12745706, I'm definitely not saying that we shouldn't expose the racist bullshit Posted by Vex_id, Mon Mar-09-15 12:39 PM
we should (and we do) - but we should also have other stories that document a different emerging culture, because that culture does exist, and it shouldn't always take a back seat just because the racial stories tend to get our collective blood boiling. I also think that it must be acknowledged that the coverage of racism is excellent business -- we love a good racial conflict in America, but I'm not so sure that how we're presently covering racism is doing enough to actually combat racism.
But I definitely agree that there has been a need to expose racism in a very direct way by giving all these stories mainstream publicity, because that shows that we aren't afraid to address and confront racism and acknowledge that it still is alive and well in many parts of the country. I think we've done that - but I think we're nearing a time where we're in need of new narratives to push the discussion forward.
>i think this story is worth telling b/c it can be used as an >example of the sort of action we're pushing for in the wake of >racist bullshit. but not b/c i think the university or the >frat's act is reflective of where we are as a society.
agreed.
