why does it feel he wasn't as embraced as Muhammad Ali?
i dig Ali big time, and Jackie in my grandparents era,etc.. loved the man big time.

12781993, I think his politics had a big role in why he's not viewed like Ali Posted by placee_22, Wed Apr-15-15 01:31 PM
From what I know, he was pretty conservative personally and politically, whereas Ali was ...Ali.
to answer part 1: honestly, I'm not sure. He's definitely a trailblazer, I'm not so sure about his leadership in Civil Rights.
Somebody probably has more background on his activism.

12782014, Ali sought the limelight in a way Robinson didn't. Posted by SoWhat, Wed Apr-15-15 01:44 PM
partly b/c Ali participated in a solo sport and Robinson played a team sport.
and their personalities were different.
but generally Robinson wanted to allow his performance on the field to speak for him whereas Ali wanted to be more outspoken and overtly radical w/his political sentiments and lifestyle choices.
>is he considered a civil rights leader and Icon?
yes.
>also why does it feel he wasn't as embraced as Muhammad >Ali?
he is but since he was more low key his appreciation is also more low key.

12782019, I think he is embraced as such but not to the extent that he should be Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Wed Apr-15-15 01:48 PM
Unfortunately I think he has gotten more shine from the (white) establishment in pursuit of that messiah to be like "LOOK, HE CAME ALONG AND EVERYTHING WAS BETTER!" than he has from black history. I guess it has to do with the era he was in, before everything was shot straight into your living room in living color. Then again guys from Ali's same era like Arthur Ashe don't get their due either, but there are other reasons for that, I suppose.

12782039, IMO the basic difference between Robinson and Ali Posted by Selassie I God, Wed Apr-15-15 01:59 PM
Robinson: "allow me to be a part of the society"
Ali: "Allow me to be a part of the society on my terms"
