12729991, What Google products do you use other than search?
Posted by Mongo, Wed Feb-18-15 10:39 AM
Gmail, Maps and Calendars are staples for me. Its Music locker has proven a Godsend. Drive was good, but Dropbox better suits my needs. Wallet is pretty okay. I've used it to move money around before committing more fully to Paypal and Square. Plus, Hangouts, and Inbox are... iono. Meh.

I suppose Android and Chrome count as well.

I use Chrome @ work almost exclusively.

Had an Android phone before doubling down on the iOS teat.

But how committed are you to This Google Life?

to figure it out and incorporate it and transition to it over regular gmail....

and it still lacks a key feature of Gmail>>> ease of attaching files to an email especially from Google Drive. They REALLY need to fix this....

I don't really believe they're going to fully commit to it though....I predict them dropping it after 2 years....

and it'll track your physical activities in the background.

walking
running
jogging
biking

you can set some activity goals and it'll give you a running log of how close you are to meeting it...

I like that you don't need a stupid band or device on your wrist for it to work. It uses your phone's built in gadgetry...assuming your phone has the necessary gadgetry that is.....

I'm amazed at how accurate it is...It knows the difference between me doing a walk...jog...run...or bike ride. I can review the day and see when I did each type of activity and it's usually spot on. Not interaction or input is required on my end which is a HUGE plus....
12730020, I feel like Hangouts is missing 1 or 2 little things...
Posted by Marbles, Wed Feb-18-15 10:57 AM

>Hangouts (if you're not using Hangouts..your a DUMBASS)

I want it to be my main texting app. But I'd like for them to have a private option where certain incoming text messages require a password to be viewed. And I'd like for it to have a delay timer before sending the message.
12730040, hmmm.....not sure if they'd ever add that..but you could password/PIN
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Feb-18-15 11:03 AM
protect the app itself if you wanted to.
I use this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thinkyeah.smartlockfree&hl=en

I hate having my whole phone locked down just to protect a few privacy sensitive apps...so that app was a huge win for me....

as far as delay timer.... I dunno the use scenario for that...

But Hangouts will handle SMS now in case you didn't know. So it can be your only app for all messaging needs.

12730064, RE: hmmm.....not sure if they'd ever add that..but you could password/PIN

Good point. I guess I could just lock down the whole app. I might give that a shot.

>as far as delay timer.... I dunno the use scenario for
>that...

Both Go SMS Pro & the stock messaging app have this. Sometimes, I'll send a message and then look at it and see a mistake or something that auto-correct mangled. With the delay timer, you have a couple of seconds to pick up an error or correct it.

>But Hangouts will handle SMS now in case you didn't know. So
>it can be your only app for all messaging needs.

Yeah, it's quickly becoming my favorite.
12730013, Gmail is it.

The place I worked at the last three years used Calendar for our schedules but I worked the same shifts every week so I never checked it.

It's weird I'm 26 but I really feel old when it comes to technology these days. Well, not technology but applications. I mean I use TextEdit (a basic text program that comes with Mac OS X) when I'm writing up a text document...and I have Office!

And I took the credo of gmail to heart, that I would never run out of room ever again, so I have not deleted a SINGLE email, and because the search works fine I haven't tagged or categorized anything. I just have 60000 emails sitting in an inbox, 57000+ never having been read.

12730441, wait, what?? You might be confused @ how/what Google Voice is
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Feb-18-15 01:46 PM
fam...

This is the scenario I use:

Google Voice handles my voicemail instead of VZW. This allows me to retrieve, review, hear, etc. voicemails more like an inbox... The other advantage is the ability to make voice calls over data instead of using minutes (this obviously isn't a big deal in 2015 since no one really uses up minutes anymore).

Another HUGE bonus is you can use Google Voice as your universal phone number as it can be set to forward calls to multiple different phone numbers....

ie; set GV to ring your home, work, girl's house, mistresses' house, the club, etc all at the same time.... only give out your GV# and you're in biz....
12730447, So the number is basically like having a separate voicemail box?
Posted by Mongo, Wed Feb-18-15 01:49 PM
Wow. Totally misinterpreted its value.
12730478, indeed..but actually moreso like a "Server" ....
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Feb-18-15 02:04 PM
Think of your Google Voice number as a Server and all of your other phone numbers as clients fed by the Google Voice.

It took me a year before I figured out the value it could have too...

but another cool thing (at least when it first came out) is that you can pick your own number...so for me, I picked a number with an area code in NC so that my parents could call me without using long distance....again...this was back when that was still a thing lol....

Def. revisit it if you can though....

12731051, fam it's a secratary
Posted by imcvspl, Thu Feb-19-15 01:12 AM
person calls you. it asks may i ask who's calling. one moment while i try to locate imcvspl for you. i can choose which phones it rings me on, or on my laptop. i can say oh that's so and so just have em leave a message. i can be like who the fuck is that and screen them leaving a message. i can answer on my mobile, my home phone or my laptop and carry on a convo. they leave a message i get a text with the googlized transcript of that message. shoot them a text.

and it keeps everyone at a safe distance so i never feel like i have to answer the phone.

i got scared when they rumored to take it down, but it's still working perfectly. without it i probably wouldn't talk to people at all. lol!

I'm so curious about those damned things, just because they're so inexpensive and easy.
12730635, I like it.
Posted by ChiBrownSkinLady, Wed Feb-18-15 03:29 PM
I mean, most of my computing can be done pretty easily without the need for any real heavy duty software, so I've been able to get away with it being my primary machine since I got it in 2012. The only thing I wish were better were a more dedicated Spotify app that has better functionality.

Though lately it's been a lil crashy. I think it's just because it's old. I mean, how long can you expect a 3-year old computer that only costs like $200 to last, y'know? But it's fast and easy, which works for me. I don't even really miss my old Macbook Pro to be honest.
12730637, Is the battery life really as amazing as they bill it?
Posted by Mongo, Wed Feb-18-15 03:31 PM
12730650, It was.
Posted by ChiBrownSkinLady, Wed Feb-18-15 03:43 PM
It wasn't uncommon for me to get 6+ hours of life from it. It's just started to taper the last several months. But I guess that's typical for any laptop, right? Now I get about 4 hours, which still isn't terrible, especially compared to what my old Macbook was clocking.

Sheets for this dumb google docs spreadsheet my sister is using to help organize her baby shower *sigh*.

I watch youtube occasionally. I have cable, netflix…so unless there's nothing else, (which is never), or I'm looking for something specific or click a video link, I don't just surf youtube out of boredom.
