Would you be more comfortable giving a donation to somebody who has accomplished more?
I don't think that has to do with accomplishment - it's more that you were expecting them to live in a certain type of house and they didn't, and it clearly bothered you.
I understand the visceral response, but I don't understand the need to call them out on it verbally when you're a guest in their home.
