If the story of Newark’s revitalization is all about buildings, Hall, a 60-year-old principal at a charter school here, is living inside one of its newest characters. Her eclectic, fifth-floor apartment is one of the residential units in Teachers Village, a $150 million, mixed-use project financed through a consortium of private and public investments and blessed with mammoth government tax credits. The development lives along five blocks of Halsey Street, just off of the city’s main thoroughfare and was designed to convert into residents some of the 6,000 teachers and administrators who commute to this city of 280,000 each workday.

12757237, Why not GWB Jersey? Fort Lee and the like.
Posted by John Forte, Fri Mar-20-15 09:50 AM
12757252, No jobs, art galleries or universities (barring Yeshiva) that far Uptown
Posted by Mongo, Fri Mar-20-15 09:57 AM
Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark all link to midtown on down.

And GWB lacks PATH.

It's difficult being a hipster douchebag without good public transportation and bicycle options.
12757434, Fort Lee is comprised mostly of Asians

Not sure why you thought of this location.
12757485, Hence why the white people call it ah FORT REEEEEE
Posted by T Reynolds, Fri Mar-20-15 12:18 PM
fuckin racists
12757239, Don't insult Newark like that.
Posted by BabySoulRebel, Fri Mar-20-15 09:51 AM
12757251, Union City is the next Queens
Posted by T Reynolds, Fri Mar-20-15 09:57 AM
12757256, Weehawken is the next Texas.
Posted by Mongo, Fri Mar-20-15 09:58 AM
12757473, i hate you both for making me LOL and getting me in trouble :(
Posted by BabySoulRebel, Fri Mar-20-15 12:10 PM
12757246, Halsey Street is the only street that looks like Brooklyn
Posted by Starks dunked on Bulls, Fri Mar-20-15 09:56 AM
From what I can tell anyway.
12757440, lots of artists fled NY for Newark
Posted by teefiveten, Fri Mar-20-15 11:47 AM
i spun an artists weekend last fall out there
they have some GREAT spaces. downtown in office buildings (subletted out. some chick. she's doing what i wanted to do in bed stuy :()

but riding around w/ some of the artists afterwards they feel the end is near for affordability

i spun in an old post office that was vacant but every corner around that building there was major construction going on. mostly condos/luxury rental.

they were talking about how the largely portuguese part, which was pretty insular, is now getting chains and other things. folks sitting on property for decades now priming themselves to cash in

it won't be brooklyn (shit, if jersey city aint bk, then newark DEF won't be), but it will go the way of BK

12757469, and JC is kinda close
Posted by teefiveten, Fri Mar-20-15 12:03 PM
there's JC outposts of at least 2 brooklyn spots
downtown is super close from manhattan and there's mad places to eat and drink and it isn't douchey like hoboken
12757487, when I was in JC heavy, I kinda liked it
Posted by BabySoulRebel, Fri Mar-20-15 12:19 PM
It was a big step toward mitigating my Jersey hatred.
I miss Ibby's on Grove a lot
12757496, yeah i'm noticing more invites to art shows in newark on fb recently
Posted by T Reynolds, Fri Mar-20-15 12:26 PM
12757532, me too. Has me intrigued.
Posted by Niq96st, Fri Mar-20-15 12:47 PM

12757546, it's very easy to get out there. VERY.
Posted by teefiveten, Fri Mar-20-15 12:52 PM
however, it is newark

dude tried to panhandle me and when i declined, offered to sell me heroin he "found"

12757552, Super close!
Posted by Niq96st, Fri Mar-20-15 12:56 PM
But Newark is still just so...raw.

I feel similarly about Harlem sometimes. Despite all the new faces and money streaming in, there are just too many crackheads! Still.

12757554, just like my building! lol
Posted by teefiveten, Fri Mar-20-15 12:58 PM
hipsters and open air crack deals
my little area is the last bastion in clinton hill lol
12757567, This conversation is so Brooklyn. SMH.

not a chance. it's still NJ at the end of the day
12757484, extra points for incorporating 'at the end of the day'
Posted by T Reynolds, Fri Mar-20-15 12:17 PM
12757538, Damn it, I've been thinking about this.
Posted by Niq96st, Fri Mar-20-15 12:50 PM
But I'm too stupidly proud to move to Newark.
Newark really is just an 18 minute train ride from Penn Station, though.

But it's just so...Newark still is too live. Even for someone like me.

12757583, I Never Understand the NJ Hate
Posted by RexLongfellow, Fri Mar-20-15 01:17 PM
Especially coming from NY'ers...when NJ pretty much supports NY, while NY tends to try to shit on NJ.

As for Newark, there's parts that are Fort Greeney, and parts that are Brownsvillian. It'll need work to be like Brooklyn, but it's coming.

I'd say JC is closer to BK than Newark (although I like Newark a lot more than JC)
12757588, Chicago has Indiana, LA has the Valley, we have Jersey.
Posted by Mongo, Fri Mar-20-15 01:21 PM
12758317, I Was Born in NY, But Lived in NJ for over 20 Years
Posted by RexLongfellow, Sat Mar-21-15 07:38 PM
I see it from both ends...just don't get why NY hates on NJ...especially since NJ is the first place they move to when they want a house
12758318, Terrible drivers, terrible property taxes, arrogant
Posted by Musa, Sat Mar-21-15 07:40 PM
Locals (white folks mainly).

Despite having Princeton might be the dumbest of the northeast states.

You kinda drive through Jersey to get to places other than jersey.
12758313, Is Newark ground zero for the Zombie Apocalypse? <----better question
Posted by Castro, Sat Mar-21-15 07:29 PM
12758407, I never understood how there could be a wasteland so close to the
