12730299, Chicago: RIP Funky Buddha Lounge...
Posted by CRichMonkey, Wed Feb-18-15 12:41 PM
It's bittersweet, but it was time. The place had sunken to new lows of ratchet and reckless.

But we can still reminisce on the good ol' days because it was a spot that defined an era for so many folks.

And if you try to say it didn't, you lie.

Shit, I could write a chapter in a book about all the times I sonned Jannero Pargo at the door. One time I told him we don't let anyone in that averages single digits. Another time I think I gave him some drink tickets and told him I read about his contract and was probably gonna need them.

That place... it'll be missed.

And this dude rolled up on me like, "Yo, I used to HATE you 'cause of how you treated me and my people at Buddha."

Knowing the contours of my responsibilities in that job, I took it as a compliment. But I got paid to be a dick. I can't deny that's the job description.

12730485, it was still open? in 2015?
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Feb-18-15 02:10 PM
who in the hell was going?

LOL

it was fine in the beginning except for their ridiculous door situation - they'd hold a 20 minute line when there was NO ONE inside. i went through that like 2x before i stopped fucking w/that joint. plus the crowd was eh and the drinks were overpriced. it was doing too much.

12730534, I'll let you in on a secret; most of the time when they held the door...
Posted by CRichMonkey, Wed Feb-18-15 02:35 PM
It wasn't to get a line forming outside, it's because something was broken.

Usually the women's bathroom. And you can't open a club with a bathroom that doesn't work, so we'd just hold the line.

There was no conspiracy, just bad pipes.

Posted by SoWhat, Wed Feb-18-15 02:42 PM
damn.

i feel bad about some of the rants i've issued outside various clubs over the yrs. i had never thought there could be some drama like that going on inside.

thanks.
12730556, You don't make money off the line...
Posted by CRichMonkey, Wed Feb-18-15 02:43 PM
You want people in and drinking at that bar, so holding the line at the beginning of the night is bad business.

12730880, Man, it's even been times where the sound/DJ equipment was fucked up
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Wed Feb-18-15 06:47 PM
and they wouldn't open tip 10:30-10:45 instead of 10.

A few cases, the sound engineer or manager would have to call up their sister clubs, or equipment rental spots last minute, to get a main mixing board working. I even got to my usual Friday night spot once, and they all had ZERO idea that someone had taken the main DJ mixer...I had to drive all the way from Santa Monica to damn South Central n back to get mine, so club opened like 40 minutes late SMH.

You get groupies off it?

1. What years were you there?

2. What specific formats did you play? Commercial in like the Nelly way, or nothing beyond Jay-Z or Flipside? House? How much old school was played?

3. What was the crowd like? Was it different based on the nights?

4. Were y'all using CDJs?

5. Wait, how can you be the doorman on some nights, and the DJ on others??? And I assume you weren't bouncer-security door man, but more like the promoter type

6. What's 2-3 of the wildest things that happened there?
