12742895, DMV OKPs: What Can You Tell Me About Oakton, VA
Posted by DVS, Thu Mar-05-15 09:34 AM
I've been looking at positions to get closer to the Eastern Seabord....1st bite of anything in that region is Oakton.

All I can tell you now is its not far from D.C.

The pay alone would be worth the move but the places I've been seeing in the area are higher price point than the ones in the uppity areas of Chicago

Lemme know what you know

12742903, I don't know Oakton specifically, but that's Fairfax county
Posted by John Forte, Thu Mar-05-15 09:38 AM
Close to DC + arguably the best school system in the country = expensive as fuck.
12742942, I peeped that quick
Posted by DVS, Thu Mar-05-15 09:57 AM
It's in the same pay tier as Chicago (the only thing higher is like New York and LA)....and I remember looking at the schools briefly when I applied.

I wonder if we can get away with living in a 1 bedroom for a year lol

D
12742961, Yeah, oakton is Fairfax Co
Posted by Binlahab, Thu Mar-05-15 10:08 AM
I work out there, beautiful area, schools are awesome, amenities out the ass...lots of white people and Asians. Real estate is expensive but you don't have to live there in order to work there.
12742965, Long as you don't have to drive into DC...lol

If you living and working out there than you're straight...

Northern VA traffic will work your nerves...

12743380, expensive and close to DC but it will not be a quick trip

Not sure how much you know about the area but traffic is a major issue for most people. Oakton is in one of the counties bordering DC and has excellent schools. It's outside the beltway or circular freeway that loops DC and the inner suburbs. Oakton is along I66 which is a MAJOR bottleneck (even on the weekend). The FFX area as a whole is crazy expensive and very suburban. Expect to pay $500k + for a regular SF home.

depends on what you are looking for. Kids? Plan on living in Oakton? Go to DC a lot? Cost of living is going to be expensive. If you are looking to buy you are probably not going to spend less than 300K anywhere in the area and if looking for SFR i would expect something in the 500K range. If renting it depends on what you need as far as amenities are concerned. Oakton is kind of a weird enclave between Vienna, Reston and Fairfax. Very good schools for public and plenty of options for private if you have kids. I have been here most of my life if you have any questions feel free to ask.
12743824, My check in point will be Oakton
Posted by DVS, Fri Mar-06-15 09:11 AM
If I get the position, I'd be coming in from Chicago and looking for a rental until I got my feet under me. Based upon the prices, that means I'd probably be looking into Vienna. More expensive than the South Side of Chi but not much more expensive than the North Side...I can swing it.

I'd have two elementary age children so I'm definitely looking at school districts. The only people I know in the DC area will be OKPs which means I won't be coming into the city often unless I'm driving the company car. I WILL be traveling back and forth to Richmond frequently...and I've seen that traffic so I already know it sucks and to plan to leave early as hell.

I'll see how the 2nd interview goes but in terms of business power moves...this would be one of my biggest steps.

12744243, Vienna is nice
Posted by josephmurf2384, Fri Mar-06-15 03:15 PM
has a nice little old town and than you can make it over to the Tysons area for shopping, dining, movies etc. Should be plenty of stuff to keep you and the kids occupied. I grew up here and they had rec basketball, football, baseball, soccer and swim in pretty much any town. From Vienna you can take metro into DC for day trips and stuff.
12743737, Make that move!

like...
stupid expensive..
and you got children...
it's 2x more expensive...

I prefer anywhere in Northern VA over Maryland though...
In NOVA, it's just easier to settle in an area and exist....IMO...

Best bet is to find an apartment nearby and spend the year exploring different areas before you settle. A LOT of folks are going to try and steer you towards MD....especially Black folks..... Before you follow....just really peep the offerings and look at the big picture.
12744098, I'll pay the cost of living for a doper neighborhood
Posted by DVS, Fri Mar-06-15 12:55 PM
I'd just be spending my savings on private schools and security systems anyway

12744128, and what's wrong with maryland? lol

I just don't fck with MD too tough.
I've lived in every major jurisdiction inside the beltway and adjacent to the beltway in the DMV....... VA won out..hands down.
12744199, There's a lot wrong with PG...and I live here...lol

good luck.
.
12744240, not sure what kind of work you are in
Posted by josephmurf2384, Fri Mar-06-15 03:12 PM
but one of the good things about the area is it has a very stable job market. If for some reason you did not like it you could more tahn likely find something else if you didn't want to move back.
