Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Apr-01-15 04:08 PM
I see this shit A LOT in Charlotte. What type of shit is this?

I saw a taxi driver wearing Beats yesterday morning.
12769780, thats that uneducated country-action.

12769798, i hate mountainbikers that do this
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Wed Apr-01-15 04:34 PM
you are on a single track trail shared with all kinds of other traffic, going 15 mph on dirt...
12769839, as long as you don't have on some noise cancelling joints...
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Apr-01-15 05:13 PM
you're good. I bike HELLA miles with headphones on...but I can still hear shit like car horns and other bikers/runners around me.
12769855, im torn with this.
Posted by Deadzombie, Wed Apr-01-15 05:24 PM

You could see his bone poking through his calf. It didn't break the skin but it was clearly out of place.

12770058, Not true at all. I'd venture that even driving it's little more than an annoyance.

Do deaf people NOT drive?
Do deaf people NOT ride bikes?
Joggers...shouldn't they be lumped in to this??

Why?
Because you can still hear with headphones on, and hearing is like maybe the smallest percentage of your senses needed to operate anything on a daily basis..vehicle, bicycle, your fckin legs, etc.....
12771094, its illegal in some places for a reason
Posted by gusto, Thu Apr-02-15 06:49 PM
worse how? and if you in a car and doing it and get hit, prolly wont die, on a bike getting hit is always more fun.

deaf people can drive/bike and there is obviously an inherent risk in doing so.
deafness vs actively listening to something else that's supposed to be distracting is 2 different things.

joggers going approx 5-10 mph (elite) vs a bike going up to 30 mph. if you dont think that's different than thats cool. they ban headphones in a lot of marathons for that very reason.

biking is already dangerous in certain cities. why make it worse.
do it, have fun. as long as you dont crash into me and mine, i dont really care.

12771609, cyclist and runners should have the same laws...
Posted by CyrenYoung, Fri Apr-03-15 12:16 PM
..you mentioned that cyclist are more at risk because of the average rate of speed.

unfortunately, most people forget that joggers/cyclists are often forced to share the same space on the road.

having a jogger/runner (wearing headphones) suddenly break left or right without checking for oncoming traffic is a constant issue (esp in large metropolitan areas). every time i've witnessed this, the jogger/runner's response was:

"..my bad, i didn't hear/see you approaching..."

it even happens with pedestrians wearing headphones, stepping off the curb into the street.

that's why i always ride with a whistle, chirping whenever i'm approaching to pass (or near crowded intersections).

the onus to be alert/aware should be on EVERYONE, not just cyclist/motorist.

..and miles to go before i sleep...
12771100, the deaf comparisons don't work.

the issue isn't that drivers listening to ___ via earbuds or headphones can't hear what's around them (like deaf ppl) it's that they are DISTRACTED by what they're listening to. they are dividing their attention between driving and listening to ___. distracted driving is dangerous.

12771115, you & gusto actin like 15" woofers & 1,000watt amps ain't a thing..
Posted by FLUIDJ, Thu Apr-02-15 07:41 PM
Personally....i'd never drive with headphones off the strength of I stay with a quality sound system in my whips.....

But on the bicycle I wear headphones majority of the time. I can hear fine with them on. They make ear plugs that are designed to allow ambient sound in, most good sports style head buds are designed this way.... and them cheap ass iPhone plugs are such a poor fit that they let ambient sound in by default....

I'm not arguing the legality of it.....I know it's illegal...
12771120, yeah, I can't even imagine riding without music...
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Apr-02-15 07:47 PM
but cycling specific headphones are designed to let outside noise in. I literally can hear Sean Price and that F-150 coming up on my left rear with no problem.
12771136, sounds like a darwin award in waiting to me.
Posted by gusto, Thu Apr-02-15 08:19 PM

>I'm not arguing the legality of it.....I know it's illegal...
i just said bikes are worse cause you gonna lose in an accident basically everytime. little margin of error. why make it worse.
dumbasses in car accidents (major or minor) walk away scratch free many many times. bicyclists dont.
what are you arguing? that loud car stereo systems are worse? um sure.

12771215, i'm arguing that loud music is loud music......
Posted by FLUIDJ, Fri Apr-03-15 07:07 AM
no matter the source.

12771708, who said anything about loud vs loud
Posted by gusto, Fri Apr-03-15 01:18 PM
even earbuds cranked to 3 on a bike or car is dumb. this is a post about headphones not loud ass stereo systems. but do you.
12771162, ...and driving with that shit cranked is an ordinance violation in many places.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Apr-02-15 09:23 PM
But yeah, driving with music blasting from speakers ain't as distracting as driving with headphones or earbuds.
12771216, it is. how is it any less ?
Posted by FLUIDJ, Fri Apr-03-15 07:08 AM

"Seasons may come and your luck just may run out, and all that you'll have is some memories..."
12771615, you cut out your environment with earbuds and headphones.
Posted by Deadzombie, Fri Apr-03-15 12:20 PM
it totally affects your equilibrium and spatial sense.
12771139, in city i can understand a bit more
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Thu Apr-02-15 08:23 PM
because your field of view is better

on the trail though your sight is limited, sound is very important. please ride with one ear in!
12771214, yeah, I don't do any trail riding....but I can see your point with it..
Posted by FLUIDJ, Fri Apr-03-15 07:06 AM

12769835, I know the shit was illegal in Michigan for the longest
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Wed Apr-01-15 05:11 PM

12769846, How do you know they're not on the phone?
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Wed Apr-01-15 05:17 PM
Those hands-free laws have given folks an alibi for wearing headphones while driving.
12769847, i totally need some 300 dollar beats handsfree
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Wed Apr-01-15 05:18 PM
12769852, 100 bucks buys you an in-ear with microphone
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Wed Apr-01-15 05:22 PM
Does the iPhone come with Beats yet?

Maybe dude had a over the ear model but my point is that the enforcement of the whole "no earphones will driving" thing has gotten really relaxed because of the handsfree laws.
12770027, that is pretty dope
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Wed Apr-01-15 11:11 PM
about the mic

ya i think its unsafe, but hard to enforce. maybe if its blatant a cop might say something but they have more important shit to do
12769850, one earbud is appropriate here.
Posted by Deadzombie, Wed Apr-01-15 05:21 PM
12769863, dude with the beats on was nodding hard..

Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Wed Apr-01-15 10:29 PM
12770521, none of which are ever a good reason for headphones
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Thu Apr-02-15 12:26 PM
talking on the phone requires only one earbud.

driving with headphones on is one of the most idiotic things you can do.

12770096, THE WORST!!! Charlotte is like Mad Max
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Apr-02-15 07:32 AM
In 3 years I've witnessed a good 15 accidents. Some of them defy logic.

How the hell does a car land upside down on another car?

12771132, DMV has NC drivers beat by a wide margin
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Thu Apr-02-15 08:15 PM
or anywhere else, I'd wager.
12771211, Lots of NorthEast Transplants
Posted by AtoZ 0toInfinity, Fri Apr-03-15 06:47 AM
Out here in Charlotte, Raleigh/Durham drivin like bats.

Couple that with the NC lifers who been used to drivin

on dark winding country roads and live life at a

slooower speed then add to the mix 15-25% wearing $10 walmart

buds and you have the perfect confluence of vehicular mayhem.
12770543, i honestly thought that was illegal in all states
Posted by esb225, Thu Apr-02-15 12:36 PM
you can't hear sirens if you have those on in most cases
12770554, EXACTLY
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Apr-02-15 12:38 PM
and this is why Charlotte drivers be fucking up all the time. Transplant city where everyone drives differently with earphones on.

12771101, it should be if it's not.
