12720448, can you drive stick?
Posted by rdhull, Fri Feb-06-15 11:43 AM
not a double entendre metaphor or ref to B.I.T.H. etc but literal

I learned how to drive with a stick shift (dumb), but Im glad I did
12720451, My wife taught me shortly before my 30th birthday
Posted by John Forte, Fri Feb-06-15 11:44 AM
12720454, how long it take to learn?
Posted by rdhull, Fri Feb-06-15 11:45 AM

12720458, 30 minutes, maybe. It's really not hard
Posted by John Forte, Fri Feb-06-15 11:47 AM
In the first 3 months of driving a stick, I may have stalled twice. Never again after that.
12720463, 30 minutes? you a damn lie Forte!..then again
Posted by rdhull, Fri Feb-06-15 11:48 AM
I learned to drive period with stick, no previous experience
12720455, Yep
Posted by GNT1986, Fri Feb-06-15 11:46 AM
Bought a $500 beater and practiced in a parking lot.

12720465, did u ever take typing class?..serious question with a purpose

12720475, yup, 9th grade
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Feb-06-15 11:52 AM
what's the purpose, I'm over here like "I know this nigga ain't clowning my typing skills on a message board"

12720498, thats how I learned
Posted by rdhull, Fri Feb-06-15 11:59 AM
brother was tryna teach me and it was a semi disaster...

then as in tyoing class at night when trying to sleep my mind and hands are typing out my thoughts due to repetition of the class

then I started doing the same thing regarding hand, foot clutch organization when trying to sleep

so I decide to go out foolishly on my own on my street the next few mornings and boom...after a few tries, starts n stalls, I had it

12720466, It's fun. Like driving a race car.

12720474, It's fun with an open road in front of you.

Not so fun in stop-and-go traffic, or city streets with mad lights & stop signs.
12720484, Like driving in New Mexico. All we have is space, B.

12720736, I drove a stick in Chicago for a year. It wasn't bad.
Posted by John Forte, Fri Feb-06-15 02:19 PM
The secret is not down-shifting.
12720479, nah, too much work
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Feb-06-15 11:54 AM
I know you can save gas, switch gears faster than an automatic but every time I drive with someone with a stick it never looked fun.

12720638, Driving should be work
Posted by B9, Fri Feb-06-15 01:37 PM
12720464, Yeah. They are such a pain-in-the-ass to drive in the city.
Posted by 8-bit, Fri Feb-06-15 11:48 AM
Unfortunately, that's where I learned, and I think that put me off of driving them. All that shifting gets old fast when I have to stop at the end of every block. Glad I learned tho.
12720467, Learned on a stick shift. Drove cars with them for years
Posted by mrhood75, Fri Feb-06-15 11:49 AM
Finally gave it up when I bought my "new" car back in 2013. I spent from 2000 to like 2007 working jobs that required long commutes, often in stop and go traffic. And doing that with a stick-shift is literally an extreme pain. My left foot still hurts to this day.
12720473, getting an automatic (anything) is like heaven..but stick is kinda fun

but this tank is a beast. In the year and a half ive owned it NYC has seen some of its worst weather and Ive never once had to use a shovel. If only it were a stick...
12720489, I had to teach my wife years ago
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Fri Feb-06-15 11:56 AM
I've known how to drive a stick as long as I've been driving, but she had no clue. Taught her on my old 5 speed Escort and it took her about an hour to get it but I'm pretty sure she's forgotten how since then.

time adjusting to using one foot. I only know this because it was told to me by a driving instructor who teaches high school kids.
12720491, prefer it.
Posted by double negative, Fri Feb-06-15 11:57 AM
12720493, naw. it's REAL hard to find someone that will let me practice on their car
Posted by southphillyman, Fri Feb-06-15 11:57 AM
one coworker gave me a good hour in the parking lot but that wasn't enough

right now one of my cars is a luxury performance jawn with the auto-manual functionality and paddles
i don't consider that stick shift and i rarely use it anyway but i *kinda* get what it would be like to drive stick
12720508, I have it on my VW CC
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Feb-06-15 12:02 PM
they say you can't fuck the engine up because the car's computer won't allow it. Shit still makes me nervous. I need to find an empty lot to play with it.

12720518, the auto manual you mean?
Posted by southphillyman, Fri Feb-06-15 12:06 PM
yea i wonder if these cars are really meant for you to be manually shifting like that. a lot of times i feel like i'm holding the gears too long when i do
i mainly use mine to control when i get into 7th gear on the highway
it's basically the only way i can get more than 20mpg lol
12720554, yup, first time I tried it the engine revved up so I chilled on it.
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Feb-06-15 12:26 PM
12720494, yep, and i prefer it

12720605, Aren't manuals the standard in the UK?
Posted by 8-bit, Fri Feb-06-15 01:09 PM
Was talking to someone from there, and he mentioned that everyone drives manuals where he's from.
12720696, yeah they are but automatics are very common these days
Posted by blackrussian, Fri Feb-06-15 02:05 PM
and i do know a few people who actually learned to drive on an automatic car, as opposed to learning manual & then getting an auto.
12720501, Yep. Taught myself by watching Youtube vids
Posted by Overqualified, Fri Feb-06-15 12:00 PM
and circling the megachurch parking lot up the street. A lot of stalls out of first, but I got it fully down in about a month and change. Nothing like getting on the on ramp and popping the clutch up to 5th. I wrecked that car and the new one I bought is an auto. I miss it a lot. My left foot still wants to mash an imaginary clutch when I'm behind the wheel.
12721081, took me a long time to stop trying to downshift when I brake
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Fri Feb-06-15 06:24 PM
>My left foot still
>wants to mash an imaginary clutch when I'm behind the wheel.

I haven't owned another stick since my old escort. It took a good minute before I got used to braking without downshifting and there's still been instances where I wanna drop a gear or two to pass someone and reach out for the shifter.

that same day he gave me a few tips and had me take it for a drive.

30 minutes is real possible when youre stuck in the middle of the street trying to make a left turn and everybody both directions is honking at your ass.

You learn to figure out that clutch real quick
12720546, I can, but I have only a couple hours of experience
Posted by Wonderl33t, Fri Feb-06-15 12:23 PM
so I imagine it would be a little shaky to start but I'd be fine after a short bit.

commuted that monday, semi-freaked out. i don't think i'll go back to automatic now and will drive this thing to the ground!

12720564, Yes, but I get little practice due to my choice of vehicle
Posted by Dr Claw, Fri Feb-06-15 12:37 PM
last Volvo wagons you could easily find with 5 speeds were the 200s and early 700 series. they still make them, but US buyers never took them en masse. I'm often really shocked to see a non-R Volvo with a manual in the States.

and nowadays I'd rather have a DSG if "go faster/better fuel economy" is the order of the day. they are technically superior to manuals, but not as "fun"

from an ownership perspective I'd def. rather have a manual than these overcomplicated autos or DCTs

if I hit the lotto I'm getting a GTI, Focus ST, or a Focus RS and let that be my "Eat Da Poo Poo" ride while the Volvo is the daily driver
12720627, first time i ever tried learning stick was in my dads orange Volvo wagon
Posted by southphillyman, Fri Feb-06-15 01:27 PM
in the parking lot of a cheltenham super market lol
he told me from the gate that it was one of the hardest clutches to learn on
that didn't go so well was like another decade before i got another chance to stall somebody shit
12720569, ALL driver's education courses should use manual transmission cars.
Posted by SoWhat, Fri Feb-06-15 12:42 PM
b/c i hear it's easiest to learn to operate a manual transmission when one has little to no context for driving. it's more difficult to learn to operate a manual when you can already operate an automatic.
12720589, ^^^
Posted by Eric B Is Prez, Fri Feb-06-15 12:55 PM
Agreed. I think they do this in some European countries (and maybe elsewhere)- you have to pass your driving test in stick car.

Automatics are boring as hell. Plus, manuals accelerate faster.

Baranco Pontiac. It was my first new car, a 96 Pontiac Sunfire convertible.

I was shopping used and dude asked if I was interested in a new car. I told him that the only new car on the lot I liked, in my price range, was the ragtop Sunfire, but it was a stick...and I can't drive stick.

He literally went, "Sheeeit...we can fix that right now."
