12764060, This new Rhianna song is ratchet, derivative, and good somehow.

The beat we've all heard before, but it's her voice that I like about it, full of personality. She really is committing to this Bajan Mae West thing and she's good at it.

12764070, done bout had my fill of R&B/Pop stars trying to prove how hard they are...

"Seasons may come and your luck just may run out, and all that you'll have is some memories..."
12764080, Yeah I could use more tenderness in r&b too
Posted by Errol Walton Barrow, Thu Mar-26-15 02:10 PM
but I do believe her when she says she got somebody wife in her car seat. It's still interesting and rebellious to me.
12764076, i feel like this was supposed to be a beyonce song
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Thu Mar-26-15 02:06 PM
i like it though.
12764085, I could see that for real, but Bey wouldn't have had that hopped up
Posted by Errol Walton Barrow, Thu Mar-26-15 02:13 PM
voice, that wild-eyed braggadoccio.

I wonder though who gets first look at some of these songs. Was "Dark Horse" offered to Katy Perry first, or did someone pass on it?
12764115, i think sometimes songs are made specifically for a certain pop star
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Thu Mar-26-15 02:27 PM
and other times its like you said somebody passes it up and it winds up onn someone else's album
12764448, Rihanna gets them made for her.
Posted by phemom, Thu Mar-26-15 05:36 PM
Def Jam invites a bunch of different producers & writers to LA to make records for her, she chooses what she likes and re-records them. I assume the Kanye records are a little different tho.
12764451, word.
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Thu Mar-26-15 05:48 PM
kanye is a producer so he's the guy getting people together to make songs with him i believe.
i doubt people submit songs to him. maybe verses or hooks even beats but you can tell he's the driving force behind the ideas that become the final product of the song.
12764139, Make no mistake !!!!

Ri Ri is at the top of the list to get these Ratchet songs

After her they got to the B list.... Miley,
K michelle Keisha Cole... etc

I just don't believe her, it sounds forced.
12764113, she is the bad girl of R&B/Pop with predictable results
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Thu Mar-26-15 02:26 PM
the fact remains she can't sing and really the key is the production which covers her limited range, yet her stuff is catchy and it works.

12764130, lol shuttup

That year and some change she took off could hurt her... in THIS space anyway

Beyonce & Nicki have moved into her lane something tough when it comes to these kinda club songs... it's crowded

I liked the direction Four Five Seconds was going so we'll see what else is in the chamber
12764239, none of that matters.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Mar-26-15 03:20 PM
enough ppl dig Rihanna enough that this song could hit w/o regard for who was doing what a few months ago.

all Rihanna has to do is come w/something hot enough and the ppl will flock to it. there's not really such a thing as 'lanes being crowded' or whatever. it doesn't work that way.
12764251, Hmm, I feel like it's not always about lanes being taken, but
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Mar-26-15 03:31 PM
more about certain artists losing their touch in a lane.

Best example is 2 Chainz...feels like he hasn't made a hit, or series of hits, in years. Or how Rae Sremmurd is basically an updated Travis Porter, while Travis can't make a hit to save their life in that lane.

I almost said Future...before Commas, he didn't have a banger for a while, but a LOT of ATL rappers used his style in that time.
12764258, sure.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Mar-26-15 03:33 PM
12764267, I was basically in agreeance with you...it's way too early to say
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Mar-26-15 03:36 PM
Rihanna lost her touch on that side. With other artists, I don't think the lane was necessarily stolen/hijacked as much as them just not making songs as good as they did before.
12764271, cool.

Predicted response: "ok."
12764291, RE: I was basically in agreeance with you...it's way too early to say
Posted by double 0, Thu Mar-26-15 03:44 PM
Rihanna will be fine.. in the end.. she is pretty damn versatile..

But Rihanna had a clear path with the last album.. where records like Pour It Up, Cockiness, Cake ruled the land..

Those are never her biggest records though
12764275, RE: Hmm, I feel like it's not always about lanes being taken, but
Posted by double 0, Thu Mar-26-15 03:38 PM
Like I said above..

Difference is... there is a finite amount of writers who make these "hits" in this space..

The hits go to whose on top.. and if you've taken some time off your hits went to someone else..
12764280, I figured it was more than just one team doing those type songs
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Mar-26-15 03:40 PM
I didn't know if it was Beyonce's own team giving her Rihanna-esque songs like "Bow down" or if it was actually Riahnna's team.
12764327, RE: I figured it was more than just one team doing those type songs
Posted by double 0, Thu Mar-26-15 03:54 PM
these type songs...

Peep credits.. It's usually The Dream.. Rock City... Ty Dolla sign is creeping his way in..

So nah not just a single team but these cats are always working on THESE songs.. for every 25 written there is 1 SMASH.. and if there are 3 artists competing for them.. it's going to the biggest one (at the time)
12764373, Damn, yeah R&B is a whole different game
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Mar-26-15 04:29 PM
It's wild how Ty is in there now. He actually doesn't even like making a lot of the music he makes, but he knows it works and he's great at it
12764384, RE: Damn, yeah R&B is a whole different game
Posted by double 0, Thu Mar-26-15 04:38 PM
LA has been important to this.. Like how ATL used to be during Lil John era..

Cuz there are so many cats out here working.. It is incredibly easy to organize writing camps..

This is how everything that isnt (non radio) EDM or certain types of Hip Hop works though..

12764542, saw Ty$ had a backing vocal credit on Lupe's latest.
Posted by Nodima, Thu Mar-26-15 09:40 PM
I was like, damn, never saw that one coming.

^^^^^^^

Beyonce did sound A LOT like Rihanna on her last self titled album. I just couldn't put my finger on it. Her sound was harder- and so was her image compared to her last somewhat subtle albums. Jay-Z also influenced her and hardened her sound.
Also, a lot of R&B artists are taking up the same lane turning to trap music. This is (sadly) the new direction and state of R&B. IMO.
12764456, chainz just played his full hand.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Mar-26-15 05:52 PM
his delivery is no longer clever, catchy or effortless.
12764503, RE: chainz just played his full hand.
Posted by double 0, Thu Mar-26-15 07:17 PM
I think Chainz just went for it...

like dude was mid thirties when he got the ball... He did 100 guest verses in a year..

that's more than peoples who careers..

not to mention is Talk Dirty w/ Jason Derulo was number 1 in multiple countries and #3 here last year (and 4X platinum)... The only rapper on a bigger record was Juicy J..
12764264, RE: none of that matters.
Posted by double 0, Thu Mar-26-15 03:36 PM
A hit is a hit...

I agree...

But the lane exists because everyone uses the same producers and writers...

so yes Rock City could write Rihanna a hit.. but what if they already gave it to Bey.. Or Nicki..

It's not like Rihanna is writing songs on guitar on the island and reemerging.. she relies on the same cast of characters

Man...cut this silly shit out dog...lol

U comparing people breaking down a Turnt up, just add water, party record by Rihanna to people breaking down the LEGAL ramifications of a ruling that was being broken down by everyone from Time Magazine to Billboard...? Like for real?

Those two subjects have nothing to do with one another...

I'd prefer it if every radio station in the country accidentally loaded AMG's original into their programming feeds.

12764584, Sounds horrible to me, but has the right catch phrases to be a hit.
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Thu Mar-26-15 11:53 PM
Plus it's by Rihanna, so it'll have the right marketing push and repeated plays to "grow"
on people and have others liking it just to feel part of the "cool" crowd.

Stuff like this is just an exercise in yelling the right catch phrases the right way, imo.
I have no problem with catch phrases being used to push or sell a record. It's been
done for probably a 100 yrs at this point, but...
There's just no redeeming value in the song for me to play it again. Even the melody is wack.
Dem catch phrases tho + dem repeated plays + dem sheep = success
Not even hating on the formula. If it works for you and ppl fall for it, if there is a "problem",
it's with the people who fall for it. More power to you.

12764587, This isn't CDQ, is it?

Sounded a bit squeezed and thin on my monitors.
I like to hear the dynamics in these type of songs.
Cause lets face it, the producers/engineers are doing most of the heavy lifting.

It could be a hit but she's had better in this same vein.

I'm starting to understand how to put these type of tracks together now. Makes me wanna try my hands on it now. The first generation of trap /drill was too amateur but ths newer layered stuff is sonically interesting to me especially as a pop track.
12764948, yeah sounds like a radio rip
