12745520, Chicago: come talk to me
Posted by John Forte, Mon Mar-09-15 11:15 AM
I was back in the Chi over the weekend and I'm seriously contemplating a move back. One of the friends we reconnected with believes that the city is in decline (from where it was when we left in 08) and that a new round of white flight is in its early stages.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Public school advice (North Side)? We're probably going to end up doing the lab school if we come back, but we have to stay open to public options.

Why no one tell me they closed 2 of the 3 La Pasadita locations? When this happen?

Though idk if I can confirm the white flight phenomenon. If anything, I've lately seen white people in places I'd never have expected to see them in before (like getting off the Red line at 69th street) or walking around Bronzeville.

I don't really understand how the public school system works anymore. I do know there's this super complicated weighting system for the selective-enrollment schools that's tied to the area's racial and socio-economic breakdown combined with how well the kid does on certain standardized metrics. From talking to some parents, it just seems like a total PITA. Seems like the tracking starts a lot younger now than it did when I was in the school system, and unless you're lucky enough to live in an area with top-tier local elementary schools, you might be kinda screwed.

As for the closing of The Dita? I know there was a fire at one of the locations, but I heard they're in the process of shutting the whole thing down. I'm not entirely sure why. I just know it sucks.

white flight specifically? no. but gentrification is going on all over the place and it seems many ppl have left town in the wake of that awful winter of 2014.

hipsters and foodies have moved on to fetishize other 'authentic' taquerias. especially now that they're not skurred of Pilsen anymore. (note: my fave is Rubi's @ Maxwell Market. 2nd fave is Big Star)

If anything, it seems like the yuppies and hipsters are pushing deeper into Uptown and Rogers Park, which is/was the Northside's "hood zone". They aren't leaving.

I haven't kept up with the goings on at Chicago Public Schools in years, but Walt Disney was always considered a good school for kids. But this was years ago, don't know what it's like now.

The Latin School of Chicago is a good school, too. Private school.

The place that replaced La Pasadita, Authentaco, beats the breaks offa La Pas; handmade tortillas made inhouse, just an all-around better taqueria.

And quiet as kept, Birria Huentitan was always better than La Pasadita, for burritos anyway.

You should also consider Oak Park, Il. Kinda like Chicago's version of Columbia, Md or Berkeley, Ca (kinda sorta). Multiethnic, liberal, and progressive.
12746177, I thought Uptown and Rogers Park got hot again recently

These are the people from the projects who were displaced when Daley tore the PJs down.

Now all the hoodlums from Cabrini-Green, Robert Taylor, Stateway Gardens, Rockwell Gardens, and Henry Horner are your new neighbors! :)
12746163, I KNOW! haha
