12724039, "The DUFF" bothers me.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Feb-10-15 05:09 PM
I am sure there will be a hollywood feel good ending where everyone learns to not be superficial but it just seems wrong to put out into the ether the notion of "Designated Ugly Fat Friend".

Seems to me alot of girls will be walking out that movie filling like a DUFF.

Always felt bad for actors who end up always playing the "not cute" character in movies.

I guess Mae Whitman is going the Melissa McCarthy route and just embracing the ish out of being that girl.

The thing is, if they made a Lena Dunham bio movie, hollywood would cast Mae Whitman as her.

12724209, i remind myself that the actors who take those roles
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Feb-10-15 08:09 PM
are costumed and made up to appear 'ugly' usually for the first 2 acts of the movie and are often made up to appear 'beautiful' in the final act. classic 'Ugly Duckling' storyline. we all remember that story - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ugly_Duckling. i expect this DUFF movie is yet another re-telling of The Ugly Duckling w/some twist added.

and i also know that actors who play 'beauty' generally are also made up and costumed just like actors are made up to play 'ugly'.

so i don't trip.
12724334, Her "ugly" is probably cuter than alot of viewers regular
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Feb-10-15 10:57 PM
which I think will leave folks walking out feeling bad.

But yeah, it's usually easier to watch when they use extreme makeup to make the ugly character ugly.

12724790, the point of casting a 'cute' actress to play the ugly duckling
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Feb-11-15 11:33 AM
is that the whole time WE KNOW she's not ugly. it's the idiots in the movie who can't see her beauty. and then when she's revealed as a beauty in the final act the idiots in the movie finally catch up and see what we the audience saw the whole time.

this movie has been made dozens of times.

note: i'm assuming DUFF is a re-telling of the Ugly Duckling story.
12725007, The formula usually involves a nerdy uncool girl. Can't think of a movie

Not by a huge amount, but it happens often enough. I've seen a 25yo single mother singer on here get referred to as a young girl just having fun (taking selfies). A 14yo is a "young girl" in reality.
12725014, I've got t-shirts older than her.

he'd be right if the woman cast in this movie had never played a beautiful woman in some other role.

but she has.

and, again, the point with castings like this is for the audience to be able to see that the woman being called 'ugly' by the fools in the movie is NOT actually ugly b/c we can see how beautiful she is. in this movie the fools call this woman fat and ugly and we know she's neither b/c we can see her. we know their labeling of her isn't fair.

none of that matters

it might actually be worse

what matters is the effect the movie will have on the person seeing it
and no matter what people tell themselves about 'this is a movie' 'only a movie'
'its not real'
it has an effect
an effect that is multiplied by what girls are bombarded with everyday
the message of they are not good enough

hopefully hes right and the ending does the happy ending thing
odds are this movies message is really screwy

You describe what Hollywood intends to convey. I think there could be many unintended consequences of a movie like this.

But if the Mean Girls in the film think this girl is FAT. I think it might make some of the many girls bigger than this girl get an idea what the mean girls at their school must think of them.

>he'd be right if the woman cast in this movie had never

That's assuming that the viewers in question have seen the other roles. I have seen here in maybe three things and she has always played the not cute girl (Arrested Development, Scott Pilgrim & This)

Fair ain't got nothing to do with anything. The hollywood way that this chick will have to show everyone that the mean girls were being unfair to her probably won't be an option for most girls watching this movie.

Maybe frugly girls will walk away feeling better about themselves after seeing this movie. I doubt it.
