Drake is a better rapper than J Cole and i'd guess a little more gifted than Kendrick.

Let me put it this way. If drake started doing the backpacker raps again, Kendrick would be out of a job.

Kendricks' only "leverage" is that he's hood and has references drake can't truly embody.

As you said, almost anything Drake makes ends up in the club solely because it's him, but a lot of em disappear from rotation forever once they're done. Can't tell you the last time I played Over, or Successful, or Headlines, or No new friends, or even Up all night which went hard.

But yea, it's 4-5 songs on here that I would bet on before this.

losing Wayne and Drake would definitely be a blow but he's still got Nikki and Rich Gang and will probably pick up new artists he can exploit. worst case scenario he can always cash out of music and do other shit.

lol...Nah dog...U gotta look at the bottom line. Nicki's numbers are waaaaay down....At this point she is famous because she's Nicki...But sales wise she is struggling hard with most of her buzz coming from social media...So that won't help Slim's/Birdman's bottom line unless they are getting a 360 deal and are taking money from Nicki's tour revenue and endorsements...

Drake is Cash Money's "Cash Cow"....The only reason to take them seriously as a label at this point...If he follows Wayne out the door, Nicki will be looking at the front door as well...

And Rich Gang? ....lol

I can't...

Yep...Pac, Jay and Ye have college courses...Not sure what that means in a discussion about Drake/Lamar though...

As for Pump faking? Don't know what that means in this context. At this point Lamar's project doesn't seem beholden to singles...

The thing is Drake will always be the bigger "star"...Much of that comes out of the type of music he makes. Dude had a single that was being played on Adult Contemporary R&B stations...So I don't think Drake's fanbase should be having strokes over what Lamar does in a commercial sense. Drake is the biggest selling rapper on the planet right now and consistently knocks out radio anthems. Dude is good...

As for "I"? I think u need to catch up to what's happening here. Lamar's last two leaked songs have had an even bigger impact than "I"...When u Google those two songs a shit load of debates, think-pieces and such pop up...They are giving dude that "voice of hip-hop" tag, which I'm pretty sure he's not comfortable with...Shit...who is?

I'll say it again. Drake is on his Jay-Z and Lamar is on his Nas shit...Actually, it's even more extreme....Their lanes at this point r a lot different.

What I find interesting is Drake fans feel threatened by the critical/cultural love fest surrounding Lamar, which is pretty weird when u think about it...Drakes's fans should be happy that their boy can shit a double platinum album and own radio...

12727122, The Jay vs Nas comparison is a good one...
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Feb-13-15 02:54 PM
cause Drake only raps about being famous and smashing women...

Kendrick is addressing social issues and talking about alcoholism, ADHD, Gangbanging, etc...

I guess that's what made Pac famous... he was able to balance both.

I think the fact that Kendrick has a loyal fanbase without the club hits has a few Drake fans shook.

Drake and Kenny are the 2 artist at the top of the game

In Drake post folk bring up Kenny

Kenny fans take anybody being critical of Kenny music as hate

Drake fans same thing (even tho most of the shyt that gets discussed non music related is hate)

But it's really that simple

It goes both ways

Indeed Sev...But they r on top of the game for two entirely different reasons. That's the point I was trying to get across...

I don't see the reason to compare them. And I don't see why their fans can't just keep it moving and enjoy the music...

To me it would be like comparing Whitney Houston to Erykah Badu....They both sing (in the case of Drizzy and K Dot, rap), but that's about it...

And yet the fans (more on Drake's side) go nuts over any of talk of DRAKE/LAMAR being in the same sentence...

I don't get it....
12727387, You compare them because they are rappers.
Posted by Heinz, Fri Feb-13-15 08:06 PM
All this lane talk is stupid. It never makes sense. If a rapper lacks the ability or want or whatever it is to talk about a certain subject or appeal to a certain type of person thats not a lane lol Thats just a limit to who they are as a rapper. Thats it. Every rapper, signed or unsigned just like ANY artist signed or unsigned are all in the same game. Some people naturally can gravitate to everyone, some cant. Some can do big songs. Some cant. It just is what it is. Nas and Jay are comparable because they are rappers. Jay can do more of what Nas can't. That it. He's an all around better rapper and artist. Same goes for Drake and Kendrick. *shrugs* its not rocket science guys.

Are Whitney fans really going to care about Badu's creativity?

Are Badu's fans really going to care that much about Whitney's vocal power?

U can certainly compare them SKILL wise.

The thing is Drake is THE STAR in hip-hop and is also THE PUNCHLINE. I don't think we've ever seen anything like this in hip-hop. We've had popular rappers that invoked hate. But not because they were deemed overtly sensitive, sing love songs, get tapped in the jaw by record moguls or post of passive aggressive flicks on social media...The whole meme with Drake is that he is softer than a strippers ass...

And that's what bothers his followers for the most part. There is still a certain scarlet letter that comes with being a Drake fan...

Luckily for his fans, Drake can rap his ass off when he wants to.

I say all this to underline my ongoing point.

Drake is a bigger commercial star than Lamar. Always will be. Sort of like MJ over Prince.....But the irony is MJ was still was worried about P...to the point where he wondered why people didn't take him as seriously as a songwriter as Prince (true story)....

That's Drake....He has the sales, the hits, the broads, and the movement. But it's obvious he wants the respect...

Back and forth? Nah...I think Drake is vastly talented....I also think he's the most important MC of the post Kanye generation...I don't think we have yet to see a movement-impact on the level in the last 10 years or so than Drake's first mixtape. It completely changed the tone and idea of what an MC could be....Genre-changing shit....

I also think Drake is at time ridiculous and easy to make fun of...And so does a lot of other folks who have no "beef" with Drake other than he is a meme generating dream much in the same way Kanye is...

That said....I'm a critic. This is what I do for a living, kiddo...I was at Drake's first New York show, Sev. U r not talking to a silly Kendrick Lamar fanboy....

Don't mistake me breaking down Drake's impact and image with me being on some TEAM KENDRICK shit...lol

Only reason I remember is cause of ur profession and it helped reinforce my beliefs about how useless music critics are

music is a personal experience and the opinion of a critic has virtually no value for the rest of the population

its much more subjective and it is difficult to get much of a consensus of critical opinion on a musical album because it is experienced differently by everyone

music is made to be experienced again and again and our feelings change with time

Some artists speak to us immediately and some grow on us

Some sound great on the first listen before we get sick of them and many never connect with us at all.

Each person has a unique journey with each artist/song

Add on the personal bias the critic may have (I just happened to be privy to yours)

Shyts useless

I respect the hustle tho.

This is exactly what I said about Drake in terms of calling him a "bitch":

Quote:

"There are a few instances, but two standout.....

His weird passive aggressive quotes following Lamar's "Control" verse being one of them...Every other rapper that got name checked (besides Papoose who took it to a very idiotic place...) either went in the studio to answer Kendrick Lamar or they praised the records' spirit....But Drake pulled the whole, "No one has even memorized that song" comment.....It was a moment of bitch-madeness....(new word!)..."

^^^^

If u notice, that post had nothing to do with Drake's music (which I dig on some joints) or the image he has. As stated it was his VERY emotional reaction to "Control..." I even said it was a "moment"...If u think that's calling Drake a bitch, then that's on u, homie....

"Oh yeah...A colleague of mines who recently interviewed him for a magazine (that shall remain nameless) mentioned how Drake became VERY defensive and agitated when Kendrick's name was brought up..."

This ^^^^^is where folks like yourself get tripped up. Lamar never took a shot at Drake. He mentioned Drake in a line with a bunch of other rappers that was more about the spirit of competition than anything else. Drake however was the only one that took it VERY personal, which spoke volumes. Lamar was not beefing with Drake...Until dude got bitchy in an interview....

Right now Lamar seems more concerned with doing him than having a pissing contest with Drizzy...Indeed, Drake puts out quality product...in his lane. Kendrick Lamar is going in another direction....

Actually, the only time I see Kendrick Lamar fans come out is when Drake fans cry about their hero not being respected and Lamar getting a pass for whateher he's doing at the moment...I rarely see Lamar fans bringing up Drake in their own threads without the subject coming up...

The truth is Drake is a superstar, high selling, mainstream artist who should not be concerned with Lamar. But for some reason he and his very sensitive fans are.

Again, I find that intriguing...

If I was 12 years old, sure I would think that he was taking shots at Drake...

But since I know what a real call out sounds and looks like and being a relatively old man who has been around the block and such, I'm going to say that Lamar seemed to be naming everyone that he had respect for...Everyone that has been deemed among the best lyrically. He's looking at these dudes like, "Y'all are dope...But u all r gonna have to deal with me..."

Drake is the only one that got emotional about it...

these beats are all very similar but I do like the sound, I've been intrigued by this "take the bass and make it sound like a rattling car frame" sound for a couple years now, can't remember what song I noticed it on first I think it was a Tyga track
I haven't had a car, or known someone with a system, in a while. curious how that pre-rattle sounds post-rattle.

I think this is cool, halfway through it's a smoother listen than Nothing Was the Same, maybe nothing as high as its highs and a little draggy. mostly because it all sounds so same I suppose.

not a big fan of Preach.

both albums have some real catchy songs and some fairly (or super, depending on which album you're talking about) thoughtful songs.

this album after a second and third listen basically feels like some NWTS b-sides. it's hot in the way Drake's status and talent can make just about anything hot, but in a vacuum I wouldn't argue it holds up especially well, there's not enough variation it's kind of all the same song and the second half isn't as interesting as the first as a result.

It's fun for right now.

Also, Future's Beast Mode is the best album of the year so far. Sorry Tetsuo.

But I already know my bias coming in. But I listened to these three tracks. Which seem to be pretty commonly liked in this thread... And... yo... the shit is just wack. Dude really in here talking about "no voices." That's not even my criticism but at some points the shit is indistinguishable from Rae Sremmurd (who I don't even dislike fyi). This shit being championed in 2015 is atrocious. Flows are wack. Lyrics are wack. Ad libs are wack. How many songs can you make talking about your success and your haters? If it were Kenny doing it

It'll be some hyperbolic ass commentary about how he's saving lives and changing the world

U thought cause of the social commentary joke and Kenny were talking about in their current music and the positive feedback it was getting that Drake would have to do the same or people weren't going to buy into it and it would be a wrap

U were proven wrong

Again.

He's selling cause he's making good music

Kanye is just as popular as Drake but u know y he's not poppin

Cause the music is trash

Nicki Minaj too

If the music ain't good folk ain't going to support

JCOLE ain't as popular as anybody I mentioned

Yet he moved 300k+ 1st week

Cause he made good music

Y is it so hard to admit he makes good music?

U bring down what little cred u do have even more

>I really have no vendetta. I just think the album sold because he's popular and it caused a big discussion

Is it sequenced and developed as his albums

No

But it's still a good quality album with plenty of tracks that will be getting played and quoted for the next '2 months'

12729699, I dont agree on his music being "good"
Posted by atruhead, Tue Feb-17-15 10:20 PM
people enjoy it, there's nothing for me to admit though.

if Kendrick's album does gold or better in a week, I'll say people were caught up in a moment, hopefully a moment with music I enjoy

I haven't denied Drake's ability to create big moments, but I do wonder how much longer he has left

also stalking my Twitter is weirdo shit, but hey.
12729706, Just cause u don't think his music is good
Posted by SeV, Tue Feb-17-15 10:42 PM
Doesn't mean that it's not

U do know that right?

U don't overvalue ur opinion on music that much do u?

>people enjoy it, there's nothing for me to admit though.
>
>if Kendrick's album does gold or better in a week, I'll say

>music I enjoy

Lol sure buddy

>
>I haven't denied Drake's ability to create big moments, but I
>do wonder how much longer he has left

Keep wondering.

U been wrongly predicting his downfall for the past 7yrs now

He's not a 1 dimensional rapper and he's too versatile and talented to fade away with a change in the music climate

U thought the rise of social commentary in rap was going to be it

Clearly it's not

>also stalking my Twitter is weirdo shit, but hey.

U got okps on ur twitter

So do i

Unfortunately ur name makes it on my timeline every now and then

But yea I did go search ya timeline when u said u didn't have a vendetta to see if I was trippin

And I wasn't

U tweeted about drake this past week than I have all year

>Doesn't mean that it's not
>U do know that right?
>U don't overvalue ur opinion on music that much do u?

I never said no one should like Drake's album because I dont. I really dont care what anyone likes. You take me not liking him more personally than anything, I dont bother arguing when you get to trolling about Kendrick anymore

>U been wrongly predicting his downfall for the past 7yrs now
>He's not a 1 dimensional rapper and he's too versatile and
>talented to fade away with a change in the music climate

you're lying. there's no way I could have predicted his downfall any time before 2014, he was way too big. and again I never said his career was a wrap, I just said I wonder how much longer it will last

>>also stalking my Twitter is weirdo shit, but hey.
>U got okps on ur twitter
>So do i
>Unfortunately ur name makes it on my timeline every now and
>then

you're also lying here. no one from here passed that around. glad to know you're paying attention though

I tweeted about Drake as much as anyone else did because he was a part of this week's discussion
12729726, Keep wondering/wishing
Posted by SeV, Tue Feb-17-15 11:15 PM

Drake has 7yrs under his belt

He ain't goin nowhere anytime soon

Like I said

Too versatile.

Too talented.

Worry about ur mans not pulling a 3stacks after this album or going into will.i.am territory to chase Grammys.

12729755, And I actually just sat thru ur whole podcast
Posted by SeV, Wed Feb-18-15 12:20 AM
I figured I should actually listen and offer some feedback

I don't think u had 1 cohesive thought the whole 30 minutes

like u were all over the place

And it's obvious you didn't kno wtf u were actually talking about as far as his music

Like u spend maybe a total of 5 minutes actually discussing the songs

And the rest rambling about bullshyt about Drake fans

And other preconceived ignorant thoughts about bullshyt that had little to nothing to do about the music

Lol wtf is this

ur wife dropped more logic and sense in 2 minutes than u did the whole 30

She actually seems normal

But yea

This shyt is horrible bruh

Maybe some editing would help

And u clearly have an agenda btw

No need to lie

U got an weird ass animosity towards him and anybody that likes his music

And the 'drakettes' thing basically encapsulated ur Cornballness perfectly

Geezus

but im banned tho.

Posted by Heinz, Tue Feb-17-15 09:32 PM
You have so many pockets full of them. You have other pockets full of weak troll lines too lol I have nothing invested in him yet u really hold that whole ex girlfriend thing so tightly lol My bad did i strike a nerve that I know the chick? If you knew the woman who one of the most popular rappers in the world right now dedicated another song to, you too would find it amusing. But hey you keep trying to flip it to whatever fan boy shit you keep making up in your head lol

Its really pathetic how much you want to be accepted and liked on this shit. I hope you aint this pathetic in real life cause that would be real sad. For the most part im sure u are a nice guy when you want to be but your obsession with this Kenny vs Drake shit or Atruhead vs Heinz/SeV is fucking weird.

Drake rules 42 percent of the 50-position Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart (dated March 7), as the hip-hop star has 21 concurrent songs on the tally -- breaking his own record for the most simultaneously charting hits in the history of the chart. (The new chart will be refreshed on Billboard's websites on Thursday, Feb. 26.)

Seven more tracks from his surprise album If You're Reading This It's Too Late debut on the newest chart, joining the 10 already-charting cuts from the set. Thus, all 17 tracks from Drake's album are charting on the tally.

Drake Becomes First Rapper to Top Artist 100

His grand total climbs to 21 charting tracks, as he's also a featured act on four additional songs.

Drake surpasses his previous record for the most concurrently-charting songs -- 14 -- which he matched a week ago (on the chart dated Feb. 25) following the debut of his album.

The new songs enter off the strength of downloads and streaming, with every track from the set logging no less than 1.8 million U.S. streams in the week ending Feb. 22, according to Nielsen Music. Of the album's tracks, "Energy" leads the pack, taking Streaming Gainer honors and increasing by 201 percent (to 4.6 million clicks), with 82 percent stemming from Spotify plays. Sales of the cut also rise (up 21 percent to 77,000 downloads), driving it 4-1 on Rap Digital Songs -- his first No. 1 as a lead act (and fourth overall) on the still-young chart.

Of his latest arrivals on the chart, "Know Yourself" earns the Hot Shot Debut at No. 23, owed in part to a 13 percent spike in downloads (to 15,000).

If You're Reading This It's Too Late remains at No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, selling 129,000 copies in its second week (down 74 percent). The momentum of the new project secures a second week atop the Billboard Artist 100, where Drake became the first rapper to earn a No. 1 spot.

Here are Drake's 21 titles on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (dated March 7, 2015):
No. 4 - "Only," Nicki Minaj, featuring Drake, Lil Wayne & Chris Brown
