12732466, Let's talk about Rims for a minute
Posted by placee_22, Fri Feb-20-15 11:59 AM
Do the kids these days even give a shit about rims?

I remember a time when that was the goal. A nigga would work 2 jobs just to put them thangs on his raggedy ass ride.

Now, I hardly even see 'em .

Granted, I live in ATL now, which even at the height of flossin, never came close to N.O., Houston, etc.

But man at a certain point in time, if you had Daytons on Vouges on any damn thing (Cutlass, Regal, Yugo) couldn't anybody tell you shit.

Now, I couldn't tell you the last time I saw some non-factory rims that made me look twice.

Is this still a thing where you are, or just a thing of the past?

somehting.

Mobile cats was heavy in N.O. back in the day, so I know the was on that shit.
12732469, they're still a thing.
Posted by tariqhu, Fri Feb-20-15 12:02 PM
not as much as the 80s-90s. but I might just see them more since I live in the Dec.
12732483, not a thing anymore. the jokes about rims costing more than the car
Posted by southphillyman, Fri Feb-20-15 12:12 PM
made ppl reevaluate it
i paid $1800 for a set of 18s in 2002 right before all star weekend came to philly
i was shitting on the majority of the young bols in my area on the strength of the wheels alone
now days it takes alot more then $2k worth of something to stunt effectively

12732489, yes but not the chrome rims, Alloys, gunmetal's and dark wheels are in now.
Posted by Huey, Fri Feb-20-15 12:15 PM
12732494, yeah. it's not just chromed out like it used to be
Posted by T Reynolds, Fri Feb-20-15 12:17 PM
12732497, makes sense. I also see a lot of cars w/ flat finish paint jobs too. I think
Posted by placee_22, Fri Feb-20-15 12:19 PM
it looks good on the right ride, but that shit would have been blasphemy in the 90s. High gloss was all there was.
12732551, a lot of people are using plastidip on their rims

12732510, SW USA got rims on erruhthang
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Fri Feb-20-15 12:32 PM
AZ, NM, NV, CA... These cats put rims on everything they can an dit ain't limited by race or age either. I remember some years ago when I worked at Honeywell seeing some geriatric white woman leaving the office in a Jaguar sittin on some shiny shits. While I was working in Scottsdale I was sittin at the light next to a 40-something year old white woman in an old-school Taurus with rims bangin the shit outta Too $hort's "Cusswords".

12732531, I think that scene peaked with Sprewell's and 22 inch rims
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Fri Feb-20-15 12:47 PM
I remember feeling underwhelmed when they started pushing rims above 22 inches... like, ok, I get it, you can make rims even bigger than before *yawn*

Now I think most folks are happy with factory alloys and only the real car modders put much effort into getting custom wheels.

the day you see a Geo Metro, 3rd/4th gen Honda Civic, Ford Aspire/Festiva, or some other tiny little shitbox rollin on wheels so big it looks like a tiny stagecoach you'll change your mind about it being only tuners throwin rims on their cars.

12732546, same goes for "systems"
Posted by melmag, Fri Feb-20-15 12:59 PM
music you can hear from 10 blocks away. you hardly hear those anymore.

Rims, loud music, big chains, grillz, etc. Guess they all went away with the bling era of rap music. I'm grateful

>music you can hear from 10 blocks away. you hardly hear those
>anymore.

Loud ass systems are still a thing out this way and it's not limited to young black, white, or latino males either. I've heard bass comin from pickup trucks with mariachi music on blast all over Phoenix, Las Vegas, and LA/Orange County. I've sat in heavy traffic next to older white dudes in Benzes with hip hop BANGIN out the trunk (in one instance dude had to be in his early 50's in the drop top Benz with Posse on Broadway cranked so loud it had my rearview mirror shaking violently).

12732665, Plastic spinner hub caps helped to fuck the game up
Posted by 8-bit, Fri Feb-20-15 02:19 PM
I started seeing A LOT of plastic hub caps that looked like chrome at a glance. They even had spinner jawns. I'd now see women with "spinners" on their corollas or whatever. Shit seemed like it just got played-out because any douche could now emulate that look with little investment.
12732796, hubcaps were always like that though

When "hammers" were the shit in the late 80's/early 90's there were hubcaps that looked just like 'em. Same for daytons, and just about any other wheel style that was huge at any given point.
