12762116, How do you generalize people from Queens?
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Mar-25-15 11:59 AM
Uptown is easy with the Diddy, Dame Dash and Nicky Barnes type flashy cats.

Brooklyn is easy too with the grimey Biggie, Boot Camp Clik type dudes.

But how do you generalize Queens cats who seem to have their own style and recognizable but I am having a hard time describing it.

What say you?

How about the Bronx?

fulton street and grand concourse by 149th (am i right bronxies?) and 125th/village are the other borough equivalents but queens just to just seem more fancy w/ queens lol. it probably isn't but it just seems that way. especially since they seem more likely to have that disposable income b/c houses.

i understand that in spite of what movies
and music videos tell me,

everybody from compton does not know gang bangers, everybody from the
middle east is not in a war torn neighborhood,
and everybody from the continent of africa
does not live in a jungle.

but if i did walk into
human relationships with an
explicit list of ridiculous assumptions
about ppl, i would generalize
that ppl from queens can get
me a good deal on whatever i want to buy
and will tell me i overpaid on
whatever i just bought.

i would also assume that if they are
somewhere other than new york,
they will complain about how something
they like in new york does not exist where
they currently are.

this person would be tolerable if they
are in new york, but an obnoxious bore
when they talk about how awesome
new york is to folks in other
parts of the country.

and you spent it a good portion in an area that I'm not really familiar with at all (Far Rock) so I can't call that one
I don't know how to explain this but I'm gonna try
you see different levels of middle class in Queens
to me the bougieness comes into play in the middle class areas
I can see where you're coming from in certain hoods:
St. Albans
Cambria
Hollis
Forest Hills
oh yes definitely
I was the rare person who cared more about moving out of my mom's crib over getting a car.

but Southside, Ridgewood, QB?
no time for that
and Flushing is too fucking dirty to be on some bougie shit

those hoods were the ones I was referring to
yeah I definitely see it out there
I have a homegirl who stays out in Cambria
i love her to death but her friends?
o_O
in thinking about this post some more last night
I really think it's a new money/old money thing because growing up in Forest Hills, you didn't see the kind of flashing/bragging that you saw in say Laurelton. Girls would come to school with relatively recent model Lexuses, Beemers on some "oh that old thing? my parents just got a new car so I got the old one" and shrug it off.
Let it be a girl from Jamaica Estates or Cambria tho :(

The same mobility that led Queens to be the only county in the mid 2000s in the US where Black people had a higher median income than White people also helped mold that kind of bougie mentality I think.

Even me personally, I have both bougie and ratchet tendencies but I lean more towards ratchet because that's how I grew up and that's what I'm most comfortable with even with my mom moving us to Forest Hills and working her way up the corporate ladder throughout my childhood. Even living in a neighborhood with old money, I grew up so broke that I couldn't stunt on anybody even if I wanted to. This post has been enlightening for sure because this is the first that I've ever heard Queens girls EVER be categorized as bougie. No one I was close to coming up would ever be classified as bougie but I don't gravitate to people with that mentality to begin with.
12762759, I think you're on to something.

the Flushing my parents grew up in was much more balanced in terms of diversity but it was also a bad neighborhood. The block my mom grew up (Sanford Ave between College Point Boulevard and Frame Place) was infamous in her time, you couldn't walk down that block unless you were from there.
the Asians didn't start visibly taking over until the mid 90s, by the time the mid 2000s hit they took over everything.
I've learned to live with them peacefully, Asians generally only start trouble with their own. Plus I really can't complain about the variety of produce just a hop, skip and jump away from my door plus the prices, they got it 4 cheap!
