I mean, they don't go very deep or serious with it. But one stereotype explains why they act the way they do. And another someone expresses regret for playing into a stereotype.

And those were the two that bothered me the most, so I'm glad they at least acknowledged it.

i always saw that as a "big dumb bodyguard guy" subversion. tracy witnessing dotcom "becoming trigorin on the wesleyan arts main stage" is funny because he's a big bodyguard, not because he's black. do you recall any specific instances of the humor being based on them being black?
12774937, And you don't think their race played a role in that?
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Apr-08-15 07:41 AM
I will give you that he favorable reading is that the joke was a subversion of an image, but the guys being black is part of that image. I don't see how you seperate their race out of that image. It's like those old right gaurd commercials with charles barkely and david robinson with the same premise.

doesn't this commercial play out in the exact same way with a white althete?

i'm not trying to be obstinate here. i haven't had the same experiences with racism that you have so i'm not going to tell you how you should interpret something. it's possible that my inability to empathize is causing me to miss some of the more subtle aspects of racial image subversion

Right people think this is the joke and not the difference between their appearance and what they are actually saying and doing.

well as a big black man who sports doo rags, what people expect to come out of my mouth isn't really that much of a concern. That is reflective of THEIR prejudice, not mine.

However, for Grizz and Dot.Com to be talking about screenplays and acting gigs for Shakespearean roles only for Tracy to shit on them, YES that was a consistently running joke on the show.

By your measure, as soon as they opened their mouths and were intelligent then the joke should have been over. The running gag wasn't that they were Black and Urban, yet smart nearly as it was that they were smart, talented, yet working security for the guy starring in The Chunks franchise.

but he is neutered and kind of totally a coon

i still enjoy the show but I think about it
12752367, I wasn't really outraged by it either
Posted by Grand_Royal, Mon Mar-16-15 01:25 AM
I think I would be more offended if I was from Indiana than anything.

They poke fun at a lot of different stereotypes and it doesn't seem to single anyone out. Maybe having two Latina maids is unnecessary but they aren't particularly negative portrayals; Donna Maria has been consistently funny.

It's tameness seems like network television would be a better fit.

I had my doubt that Ellie Kemper could carry a series but she does so with aplomb.

It's got 30 rock like jokes per minute.

It's doing interesting things with Class jokes.

Titus has grown on me. I just want him to win at this point.

The last thing they need to fix is stop having the asian dude using that thick heavy accent.

12773722, wait, so now we can't make spoof anything in life
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Apr-07-15 10:07 AM
because someone, somewhere has gone through the experience?

12773743, I didn't say that. Spoof away but if there are negative consequences then
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Apr-07-15 10:18 AM
taking responsibility and suffer the moral consequences (i.e, feel bad about it).

What a comedian decides to make fun of is a personal decision and has moral consequences and they should weigh that out before deciding to make fun of something.

I don't believe there is a blanket "it's just comedy so I am absolved of feeling bad about my work" exception.

It was true when we made fun of people at school. It is still true for a comedian as an adult.

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Apr-07-15 06:59 PM
Let's not act like whenever anyone kills themselves in response to being made fun or bullied it's a normal reaction, but when it happens it is a normal response for people to feel bad for their role in it.

Do you think the folks responsible should feel bad for all those stories we read about teens killing themselves for being bullied or made fun of?

Whether it's normal reaction doesn't change how a person should feel for their role in it.

we shouldn't be silly children that think we're "special". Dude was in an industry that dealt purely on people's insecurities and narcissism, I'm sure there were plenty of times where he capitalized on people's lack of self esteem to make a bunch of money. And you can't handle someone spoofing you??? Get over yourself. This is an example of the comedic concept of punching up. It's unfortunate that he reacted that way but that's on him, not them.

Get some perspective
They were already dealing with what was clearly a fragile ego
That has little to do with being an adult at that point

12774911, You are basically saying "A person should be normal"
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Apr-08-15 07:07 AM
Which I guess makes sense but sometimes people aren't normal. The kids who kill themselves from social media taunting? They aren't normal. Yet it happens.

In law we have the Eggshell skull theory. Google it. The basic premise is one liable for all consequences resulting from his or her tortious (usually negligent) activities leading to an injury to another person, even if the victim suffers an unusually high level of damage (e.g. due to a pre-existing vulnerability or medical condition).

Now I don't want to turn this into a legal discussion. I just want to show there is precedent for accepting the idea that sometimes people aren't normal and we can't expect them to react normally to stuff.

Now do I think art shouldn't make jokes that make fun of people? I am not saying that at all.

I am just saying their is a moral component of making art and that moral component means one should feel bad if your mocking them lead to their suicide. It ain't that hard.

or being cheated on...

or having amnesia...

I don't think any of those instances are above being spoofed.
12775373, I agree with you. I didn't saw they were above being spoofed. I once joked

to this lady who reached out to shake my hand with her left land "you know in some countries it's considered rude to shake hands with your left hand" all jokes and laughing. It didn't occur to me that she didn't have a right hand until she held up her nub.

I felt bad about that. Does it mean I should never have made that comment or should never make it again going forward? no. Doesn't change I felt bad about how it played out in that one instance.
