12740452, All the dope house DJs got old, man
Posted by 8-bit, Tue Mar-03-15 09:24 AM
Used to have to choose between house spots in NYC a few years back. Now, seems like they are all gone. Vinyl, Limelight, Shelter (tho I think Regisford still spins on Sunday. I gotta work Mondays), Medina at the APT, etc.

Same in Philly. All the parties I took for granted back in the day are gone. I'd gladly pay $20 for one of those $10 parties to come back.

I don't trust what these new folks call "house." Shit just isn't the same, and from what I've heard is a little to close to EDM for me.
12740454, ...and they're still spinning.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Mar-03-15 09:26 AM
i was out to see Tony Humphries, David Morales and Louie Vega here in Chicago to celebrate Frankie Knuckles' birthday in January. (i had a fucking blast - they turned it the hell out and i almost hurt myself that night LOL)

Danny Krivit was here a couple weeks ago.

Danny Tenaglia is still working too - he's doing Coachella this yr.

12740463, I'd love it if Tony Humphries, Morales and LLV came to Philly/NYC
Posted by 8-bit, Tue Mar-03-15 09:31 AM
For some reason, a lot of these guys are TERRIBLE about updating their websites with events (age, maybe?). Gotta plan ahead since I have a 7yo. Sigh... I guess I'd better start researching April/May parties now, lest I miss the one tweet they sent out about it.

Edit: Looks like LLV spins at Cielo. Hmm...
12740467, word.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Mar-03-15 09:32 AM
i check the events calendar at my favorite local venues/parties to keep up.
12740466, thats kinda nonsense
Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Mar-03-15 09:32 AM
Im as anti-EDM/pro-House as anyone and i strongly disagree
12740469, most of the legends are still working.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Mar-03-15 09:33 AM
it's pretty awesome.

but most of them seem to work most often overseas. :-(
12740473, if he is in NYC he is in better shape than even you or i
Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Mar-03-15 09:39 AM
Although where Detroit and Chicago will always win is with the locals

But NYC gets big names all the time

I think its that some ppl need that "soulful house" that we didnt have anything nice to say about last time lol
12740487, Wait... what do you mean by "soulful house?"
Posted by 8-bit, Tue Mar-03-15 09:46 AM
>I think its that some ppl need that "soulful house" that we

Got links?

I probably *do* like a lot of that stuff. Got into house in the late 80s (Plastic Dreams was the first track I remember), and have a preference for the slower Chicago-style house, but I do like the fast-paced NYC shit too.

Not sure what counts as "soulful house" or not, unless you are talking about those godawful vocal edits (like the Whitney Houston or Sade ones). I hate that shit with a passion.
12740492, i dont have a good example for you actually
Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Mar-03-15 09:51 AM
When i hear it i tune out because its kinda sleepy to me. In Detroit deep house still knocks and has people sweating out their hairdos. Soulful house is background lounge music to me.

When you said stripped down tracks i assumed you meant something like this

Marquis Hawkes - Outta This Hood: http://youtu.be/6vODGVrN9TU

That is a great example of my favorite style of house and is the exact opposite of soulful house
12740495, Yeah, the song you linked knocks

I agree. This one dude at the record shop used to call soulful house "downtempo" in the record stores around here (had to go to that section to find that stuff). Not bad for the car, but just not the right energy for the club.

Yup. I love that sound. I love how these tracks punch, especially on big speakers. Here's one of my favorites:

12740504, Acid is definitely still around too. heres a label rec:
Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Mar-03-15 10:09 AM
Clone Recordings, specifically the sublabel Jack 4 Daze

Check out some of those artists and tracks and try working outward from there

Marquis Hawkes, Alden Tyrell, Geeeman aka Gerd Janson

You may also like some of the stuff on Ultramajic

Regarding that old stuff...the Dance Mania compilation Hardcore Traxxx has been in my rotation for 6 months solid. LOTS of acid & ghetto bangers on there
12740471, A lot of these new DJs around here spin a lot of EDM-flavored stuff
Posted by 8-bit, Tue Mar-03-15 09:37 AM
I came up on stripped-down, 80s & 90s Chicago & NYC house, as well as some early techno and without a doubt the stuff that I've heard a lot of younger DJs spin is a lot different than that.

Maybe you live where there are still DJs spinning older stuff, but a lot of the stuff I've heard these younger DJs spinning sounds over-produced and lacks the "feel" of the classics.
12740481, well i realized you may have meant locals
Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Mar-03-15 09:43 AM
And you may very well be right if thats the case. I dont know what the NYC/Philly young guns are playing.

But people are still making house and techno with that spirit and there are many great touring DJs who play it.
12740489, I gotta get out to Chicago and Detroit one day soon
Posted by 8-bit, Tue Mar-03-15 09:49 AM
Especially Detroit. I want to hear a real Techno DJ from the D throw down at least once in my life.
12740494, until that day comes

12740594, Good looking out.
Posted by 8-bit, Tue Mar-03-15 11:05 AM
this post reminds me that I gotta get back out and hear some tunes this year.
12740570, the reason disclosure blew so hard is because they bright the 90s back
Posted by Binlahab, Tue Mar-03-15 10:52 AM
Thats my shit right there.

Not this edm flavored wait for the drop skrillex shit

Its cool I guess but thats not what I'm trying to hear

12740587, well they also had pop songwriting
Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Mar-03-15 11:00 AM
They never would have gotten on the radio without that
12740593, what hall dismiss as soulful house is my fav genre
Posted by Binlahab, Tue Mar-03-15 11:04 AM
Pop songwriting + 90s era house instrumentals = binlahab two stepping like a maniac for 6 hrs straight

does it really matter?

wonder what bin's doing?

12740591, *this* The buildup to crescendo, then the drop FUCKING SUCKS

>Not this edm flavored wait for the drop skrillex shit

Some old-school techno used to get this right, but these new songs rely on this way too much.
12740497, funkbox is still going strong
