12735354, so why are YOU sleeping on jazmine sullivan?
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Tue Feb-24-15 08:35 PM
listening to this album for the first time in a minute like wtf
NOBODY is talking about this album
but for WHY??
12735357, Her concepts got redundant
Posted by iKilan, Tue Feb-24-15 08:47 PM
her vocal range is impressive, but her style is pretty stagnant.

Melonie fiona syndrome.

and i think the public didnt connect with her image physically, which is silly, but probably the case
12735363, hmm. interesting.
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Tue Feb-24-15 09:03 PM
never really listened to her first album but i feel like her second album concept wise is pretty dope.
12736056, The image angle is the only valid one
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Wed Feb-25-15 03:18 PM
Nobody cares about concept redundancy on a mainstream level
She's a Black women singing R&B
She'd get love if she looked like Amy Winehouse or Adele... ppl would then talk about
how incredibly soulful she is
12735361, This album is banging...Mascara is my shit.
Posted by Stoogie, Tue Feb-24-15 08:54 PM
JHud's recent album is dope as hell too.
12735369, I love her album
Posted by gunh, Tue Feb-24-15 09:16 PM
and her voice, plus she writes
I think maybe she's not turnt up
enough for this generation
12735375, Her album is my shit!
Posted by catalyst, Tue Feb-24-15 09:27 PM
Didn't feel it much on the listen. Was sitting at work one day, gave it another run & couldn't figure out what the hell I missed on the first go run. Mascara, Brand New, Silver Lining, Stanley....my joints. Her show next week is sold out here, but I'm determined to luck up on some tix.
12735382, RE: so why are YOU sleeping on jazmine sullivan?
Posted by double 0, Tue Feb-24-15 09:48 PM
She's selling decent enough units for r&b in 2015... She did 25k first week I think and is still in top 50.. So she's selling over 6k a week.. Thats pretty damn good..

The gen pop only accepts diva r&b if Ariana grande sings it.. And she cant out k michelle k michelle so she's in a precarious spot if she wants to scale..

I think she initially dropped in a more open time for r&b.. I mean her.. Even Elle varner sold 200k+ records... But getting even a release date now is a struggle
12735416, Thought this said "with."

12736274, Me too, then I felt all warm inside.
Posted by Monkey Genius, Wed Feb-25-15 06:57 PM
12735432, her music is for women who flush drugs when the police are at the door
Posted by atruhead, Wed Feb-25-15 12:34 AM
.
12735490, holy shit.
Posted by murderbear, Wed Feb-25-15 09:03 AM

12735592, damn. LOL
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Feb-25-15 10:25 AM
12735602, hoodlove is all about that definitely
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Wed Feb-25-15 10:35 AM
but i don't agree.

i think there's a reason why the album is called 'reality show'
its supposed to be a tragic album
that touches on the flawed psyche of women in love for all the wrong reasons.

but ^^^none of that is funny though so i'll let you chef it up.
12736033, most of her career has been "hood chic", like the female Jaheim
Posted by atruhead, Wed Feb-25-15 03:04 PM
I dont know who she is in real life, maybe some label exec advised her to make "Bust Your Windows"

but she's way too vocally talented for all of the ride or die bitch/down for my nigga/let me tell you how niggas aint shit anthems

it's an automatic turn off when I hear cursing in R&B and I hope one day she uses her gift with better written songs
12736043, people always bring up the same song tho lol
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Wed Feb-25-15 03:09 PM
she has more songs than bust the windows out your car.
although i didn't listen to the first album that much the whole album wasn't that.

and this album is definitely following a theme and the writing and shit is clever and it fits the theme. coupled with her singing its a very above average album, musically. *shrug*
12736185, I don't see how people skip over "Need U Bad" from that period though.
Posted by daryloneal, Wed Feb-25-15 04:54 PM
"Holdin' You Down" too.

Both of those still go hard.
12736248, word.
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Wed Feb-25-15 05:59 PM
i still play need u bad quite regularly.
12736219, atruhead, what if I told you that...
Posted by BabySoulRebel, Wed Feb-25-15 05:29 PM
Bust Your Windows was based on this song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaSy8yy-mr8

does that help your perceptions?
12736372, not really re: my perceptions
Posted by atruhead, Wed Feb-25-15 10:09 PM
all I see is a girl who can sing too well for her topic material

it's like if Laurence Fishburne was Madea, he's capable of so much more
12736224, some pretty talented women have sang 'men ain't shit' songs.
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Feb-25-15 05:33 PM
like:

Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Chaka Khan, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Beyonce, Whitney Houston...

it's a pretty common subject in song.
12736249, yep.
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Wed Feb-25-15 05:59 PM
12736270, She has plenty of times...
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Wed Feb-25-15 06:55 PM
>I hope one day she uses her gift with better written songs

I guess she didn't get the right white validation and cosigns for you to care tho. *shrugs*

12736373, wtf.
Posted by atruhead, Wed Feb-25-15 10:11 PM
why do you keep mentioning white validation? I've given her props for her talent. I just think she's been advised to "keep it ghetto" as a marketing scheme of some sort

12736402, Forgive me.
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Wed Feb-25-15 11:23 PM
>why do you keep mentioning white validation?

Because I'm sick of how much power ppl give it. For instance, we have a post in the
Lesson right now calling Rhymefest the goat ghostwriter because the artists he worked
with won a grammy and an oscar... as if those old white men determine who our goats are.
Folks consider them their acknowledgement the height of "making it".
This probably shouldn't be directed at you tho, as you tend to be fairly up on what's going
on before it gets white cosigns.
My bad.

12736063, You won't defend it until a white woman wins Grammys for it tho
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Wed Feb-25-15 03:20 PM
12736099, wat.
Posted by atruhead, Wed Feb-25-15 03:42 PM
12736106, When a white woman blows up off it, the "offense" will be that she's
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Wed Feb-25-15 03:47 PM
stealing from Black artists (like Jazmine Sullivan) AKA "culture vulturing" if you will.

But here we are trashing our Black artists beforehand.

12736165, I dont speak for all black people
Posted by atruhead, Wed Feb-25-15 04:43 PM
but I wont defend anything I dont like if a white person wins doing it

I see what you mean if that's an Iggy Azalea reference but she's still mocking music I consider trash
12736216, I'm not saying you do
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Wed Feb-25-15 05:23 PM
Just stand up for Blackness.
http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=4&topic_id=12681710&mesg_id=12681710&listing_type=search#12681931
You defend and support rappers who "flush drugs down the toilet" but it's "trash" when
a Black woman (who can sing her ass off) makes music that makes you think of the same shit?
Suspect (and sexist).

12735479, Ever since "My Foolish Heart" I liked her, but I really don't know
Posted by T Reynolds, Wed Feb-25-15 08:39 AM
many of her songs. If folks could recommend some of her stuff in here that would be dope
12735489, which album are you talking about?
Posted by tariqhu, Wed Feb-25-15 09:00 AM
I only have the first. liked it, but never checked for the other.
12735491, she's like a more talented Teedra Moses
Posted by esb225, Wed Feb-25-15 09:04 AM
I want her to get some better song writers though
12735496, shes a serial abuser in song. hella emotional abuse
Posted by Binlahab, Wed Feb-25-15 09:07 AM
i beat the windows out your car
forever isnt long these days

that kinda shit

if a male singer had a bunch of songs abt how shitty & rotten women are...he wouldnt have a career

does it really matter?

wonder what bin's doing?

12735503, she putting the blues back in rhythm and blues.

12735515, it never left.
Posted by Binlahab, Wed Feb-25-15 09:24 AM

12735525, RE: she putting the blues back in rhythm and blues.
Posted by RaphaelSoulLee, Wed Feb-25-15 09:33 AM
I think that JUST may be my issue. As much as the "blues" portion of R&B has carried me throughout my life, I just don't have the emotional capacity to withstand them heavy joints, these days. Same thing with Fiona. All that being said, this is how I feel about her though:

Voice = Dope
Vibrato = Crazy
Runs = Sick
12735512, That's how it get you when you least expect it, and you can't reject it
Posted by Geah, Wed Feb-25-15 09:23 AM
LET
IT
BURN
12735570, ^ the only 1 that really did it for me.
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Feb-25-15 10:05 AM
12735535, in love with her voice
Posted by MiracleRic, Wed Feb-25-15 09:40 AM
but her music never resonated with me

not enough something there...

she gets there on like 2 songs per album

i have yet to check out the most recent one...

she's mostly been a disappointment bc the voice alone has so much to offer
12735565, Been wondering the same thing
Posted by kb23, Wed Feb-25-15 10:02 AM
B/c her latest album is in heavy rotation. I think this album is more diverse then her past albums, and I also think the bust yo windows song made ppl typecast her as a male basher.

I know I'll be at her show next week probably singing along to Let It Burn like I wrote it!
12735567, the album didn't grab me.
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Feb-25-15 10:03 AM
except for whatever song has the After 7 interpolation in it.
12735568, brand new is that shit!!
Posted by lightworks, Wed Feb-25-15 10:03 AM
12735584, her voice is AMAZING....so i cant believe she is being slept on
Posted by bleekgilliam_420, Wed Feb-25-15 10:14 AM
but i went that album and i just cant with most of the song themes. i cant relate at all.

forever don't last for is the shit though.
12736009, I've been telling everyone know about this album.
Posted by daryloneal, Wed Feb-25-15 02:54 PM
Her writing is really brilliant.

The production is on point too.

I have an all new respect and admiration for her because of this album.

Let It Burn
Mascara
Brand New
Silver Lining
Forever Don't Last
Stanley
Masterpiece

Yep.
12736028, agreed.

Her voice is ... (fill in the blank with a word I don't own).

Saw her a few months ago when she was in NYC... seeing her again when she's back in couple weeks.

I've been a fan since 'Braid My Hair.'
12736095, word she must be incredible live
