12779232, parents: tablets made for small kids.
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Mon Apr-13-15 09:48 AM
let's talk about this since nobody has eaten a chickstar from taco bell before.

looking into getting an innotab 3 for my son.
if you have an iPad or something high end like that for your kid, great
but i'm not getting one for my kid. lets keep it leapfroggy

pros/cons?

any others i could be looking into besides innotab?

12779277, you're gonna think im a bamma. but small screens aren't for children.
Posted by Deadzombie, Mon Apr-13-15 10:14 AM
interacting with small screens fucks their heads up:

12779282, real talk. I got an Innotab 3 off of Ebay for a niece for $25.
Posted by Fishgrease, Mon Apr-13-15 10:20 AM
12779302, i don't even know why i didn't think of that
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Mon Apr-13-15 10:34 AM
just bookmarked an innotab search on ebay.
his birthday's coming up and that might be the move
12779283, my baby loves her innotab 3
Posted by JellyBean, Mon Apr-13-15 10:20 AM
she's 4. the only hang up I have with it are the cartridges, she never keeps up with them. Once she realized it was something she could learn from, she started using it more frequently.

I like that you can check their progress, see what they are excelling at and see what they need help with. I love the fact that it has Wi-Fi but they can't actually get on the internet.

I did a lot of math apps and reading apps.
12779305, cartridges? UGH
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Mon Apr-13-15 10:35 AM
def a downside. but that's dope that you can see their progress.

is the wifi just for downloading apps?
12779360, you can put things
Posted by JellyBean, Mon Apr-13-15 11:01 AM
in their little inbox and they can feel like they are doing the app purchasing lol she loves thinking she just bought an app for herself.

the wi-fi also syncs their process.

she does have a little carrying case that holds her games and the tablet...they only other thing I don't like is the camera doesn't have a flash...so you have to be in a VERY well lit area.
12779485, hell what *adult* tablet has a flash for the camera?
Posted by Fishgrease, Mon Apr-13-15 12:19 PM
12779586, I have yet to see a tablet with a flash on it
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Mon Apr-13-15 01:06 PM
and, with the exception of video chat, taking pics with a tablet is still idiotic, no matter who's doing it.

12779284, Why not an Android and just make sure it's locked down?
Posted by TheAlbionist, Mon Apr-13-15 10:20 AM
Those aimed-at-kids tablets seem like a really good way to guarantee you'll be making an eBay listing in the next 2 years.
12779310, because i want something that was made with little hands in mind.
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Mon Apr-13-15 10:37 AM
and i don't expect him to care about it for more than 2 years.
by the time he's 5 we can look into something else.
he'll be old enough to request stuff he likes.
12779296, Kindle (fire)
Posted by John Forte, Mon Apr-13-15 10:29 AM
12779314, maybe when he's older. i may want one of those for myself tho lol
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Mon Apr-13-15 10:38 AM
12779381, this gets my vote too
Posted by GirlChild, Mon Apr-13-15 11:10 AM
esp bc they have the fire thats made specifically with your kids in mind and have a warranty so if your kid breaks it they will replace it for free.

plus all the leapfrog stuff, you end up having to buy extra shit to go with it. mil bought k the books but you need a separate reader to go with it and that shit starts to add up.
12779568, UGH you make sound arguments
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Mon Apr-13-15 12:59 PM
I got a month to figure it out
12779479, Have you considered a Nabi or Sprout tablet?
Posted by The Wordsmith, Mon Apr-13-15 12:16 PM

Since 1976
12779482, never heard of it. googling now.
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Mon Apr-13-15 12:18 PM
12779552, my kids have the Nabi. they love it.
Posted by jrocc, Mon Apr-13-15 12:52 PM
12779829, ive seen a few and i think the ipad mini is best :0)
Posted by bonamie, Mon Apr-13-15 03:36 PM
i also like the amazon kids tablet as well
they have a two year warranty
and it has a great case

the nabi has a good case too but i dont like it as much as the other two
using my 2 yo as a test study
it goes in that order as well
12779859, I Got Him a LeapFrog AND an Innotab 3
Posted by RexLongfellow, Mon Apr-13-15 03:54 PM
He didn't really take to either of him.

He LOVES the old iPad though...and I heard you from the OP. But the thing is, the apps (especially kids apps and educational apps) are so much cheaper in the long run than to keep buying cartridges for the tablets.

Not to mention he can watch his Pocoyo on Youtube...if you can cop a new or even used iPad or adult tablet (someone mentioned Kindle Fire), do it. There's more options on it for the kid.

But between LeapFrog and the Innotab, I'd go with the LeapFrog
12779884, i can't afford an iPad for myself. so yea no iPad for the kid.

>i can't afford an iPad for myself. so yea no iPad for the kid.

Real talk: the only reason I even have an iPad is because my brother gave me his old one.

I'd cop a LeapFrog then
12780031, lol @ the bs justifications ppl come up with
Posted by seasoned vet, Mon Apr-13-15 07:04 PM
to avoid getting an android or apple tablet

when all that other bullshit wont do everything you're getting it for and will end up costing MORE money in the long run

shits #hilariouslysad

12780037, Won't somebody please think of the children!
Posted by Deadzombie, Mon Apr-13-15 07:15 PM
12780041, why are you such a miserable person?
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Mon Apr-13-15 07:20 PM
are you going through something?
why cant you just reply with pros and cons like everyone else did?
my reason for not wanting to get high end shit is because i can not afford it (and want something durable and made for kids)
i can barely afford to get an innotab for thw kid but the price point seemed more reasonable
girlchild came with some useful points for going with a Kindle
if you have some useful info share it no need to be a dick
12780058, dudes miserable...
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Apr-13-15 07:51 PM
but at least he is consistent
12780180, people dont like honesty
Posted by seasoned vet, Tue Apr-14-15 12:36 AM
and ive came through with the pros and cons before
but when people post like their mind is made up....

i didnt feel like it this time because it really is funny how instead of people openly asking for help, they come with a list of NO's that only get in the way of their goal

i find humor in that approach

for example
the innotab costs a little under $100 right?
you can get a refurb iPod touch from Apple for $150 shipped

had price been made an issue in the OP as a genuine concern you'd have gotten that answer sooner

12780152, My children "use" my OG iPad
Posted by L_O_Quent, Mon Apr-13-15 10:39 PM
And old iPhones
12780229, mine will do the same if it still works 2 or 3 years from now
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Apr-14-15 07:28 AM
at what age should a kid stat using a tablet?

12781308, Mine have interacted with them since around 2
Posted by L_O_Quent, Tue Apr-14-15 09:11 PM
And could sit on the couch supervised and play a little around 3
12780221, Don't get the innotab yo. Get the cheapest refurb/used iPad OR Samsung Tab
Posted by FLUIDJ, Tue Apr-14-15 07:10 AM
you can find for real...
Both Android and Apple have a ton of GREAT apps for kids that are minimal cost....MANY free ones on Android.

I just bequeathed my 1st Gen iPad to our 2 year old and for the most part it runs all the kids apps just fine. I'd looked into the Nabi's but heard awful things about the Nabi app store.

At the end of the day, you'll be happier and he'll be happier.

LInks.. I'm seeing refurb/used Galaxy Tab 3's under $100 and Tab 4's around $120.:

12780224, Forgot to add that, the more popular Android tablets (Galaxy Tabs, Nexus, etc)
Posted by FLUIDJ, Tue Apr-14-15 07:22 AM
have a ton of bumper style cases that you can put on them to make them more kid friendly.

I'm also seeing 1st Gen & 2nd Gen 7" Nexus tablets for under $150 even as low as $100. Which admittedly is still pricey....but with the amount of free kids apps on Android, it's a good purchase that should last them several years.

12780456, Do not get a leapfrog
Posted by Sha, Tue Apr-14-15 10:03 AM
that shit is heavy and wack.

i'd say if you have a cellphone provider...see what specials they have and give him the free tablet.

sprint was running a deal on if you got another line, you'd get a free tablet.

you can customize it anyway you'd like and it'll have the apps he actual want to use.

the downside to kidcentric tablet is the accessibility. you'll have to purchase their software and such to use on the tablet. and to me that's a waste. when you can download free apps to entertain the youngin.
12781332, Second the Fire
Posted by hardware, Tue Apr-14-15 10:44 PM
cheaper than the regular tablets, but you won't have to buy all that extra Leapfrog shit when you can get developmental apps for like $3

plus its something you can use too. they make some durable cases that are kid friendly.
12781429, I strongly advocate for the Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition. Here's why:
Posted by placee_22, Wed Apr-15-15 08:25 AM
This one ---> http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LOR524M/ref=fs_ket

1. It's durable as hell- my rough ass 8 and 5 year olds haven't broken it yet.

2. Price is good- especially for what you get

3. Unlimited access to books/games/videos- for a small monthly fee. If you already have prime I think it may be less.

I have purchased a Nabi and while it's good, the kindle wins for the aforementioned benefits and for the simple fact that it has a common charger (micro usb). That damned Nabi has a different charger and it's a pain if you're traveling especially. Plus they short out real easy (on my 3rd one).

I won't even go into Leapfrog, VTech or any of the others, because they're simply not worth it.

Storage is an issue on the Kindle though, so be aware that you probably won't be able to keep a bunch of movies or music on it. But if you have steady wifi access, it's the best bang for your $
12781452, I could even give her a Kindle Fire...with a cracked screen.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Apr-15-15 08:37 AM
Works fine just has a cracked screen. It's collecting dust in the crib.

Sha, Inbox if interested.
