12716985, Neil Brennan, I can see how Dave Chapelle stopped F'ing with him
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Feb-03-15 11:55 AM
I find myself listening to his podcast often because he interviews the people that I am interested in, but he has this "I'm White but I KNOW black people because I follow black pop culture and I have a few black friends" that drives me a bit crazy.

If I hear him expound on his theory one more time about how most successful black people are the ones who grew up around white people I am going to craw through my computer and choke him.

He's that kind of white guy who loves black shit because he thinks it all about "pimpin ho's and slammin cadillac doors".

There is a difference between that and white folks who are genuinely cool and not trying that hard.

Black OKP, y'all agree with me?

White OKP, do you get what I am saying?

The difference is that Neal and Dave were supposedly close friends for a long time; while Neal and Aisha are not long time friends. Dave's intelligence and them being long time friends is why I doubt he's go that route, but I get what you inferring in terms of him having that blanket feeling towards black folk in general.

The fact that Rosenberg is connected to music and not comedy keeps him a little more grounded. He's annoying but he doesn't constantly use what he thinks he knows as a platform to be pompous and paternalistic.

So nobody in this thread knows what happened between Neal and Dave or know them personally but because the black people in this thread listen to Neal's podcast and misinterpreted a theory of his, that a fellow comedian who is black Chris Rock agreed with and took the theory farther or put it in better words (that common thread among successful black people was that they know white people better than the non successful) but for some reason you are still misinterpreting the theory and feel its a sign of the root problem between Dave and Neal. IF this sounds confusing and retarded it should because thats how stupid you guys sound right now lol Speculating off of a point in his podcast that you misunderstood is retarded. Yes it is.

dawg, calm down. you aint tough and you are not intelligent in slightest about power, race, social capital, and culture in America. it's evident in your asinine, self-reflective disguised as deep and nuanced "gotta hear both sides" posting. it's embarrassing honestly.

the comment I made was based on the fact that you come of like MOST white people who get defensive about race discussions, whether they be highly political, or some pseudo clownin' / barber shop shit like this.

most folk on this board who are Black, or Black & other, have either had the white friend or been the Black around all white folk (in America), and have access to the type of relationship Neil and Dave MAY have had, and the type of person Neil reps himself to be in his comedy and podcast.

From jump, Buddy_G said it was all speculation, and you are the one who has read what Neil and Chris Rock said incorrectly.

but instead of saying, yeah my bad I was wrong, or nah I don't get this let me see it from the other side, you start with all your cocky I'm so cool and in the industry in the know steez "you're an idiot" nonsense. bruh, you have not one iota who I am.

Posted by shamus, Tue Feb-03-15 03:11 PM

12717641, I forgot about that. Ta-nahisi lost me in that debate with this:
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Feb-03-15 04:51 PM
"And I love The Wire, but blindness follows blindness. Leave aside black screenwriters like John Ridley, Barry Jenkins and Ava DuVernay—Neal Brennan does not know who the best black screenwriter is because the best black screenwriter right now is waitressing tables, counting up shit tips, thinking about her babysitting shift that night, hoping to get her car out the shop tomorrow, and storing lines of dialogue and character notes in her memory chalet. Neal Brennan can not know who "the best black" anything is, because the best black anythings are shot, jailed and destroyed at discomfiting rates. And there were so few black people in Wilmette. And these facts, and Brennan's blindness, and Brennan's declaration offered in blindness, are not wholly unconnected."

He was generally killing it and making good points in the piece this comes from but the argument above, the best black screenwriters never get the chance to write, is pretty bad. There are better arguments like "How the fuck would NB know which writers most authentically and honestly depicts Black Folks"?

But yeah, he generally nails the point that NB is guilty of being one of those white people who freely makes whatever declarations they please about worlds they knew very little about based on his limited exposure.

So interesting timing.

His set there was definitely about race a third of the time, but the "only" offensive thing he said was about growing up with his Black friends, and how they always won when it came to sad stories. "They'd be like....my dad vanished three years ago, and I haven't seen him since. And I'm like....my dad vanishes...for hours at a time..to play chess...so depressing!" or some shit. Black folks still laughed at it, since the rest of the set was all against White folks. But I can see him taking it overboard, I never listen to him so I wasn't familiar.

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Feb-04-15 11:00 AM
It's hard to be a working comedian and not be cool with him because of his place in the industry.

There is this exchange between the two I came across.

In 2010, Neal Brennan, the co-creator of Chappelle’s Show, wrote a pilot with a character inspired by Patrice—harsh and philosophical, in a warm way. Brennan phoned him and cut to the chase: “Are you going to be a dick?”

“How you going to be asking me if I’m going to be a dick?” Patrice said. Then he launched into a two-hour meditation on his philosophy of being a dick. “Neal,” Patrice said finally, “I can’t promise you that I won’t be a dick.”

I would have loved to hear that 2 hour lecture from Patrice O'Neal to Neal Brennan.

Both provide amazing platforms for black artists we likely wouldn't hear from otherwise.
(As the op alludes to)

Both are far from perfect but neither is the enemy they are often made out to be.

I like being able to hear Vic Mensa and Joey on Hot 97.

I like hearing in depth interviews with folks like Robert Townsend and Hannibal.

This post paints Neal as some out of touch asshole, but none of his black comedian friends have called him on it? Hmmmmm

The Champs is a fantastic podcast. Neal is an asshole but he is incredibly racially aware.

There's always Gary Owen...

12718120, ^And this is why people will forever be giving them passes.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Feb-04-15 11:05 AM
They are gatekeepers that Black Artist "need" to help their careers and get the platforms that they otherwise might not have access to.

Being in that position makes them annoying and has them thinking that they are down and "know" and "understand" black people. But to me their understanding can be pretty superficial "pimpin hoes and slammin cadillac doors"

But no need to get so defensive for those dudes. No one said they were the enemy. I described it as an annoyance.

I still listen to the podcasts so it can't be that terrible.
