12739771, But do we really mean to spoil our kids?
Posted by tully_blanchard, Mon Mar-02-15 03:15 PM
Or are we (me, lol) raising a brat?

The 11 year olds iphone 5 charger died on her yesterday. Her older brother (20) had been sharing her charger until he found his cord. He wasnt at home last night, and her phone was dying. She almost had a fit because her phone was dying and "I need another cord, because I hate sharing a charger!"

I was cool.."look child, you're about to go to bed anyway. When your brother gets home, I'll get the cord from him and charge your phone, ahite?"

Bothered me..not cause of the "when I was your age...blah blah blah", but because my baby girl cant see beyond "I hate sharing cords" to "Oh, okay"

...weigh in...I can take it...

12739784, tough call. she got a phone, you supposed to have a charger on deck.
Posted by Deadzombie, Mon Mar-02-15 03:20 PM
and sharing the cord kinda means that he has to be mindful of her access to it.

i think there is frustration from her sharing the cord with HIM.
12739789, I spoil mine, but they are used to rejection.

12739796, the 20 year old has to get their own cord. either find the lost one
Posted by BigJazz, Mon Mar-02-15 03:24 PM
or buy a new one.

the 11 year old is getting a lesson in the inconvenience of helping other people. sometimes it sucks. but you do it anyway.

also, your point about the time is valid. it's too late to be using it so don't worry about not being able to use it. the charger will arrive likely after you've gone to sleep and i'll plug your phone in so that it'll be charged when you wake up.

Her cord just died yesterday, like, right before the meltdown

12739867, right? like why wasn't another cord purchased in the weeks that
Posted by Fishgrease, Mon Mar-02-15 03:52 PM
it was lost? I'm sure being 20 yrs old he pissed away the $10-$20 odd dollars that couldve been used to get another.

man, get one off amazon now http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_5/190-0242916-2118675?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=lightning+cable&sprefix=light%2Caps%2C230

12739896, That was on him to buy, and she was cool with it.
Posted by tully_blanchard, Mon Mar-02-15 04:00 PM
The only time he ever really used it was when she was asleep, so whatever.

Her main problem yesterday was her cord stopped working RIGHT THEN, RIGHT THERE, and she wanted her phone charged RIGHT THEN RIGHT THERE, when it was basically her bedtime. No way i was leaving the crib RIGHT THEN RIGHT THERE (8:45p) to get her another.

1-It was time for bed

2-Big bro would be home in a few, and I told her I'd get his cord and charge her phone

3-Wasnt about to drag her up the street to get one (she woulda had to come with me..and for real, doing that wouldve added to the problem)

4-The Walking Dead was about to come on.

Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Mar-02-15 05:06 PM
You also said YOU found his charger.

maybe im reading it all wrong tho...

12740080, ahh..i see what youre saying
Posted by tully_blanchard, Mon Mar-02-15 06:15 PM
It went down like this.

He lost his, and they were sharing. Cant fault them for workin it out and sharing (is caring), but best believe I was on him to buy a new one. He's lazy and cheap, and I guess was okay with "Hey (girlfriend), let me get my little sisters charger so I can call you back" (so whoever said they felt sorry for HIM having to share his charger with his sister, think about that).

I found his on accident. Wasnt looking for it, but saw a cord and was like "hey...who's is this"

Since there was now two cords, he took his with him, and hers went out last night.

i just try my best to impress upon them that there are alot of kids that don't get nearly as much shit as we bust our ass to get them. also, material shit is not nearly important as love and caring for one another.

its hard bc if you cant make ur kids happy, what the fuck is money for?
12740020, IKR... back in the day it was "oh well, guess you can't use that phone anymore"

I suggest getting an eastern collective charger for the girl
12740221, let's start with "11 year old has an iPhone..."
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Mon Mar-02-15 09:40 PM
Tha fuck kinda world is this where an 11 year old has a goddamned iPhones???

11!!!

My 11 year old doesn't even have his own phone... And neither does my 12 year old for that matter... but yours has an iPhone??? What, exactly the fuck, does an 11 year old need with an iPhone???

We're likely going to get the 12 year old a Net10 cheapie joint she can make calls on soon, but that's really all a kid of that age could even require.

i used to work for apple and people were buying iPod touches for 2 year olds.
iphones for 11 year olds is definitely 'a sign of the times'

Posted by Deadzombie, Mon Mar-02-15 10:03 PM
you might not have had the same reaction.

his language was lazy, he wasn't trying to exert ownership.

but you were.
12740246, he didnt set me off
Posted by GirlChild, Mon Mar-02-15 10:13 PM
i was making it clear that it belongs to me and must be treated with care

he's two, now is the time to teach behavioral thing
aint nothing petty about that.

some people don't teach their kids accountability or the fact they arent owed anything. i am not that parent.
12740248, it needs to be treated with care, no matter who owns it.
Posted by Deadzombie, Mon Mar-02-15 10:17 PM
i know my stance seems prickish, but i could keep going.

i still think parents like to assert 'an ownership' over their items.

but i think it's usually a response language.

sometimes, i think that seems petty.

you mentioned he was asking for the device, not tossing it like a frisbee.

*full disclosure*

It's a 1st generation. My first(and only) iPad that my wife got me for Christmas when they first came out....

shit's PERFECT for a toddler.....except the occasional app that requires the latest version of iOS to work....

.
12740431, you didn't go out and buy it for the 2 year old...
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Mar-03-15 08:50 AM
that's a lil different.

I'm sure by the time my baby is 2 or 3 we will have an old ipad or tablet they can play with but we won't go out and buy a new one just for the kid
12740438, no. BUT....BUUUUUT...i'm on the verge of buying her an Android tablet...
Posted by FLUIDJ, Tue Mar-03-15 09:03 AM
because real talk.....the education apps out here shit all over these crappy ass VTEC and Leapfrog "learning" toys....

I def. can't stomach the cost of an iPad for her....but i'm really coming around to the idea of dropping $150 on a tablet for her. The iPad is cool....but it's just too big and heavy for portability.
.
12740377, Ha..yeah...it's one of those things
Posted by tully_blanchard, Tue Mar-03-15 06:32 AM
Give a little bit, but don't give too much.

Does she have her own laptop, ipad/tablet? Nah.

An iphone? Yeah. Didnt break the bank (I work for AT&T, so the monthly bill aint shit). We told her once she got to middle school she could get a smart phone, and that's what she wanted. The girl is a straight A student (in an IB school), so it's nothing. She got it last summer..cost me what..like 30 bucks at Target or something like that? Not trippin at all. It's nothing compared to what "the other kids at school" have. Iphone 6+ and shit like that. Her having that is showing her that yeah, you aint the broke black girl at school, but you aint (too) spoiled either. We're willing to give a little, but know your limits.

and you'll be rewarded. My kids are truly spoiled tho. But they don't act like brats. My 14 year old daughter has her own piano, electric guitar w/ amp, full killer drum set, hdtv mounted on the wall, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, ipad, iphone, laptop, surround sound in her room, etc. That girl got errythang. But she is so humble and meek and quick to help folk.

My 10 year old son is the same way. They get errythang. But they work hard in school, church, and listen to me and my wife intently. I couldn't ask for better kids really. They're like my little soldiers.
