12776272, haha, it depends. as stated in the other post.

dress shirt is just that, a shirt to be worn with a suit/tie.

a button up is a shirt with buttons that is worn casually ie. flannel, plaid, western style, etc.
12776274, I've always said button-down, not button-up
Posted by KosherSam, Thu Apr-09-15 09:54 AM
12776275, It's button DOWN.
Posted by AnaStezia, Thu Apr-09-15 09:55 AM

Posted by abcdmetrius, Thu Apr-09-15 10:09 AM
I wear a lot of pearl snaps so I have to differentiate between that and button ups.

On a side note I hate when I forget that I'm wearing a button up and start treating it like a pearl snap. I look really silly trying to rip a butting shirt off.
12776308, i never thought abt it.. but I realize I call it a button down

Posted by KiloMcG, Thu Apr-09-15 10:25 AM
12776363, button-front is probably safest
Posted by Selah, Thu Apr-09-15 10:44 AM
"button-down" can be used to highlight collar buttons

"dress shirt" wouldn't make sense for flannels, demin shirts or something like this: http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/86698?feat=504190-GN2&page=lakewashed-chambray-shirt-slightly-fitted

"button up" doesn't even make sense (do you actually start at the bottom?) and sounds kinda like something my 3-year old would call it

in any case i wouldn't trip because it ends up in one of those "you know what they mean whatever they say" areas
12776335, Jay-Z probably made "button up" famous
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Apr-09-15 10:29 AM
12776337, nah, i called em that my whole life.
Posted by KiloMcG, Thu Apr-09-15 10:30 AM

12776356, what if it isn't a dress shirt, though
Posted by John Forte, Thu Apr-09-15 10:41 AM
12776357, then i wouldn't wear it.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Apr-09-15 10:42 AM
but i refer to all of those shirts as dress shirts.
12776364, If i'm tucking it in, its a button up
Posted by Cenario, Thu Apr-09-15 10:44 AM
if i'm wearing it out my pants, its a button down.

The right answer is however you do the buttons though lol.
