12749996, no really. why is anime so fucking popular?
Posted by Deadzombie, Thu Mar-12-15 03:30 PM
even to black niggas. shit is surreal to me.

it's like they think that shit speaks to them.

to me, it looks like action cartoons, set in asia. with fireballs.

is it simply because there's so much of it? there does seem to be a never ending content stream.

what's the appeal?
12750004, Have you seen Afro Samurai
Posted by MEAT, Thu Mar-12-15 03:33 PM
Or Cowboy Bebop?
At least start there.
12750011, me? no i haven't.
Posted by Deadzombie, Thu Mar-12-15 03:38 PM
it seems campy.

like blaxploitation?

i like king of the hill. and the south park movie.

those were nice cartoons.

i feel like afrosamuri might take itself too seriously.

as do all anime.

...

is it the art?

the story?

the long, ever-available episodic content?

Anime can cross boundaries and do things you can't accomplish with Live Action.

Spirited Away is an incredible adventure and has superb story telling.

Posted by hardware, Thu Mar-12-15 05:34 PM
look up LeSean Thomas. he's been on his media tour for Cannonbusters

he moved to Korea for a while because thats where most American animation is done to try and understand it all. He worked on Boondocks and Black Dynamite with JM Animation and Korra with Studio Mir

Here's the doc he did with Creative Control
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvGqAanK0FI

and here's a recent podcast he did with Meltdown where he goes over all his stuff and how animation works overseas
http://www.meltcomics.com/blog/2015/03/01/meltcast-3-0-7-getting-animated-with-lesean-thomas/
12750226, ion't know about that
Posted by hardware, Thu Mar-12-15 05:26 PM
Americans prefer use a more acting, motion style. most frames are different
since most of this animation happens overseas, there's a lot of hands-off direction which can lead to some weird mistakes. less so now because its been going on so long.

in anime, its more keyframe/pose based they can afford to be more detailed, but because of tight budgets and schedules, not a lot of actual animating gets to happen. Its more about economy. Some shows have A LOT of still images and recycled animation.

its just two sides of the same coin. I don't prefer Ninja Scroll over Steven Universe. neither is better, just different.
12750513, Man, please. Just because the subject matter of anime is up to your tastes...
Posted by The Wordsmith, Fri Mar-13-15 12:20 AM
...doesn't mean they draw and animate much better than here. Stiff poses, mouths that don't match the words, and yes that includes the original Japanese vocals, same few drawing styles on damn near all them joints. Get our top 24 fps animated joints and compare the gracefulness and stylings to anime. No contest.

12751523, You're off your rocker if you think anime has the level of fluidity...
Posted by The Wordsmith, Fri Mar-13-15 06:17 PM
....in its animation than our best. The drawing styles of too many of their shows and movies are too similar to each other. I'd put their stories over ours since we don't do enough adult oriented animation but that's it. When it comes to character design, we have way more variations and our top level animation is way more fluid.

Which was my point. It's not all flying people and fireballs.
There's anime for food, abstraction, sci fi, robots, fantasy, murder mystery, sports, drama ... etc.
It's such an expansive universe of art, that someone saying they don't like anime because they don't like flying and fireballs is akin to someone not liking a museum because they don't like French Impressionism.

12750051, I'd imagine "action cartoons. set in asia. with fireballs."
Posted by Nodima, Thu Mar-12-15 03:52 PM
I mean it's like asking why comic books, or comic book movies are popular.

I've never been a huge anime head but I made sure to get home in time for Toonami when I was a kid.

And as a few posters have mentioned in this thread, compared to American cartoons the art is both A) MUCH more impressive and B) the subject matter is MUCH more mature.

I'm willing to bet Dragon Ball Z and the Street Fighter II movie got a lot of dudes into anime in the 90s. That SF movie is bananas.

particularly in long story form.

So yeah, there's some cliche's in the genre that can be annoying (all the male protagonists are 17, women are eyecandy, the comedy that even a five year old would find childish), but there's some gems. And its one of the few places where you can go really nuts with the ideas because you aren't beholden to ratings, just nerdy fans.

I don't watch as much nowadays since there are so many good shows in the US I barely can catch. But shit like Death Note, Cowboy Bepop id take the Pepsi challenge against any HBO show

Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Thu Mar-12-15 03:55 PM
Shit is amazing and so complex. I mean, look at this description from Wikipedia:

"The show is a hybrid of multiple genres, including comedy, the detective caper, action fiction and thrillers, and film noir. The musical style was emphasized in many of the episode titles. Multiple philosophical themes are explored using the characters, including existentialism, existential ennui, loneliness, and the effect of the past on the protagonists. It draws extensively from multiple western genres, including the western and pulp fiction. The series also makes specific references to or pastiches multiple films, including the works of John Woo and Bruce Lee, Midnight Run and Alien.

The series also includes extensive references and elements from science fiction, bearing strong similarities to the cyberpunk fiction of William Gibson. Several planets and space stations in the series are made in Earth's image. The streets of celestial objects such as Ganymede resemble a modern port city, while Mars features shopping malls, theme parks, casinos and cities. Cowboy Bebop's universe is filled with video players and hyperspace gates, eco-politics and fairgrounds, spaceships and Native American shamans. This presentation, and the balance of ethnic groups, has been described as "one third Chinese, two thirds Western"
12750108, ^^^^Cowboy Bebop is one the 20 best TV shows period.

Naruto - was long but good
Afro Samurai
Bleach
Blood + - I really liked this one
Desert Punk - seriously one of my favorites. Its ecchi, but funny as hell!!!!

I didn't hang with anyone in school who was into anime that much and if they were they weren't passing tapes around.

With the internet you can pretty much stumble across anime and get into it on your own plus since cartoons have been killed for kids(Saturday mornings and things are leaning towards more adult centered and anime like animation (Toonami) I think it is made more palatable for people.

If you can't watch 'Shingeki no Kyojin' (Attack On Titan) and get hype, you have no pulse.

If you can't see the appeal of 'Cowboy Bebop' or 'Samurai Champloo'... your loss, I guess.

Good anime has great stories, characters and animation allowing the story to
push beyond the boundaries of what live action could do. What's not to love?

I just saw the movie Lucy and all I could think was that it'd have been better as an anime.

Ichiro might just be some type of good luck charm when it comes to Japanese names.

when you hit 13-17 you're too old to watch the shit you been watching but live-action is still more or less boring. The regular american action shows are pretty tame and still trying to sell toys, and usually really condescending or just really terrible because they're still trying to appeal to 8 year olds too.

meanwhile anime has all the gore, deep plots that you're into cause you're into puberty and full of emotions and hormones, and usually more interesting art thats different than what you're used to.

and you can really just grow with it cause they make stuff geared toward whatever age you are. They even make stuff for the 40+ set. Every genre. Every theme. Something for everybody.

They made Cowboy Bebop for niggas that don't like anime
12750247, This right here:

Shigurui

Watch that, there is an English dub now, but I prefer the Japanese one. Somehow the Japanese voices and language add to the effect.

Some of craziest gore/story telling you will ever see. This one literally sent chills down my spine. it's ruthless, bizarre, gory, and horrifyingly good.

It's a masterpiece made with blood.

which there is plenty of.

Like Bin said, it's better high. Most of the shows are 20 minutes a piece so I can easily watch them alongside any live action American dramas/comedies. If JPN got they own Breaking Bad or The Wire with subtitles, I might fuck with it too.

Shit is entertaining, you don't have to take the next step and fetishize Asian culture and try to learn Japanese and go to conventions and alladat.

I treat anime just like American tv. Most of it is trash, keep your ears to the grapevine and folks will talk about the real dope stuff, and then see what appeals to you from there.

BigReg is right tho, American tv is so on point right now that's hard to keep up. I only watch one or two series at a time, if that.

Posted by Lardlad95, Fri Mar-13-15 07:03 AM
I keep telling them that I'm cool on that shit.

I got out of the Dragon Ball Z type animes when I was in high school. I don't need to see a bunch of drawn out fights and over-developed (read: unnecessarily complex) plots.

If I'm going to watch something like that in Anime I'd prefer for it to be "High" Fantasy, and not just a mash up of whatever cool shit the creator likes. If you don't have a good story I'll get bored with whatever cool visuals you're throwing out there.

I appreciate anime that has a lot of noir elements in it or ones where character development is paramount. I can deal with a slow burn, what I can't deal with is nonsensical bullshit thrown in there for 13 year old.s

Conversely, I know to keep scrolling past the shows with cutesy girls in the thumbnail.

Posted by hardware, Fri Mar-13-15 01:12 AM
i agree it doesn't happen enough tho. i tend to be attracted to anime that looks different so i've been like a catalog for that.

but you'd enjoy Takeshi Koike's stuff probably. He did the runner short for Animatrix, he did the pilot for Afro Samurai, art directed for the newest, gritty Lupin III series, among other things

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MPe7E1YrY4

There's also Masaaki Yuasa who's style is more gestural and very distinctive.
He's worked with Studio 4°C on stuff lik Mind Game and Genius Party.
You should check out My Neighbours the Yamadas, Ping Pong, or The Tatami Galaxy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcSuAhbtIFg

Makoto Shinkai is another one. his bread and butter is sheer detail. I don't think his characters are much to write home about designwise, but the level of detail in his environments, and the lighting and water effects are impressive.

12753394, yeah, they started out as general entertainment for everyone
Posted by b.Touch, Mon Mar-16-15 09:05 PM
back when they were made to run in theaters.

there were cartoons that were friendliER for kids (Casper and other Paramount/Famous Studios cartoons, for example) and could be stitched together for Saturday matinees, but sitting through a handful of Looney Tunes should reveal jokes that, while not dirty, are definitely grown people humor. Plenty of cartoons, however, are a little (or a lot) salacious (see also, Betty Boop pre 1934)

What turned the tide in the US was television, where old cartoons were chopped up and used in live kiddie-show packages, and new cartoons were produced under the strict eye of parent groups
12750707, The art & animation looks dope. Other than that, I don't get it either
Posted by 8-bit, Fri Mar-13-15 09:16 AM
I never got into that stuff. Or comics, for that matter. I think it just appeals to who it appeals to.

You gotta think about time and place when you reccomend it. I aint saying its wack but when you look at the landscape, it was never really unique. The plot was basically any ronin movie. Kenshin was deeper.

It just happened to hit at the right time for adolecent/teenage boys in america who'd never seen anything like that.

12751791, aldonah zero anyone? attack on titan?
Posted by seasoned vet, Sat Mar-14-15 11:01 AM
i like the more serious anime, the 3 episodes ive seen of aldonah zero were good, im looking for an english dub

one thing anime gets wrong are the over the top emotions like on attack on titan. all that yelling and screaming make it unwatchable for me
12751792, yeah, i'm pretty much into all seinen stuff now
Posted by hardware, Sat Mar-14-15 11:21 AM
Bebop, Lupin, GitS, Golgo 13, Mushishi, Moribito
and usually stuff that borders more american
12751800, can you make any reccomendations?
Posted by seasoned vet, Sat Mar-14-15 11:54 AM
im into the more serious anime

gore means nothing to me
im not against gore but i dont have to have it
and gore just to have gore is a turnoff

Akira was visually fantastic
good background story, but something about the execution i didnt like

i hate
absolutely HATE the random silly characters they seem to throw into serious anime
Full Alchemist Brotherhood
the Tachikomas on GitS

that shit is hella annoying on to me and unnecessary

i LOVE Miyazaki movies
Spirited Away is my favorite
so im not against humor it just has its place

ive only seen the first 3 episodes of Cowboy Bebop
it looks promising
12751813, see: 207
Posted by hardware, Sat Mar-14-15 01:14 PM
i agree with you mostly

i disagree with the tachikomas. i find them the most interesting since they're the only real 'robots' in the show; ones without 'ghosts'. They constantly try to understand the line between living thing and object, which is something the human characters seem to deal with eternally.

it think its an interesting way to treat the constant pontificating found in the movies by using it for specific characters who, by all intents, shouldn't even be able to. They're voices get kind of annoying but i kind of accept that representing their childlike curiosity considering the designs are so fun looking. It did feel like some heart was missing when they were gone in season 2
12751830, Data didnt need the voice of Chun Li to be authentic
Posted by seasoned vet, Sat Mar-14-15 02:24 PM
i agree with you though....kinda

i agree that it goes with their 'young' inquisitive programming

however i still feel like anime overcompensates too much with too many things
and thats a distraction for me

you could still pull a voice off like that with the robots without it sounding like a 5 year old little girl

so everytime a post comes up its 200 posts of DBZ, Ninja Scroll, Bebop, Miyazaki, and whatever happened to be popular in the past 6 months.

no shade tho. nghs aint got that kind of time. lol

i just know when you get old and jaded, you don't really like the shit you did when you were 16. I'd have recommended Ranma 1/2 back in '01, i loved it, but if it came out now, i'd 100% not be watching it. These posts tend to feel like recommending cough drops for athlete's foot.

i mean, are we really out here in 2015 telling people to watch Inuyasha?

All of these shows have elements of Cowboy Bebop that I have found similiar. Its not the same show but if you like Cowboy Bebop I think you will enjoy those shows. They all mix martial arts, gun play, bounty hunters, westerns, jazz (kinda), pirates, capers, and strong scripts. Some are more funny than the others (Black Lagoon, Outlaw Star, Trigun)

Its the type that has good elements that dont really come together. Its entirely too melodramatic and/or cliche than it should be. I was pretty high on it when it came out, but upon second viewing, it didnt really feel as dope.
