12762162, Moving to Seattle in 2 days. Where are the black folks?
Posted by jon_o, Wed Mar-25-15 12:11 PM
So, i took a job as a creative director at an ad agency in Seattle. Moving the fam out there. I'm hearing there's a major lack of black people out there, so I'm trying to get some advice on how I might find a congregation OUTSIDE of the church.

Any OKPs in seattle?? Whats good out there? Where's the best music? Any good BBQ? I know nothing

I'd holla at FWMJ as he's pretty new to Seattle too, but I think he's in a similar lane as you career-wise. Unfortunately, Seattle is going thru a big period of gentrification and a lot of the black residents have been pushed to South Seattle/Renton/Auburn/Kent. There are still black people in the Central District (where FWMJ lives, I believe) but it's getting whiter everyday.

My clubbing days are more or less over, but there's plenty of good live music venues and most tours hit the city (stadium and club tours). They have a Motown on Mondays night that some friends of mine DJ and that's a great, mature club night. If you're younger, there are definitely young cat turn up nights, I'm just too old to know of them now. I'm looking for good BBQ too. I know there are spots in South Seattle but I'm up north so that's not too convenient. Might wanna holla at FWMJ about that too cuz he and his lady seem to be real foodies and he posts a lot of food porn on IG.

If you have any more specific questions, holla.

Thanks fam. Just picked up on the fact that FWMJ is a person here on the boards. Will reach out.

if your ad agency ever wants to hire an inexperienced ad person with marketing experience and good ideas, at a good salary? get at me. LOL.

do you know where you're living already?

For sure man. I haven't the slightest clue where we're going to live. I'm heading out there a few weeks ahead of my wife and kid, so I'll be scouting. We're thinking lower queen anne
12762382, word. I used to live on Lower QA.
Posted by PROMO, Wed Mar-25-15 01:10 PM
i will warn you that all of Queen Anne Hill is very white.

however, lower QA is a great place to actually live if you can deal with that. it's a very short busride or 15-20 min walk to downtown which is nice. you definitely feel like you're * IN * the city but it's a bit more quiet than being right downtown. lower QA also has some good bars and restaurants (i highly recommend Toulouse), there's 3 grocery stores (Safeway, QFC, and Metropolitan Market which is like a Whole Foods combined with a normal grocery store) and a drugstore. there's also grocery and drugstores if you go up on top of the hill, along with some other good restaurants (5 Spot). Shawn Kemp's bar/restaurant, Oscar's, is right there on lower QA too.

i actually miss living in that area. probably the best neighborhood i've lived in during my 30+ years in Seattle.

yeah, it's going to take some exploring. luckily, we have a ton for friends there. I'm hoping to get involved in some kind of organization where I can volunteer and be a lot more involved in the city than I am here in Vegas.
12762232, i'm really looking at an offer to move to seattle myself
Posted by vik, Wed Mar-25-15 12:28 PM

damn smh
12762387, it's not like there are NO black people in Seattle (that's Portland, BTW)...
Posted by PROMO, Wed Mar-25-15 01:12 PM
it's just that there's no central hub like there used to be. so you could be anywhere and run into some black folks, but you won't likely run into a lot of them.
12762400, man, only reason why i didnt go to portland after the bay is the LACK
Posted by double negative, Wed Mar-25-15 01:19 PM
i know its a great place to be

but uh

fuck and that.
12762412, it's funny cuz * I * don't see PDX that way...
Posted by PROMO, Wed Mar-25-15 01:23 PM
because whenever i go there its usually to visit my wife's (who is black) family, and they've got their group of black friends so all i see when i'm there is black people. i also get a very Oakland (where my wife is from) vibe from the city itself (vs. the people who live in PDX who are white whereas Oakland isnt). it's old and run down and grimey.

however, an article just came out in the Washington Post the other day about how Portland is the whitest "big" city in America and getting whiter.
12762461, RE: it's funny cuz * I * don't see PDX that way...
Posted by jon_o, Wed Mar-25-15 01:37 PM
I've only been to portland once, and I didn't especially feel "alone" there. Might have been because I was with my wife, but I really liked it's vibe, though I think it would be a bit too slow for me. I'm hoping seattle is the perfect in-between regarding pace and low-keyness
12762333, NOT in Seattle?

"Seasons may come and your luck just may run out, and all that you'll have is some memories..."
12762471, they really dont have churches like that from what i heard
Posted by labcoat, Wed Mar-25-15 01:38 PM
my cousin is there
he is black

my best friend is there
she is rican and her husband is black
she hates it
because there arent many blacks there
AND she said that people
arent religious
so finding a church is few and far in between

it really is a hipster town
