12769762, How did Kool Moe Dee live downtown and near 129th street?

Help me out NYers
12769768, that was downtown for Black people back in the 80's

but that used to be my song when it debuted.

I feel like that Indian dude in that commercial where the one tear comes out of his eye.
12769817, in harlem, if you go north they call it 'uptown'
Posted by Bblock, Wed Apr-01-15 04:49 PM
uptown is like the heart of harlem, around the 135, 145th region
so, when you go south, they consider that goin' 'downtown'
12769822, This Special Ed Lyric always made me sooo uncomfortable.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Apr-01-15 04:53 PM
Threw on the trench, kissed the girl good-bye
She said, "Special Ed, don't go, you might die"
Started cryin and huggin on me, so I shot her
I said, "Sorry baby, but I gotta do what I gotta"

Like Damn dawg, why you shoot your girl for just being concerned for your well being? SMH.

+ the Rambo knife with the hunting appawwull.

By that point, she shoulda known to steer clear and let him do what he gotta.

You're not gonna stop & reason with a camouflaged man armed to the teeth, with an impediment in his speech, running out the door having just received a mysterious package leading to his boombox exploding.
12769882, strangely...

Posted by placee_22, Thu Apr-02-15 08:56 PM
also, has anyone from Flatbush ever verified that he did indeed fight Mr. Chen "Flatbush Style"?
12771604, there were no witnesses to the fight...

Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Fri Apr-03-15 12:24 PM
i don't watch enough james bond to know if he did that
but that's how my cousin explained it to me when i was a kid
12769834, it really made no sense
Posted by atruhead, Wed Apr-01-15 05:11 PM
pretty sure he's from St. Nicholas Projects where Teddy Riley came from and where my family still is

but that isn't downtown, not even compared to the Polo Grounds, Washington Heights, Inwood or the Bronx. just a comparably southern section of "Uptown"
12769868, Some Harlemites consider there to be a Downtown and Uptown Harlem
Posted by micMajestic, Wed Apr-01-15 05:49 PM
I grew up in Spanish Harlem, so that would be considered "Downtown" Harlem. An area like Sugar Hill would be considered "Uptown" Harlem. I'm not absolutely sure where the line is, but I'd say B-Block's answer is the most sensible (around 135th). Of course this is very confusing because many people used to call the entirety of Harlem "Uptown", in order to distinguish that area from the rest of Manhattan. But to be fair, those areas I named are very different.

12769870, i think he was just trying to make a rhyme.
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Apr-01-15 05:52 PM
None of the proffered explanations make sense.
12769876, Nah. I think Block and/or I covered it. Besides, Kool Moe Dee wasn't
Posted by micMajestic, Wed Apr-01-15 06:05 PM
>None of the proffered explanations make sense.

about throwing words together just to make a nonsensical rhyme, he used to shit on other people for doing that. Again, I've heard people from Harlem referring to downtown & uptown sections of Harlem. I'd figure the southernmost 20-30 blocks of Harlem are "downtown", the last 20 blocks are "uptown". Not really all that deep, considering the areas are vastly different.

Let my love slide in and never slip out
12769880, Nah.

12812505, Not at all. It was the "A" line of an A/B rhyme sequence.
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Fri May-22-15 09:39 AM
People make up shit to rhyme in the B line. He could have used any street name there,
and it still would have rhymed with "beat", so this logic fails.
12769898, so after watching Nate Dogg come to Warren G's aid...

I could not find rates for the East Side Motel...

This is where Nate Dogg Said there next stop was...

this was near 21st street and Lewis street.

Google maps was of no assistance.
12770644, 99% sure 21st & Lewis is in Long Beach
Posted by atruhead, Thu Apr-02-15 01:12 PM
but any motel on the east side could be the "east side motel"
12771119, it is, around the corner from LB Poly HS
Posted by Bombastic, Thu Apr-02-15 07:47 PM
>but any motel on the east side could be the "east side

Sidenote: the divey motels around LA County would make for a good documentary, got one by my office in Gardena and another on my way home in SanMo that look like the kind of places where souls go to simmer.
12771623, there's a long strip up Western of Asian places and crappy motels

Washington Heights and the South Bronx which actually both run from roughly the 140s - 160s (on different sides of the river) was uptown.

Also when he said Easy Lee in the last verse I thought it was Eazy E
