12716431, How is Jimmy Fallon not the GOAT?
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Mon Feb-02-15 07:05 PM
Might be too early to anoint him, but he is definitely on the GOAT trajectory

What other Late Night host could fit something like this on their show?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvRypx1lbR4

It's mostly the guests who provide the real laughs, but he (his personality) and his show facilitates it all.
His skits are usually funny. He gets his guests to participate in goofy, funny stuff.
Even his interviews aren't too bad (Craig Ferguson is the best at this part)

12716432, Has the broadest appeal which is why he is gonna be the GOAT
Posted by Heinz, Mon Feb-02-15 07:07 PM
both young and old love him.

his interviews are garbage.

>his interviews are garbage.
12716583, he doesnt stop talking
Posted by RobOne4, Tue Feb-03-15 12:16 AM
he talks to much and he sits there acting like a fan boy. Most of his big name interviews are only 1 segment now because he plays games. So its really abbreviated especially because you have to fit in whatever they are plugging. He had Denzel on a couple of months ago. Seriously Jimmy told a fucking story that took up half the interview. Then they plugged his movie. Then commercial and a game. You have Denzel on and he talked for maybe 1 minute. Dont let him get a friend on the show like Drew Barrymore, Tina Fey, or someone else from SNL. Half the interview is inside jokes.
12717943, Couldn't agree more.
Posted by Airbreed, Wed Feb-04-15 09:23 AM
That's my major issue with him. He never knows how to let his guests be a guest. Fallon needs to stop making his interviews about himself.
12716446, Doesn't matter. Nobody watches these shows for interviews anymore.
Posted by Ryan M, Mon Feb-02-15 07:23 PM
In the podcast era, old canned interview bytes are irrelevant.

Jimmy is killing it in what's relevant NOW - which is segments that are fun for a really broad audience and can be consumed as individual segments rather than a full show. It's kind of what talk shows are going to these days.
12716871, yep
Posted by lfresh, Tue Feb-03-15 11:06 AM
its why the talk show format is dying

and shit, tv personalities don't even have stats like sports figures to keep their legacy going.
the generation who grew up on fallon and says 'who?' when you mention carson is closer than you realize.
carson was great, sure.
but when folks talk like that - you just sound old, man.
12717657, Nope I disagree
Posted by ThaAnthology, Tue Feb-03-15 05:12 PM
Greatest of All time should not be just dooled out every generation. There are the "best that ever did it" for a reason. For reasons stated in this post, can't even compare what Johnny did or Ed Sullivan in relation to today's or even the next generation.

The situations were not the same. So they cannot be compared. To say every GOAT gets dethroned... I don't buy it.

Who will replace Michael J? Prince? Impossible so folk should just appreicate the greats they have and stop trying to make one better than the other or try to diminish or tarnish a predecessors legacy.

i've tried, but i find him unwatchable. all his viral videos and gimmicks don't interest me whatsoever. i find his charm repulsive. i'm sure he really is as extremely nice as he portrays himself to be, and i'm happy for the roots and everyone who likes fallon, but i doubt i'll ever be a fan and really wonder how long lasting his appeal will be as he and the show age.
12716922, I can't understand half the shit he is saying

>it's not for me but I see why people like his show. The skits

i almost said yesterday that i don't get it, but i caught myself because i do get it, it's just really not for me. i like comedy that skewers pop culture with at least a bit of an edge and outside perspective, but this goofball totally embraces pop culture. i don't think pop culture sucks, but a lot of it does, and simply bringing up or imitating it just isn't inherently funny to me. some kind of original, witty, intelligent commentary on it through humor is.

12719719, 1) Im not mad at The Roots or Jimmy Fallon
Posted by atruhead, Thu Feb-05-15 02:53 PM
the post asked how Jimmy Fallon isn't the GOAT. I made a snide remark. it's not the end of the world

>But you're criticizing grown men for how they feed their
>families?

2) Nowhere did I imply that The Roots shouldn't feed their families or earn a living on TV. I dont have to enjoy it though (and I dont so I never tune in)

to be 100% clear (not that you're owed any sort of explanation), I was cool with the roots being the backup band for Fallon's performing artists and playing the walk on music. When they started getting involved in comedic sketches that didn't amuse me, that's where I stopped being so cool with it

Do I think The Roots are actual minstrels? Not really. but it got my point across in a way that compelled people to reply

there's also the whole "The drummer can go by his stage name, but the rapper has to go by Tariq because his stage name is too scary" thing that doesn't sit quite well with me. but I'm sure you'll find a way to defend that as well
12719881, Man listen to young black kids talk about Quest and the Roots.
Posted by Triptych, Thu Feb-05-15 04:10 PM
He's universally hailed as a genius amongst the smarty artsy 20-something black set aka US 10 years ago. They are EXPANDING blackness not restricting it, and that's been true their entire career.

They're pioneers. They have some arrows in their back accordingly. You don't want to be the one slinging insults though man trust me. Bad for the black soul.

Posted by fontgangsta, Mon Feb-02-15 08:51 PM
OKP has a lot of irrational hate for J.Fal
Maybe its because he stole their little rap group and put them on national TV every night, so it doesnt seem as "cool" to be down with the roots now. Who knows.

Its far to early to call him the GOAT - but i could see him attaining this EASILY.
He has the boyish charm of Carson.
He's got jokes like Leno.
His humor isn't mean-spirited like Kimmel.
He feels far more genuine and relatable than Conan.
He brings in the left-field antics of Letterman.
He does SNL style sketches.
He can sing, dance, AND play instruments.
And at the end of the day, he's just the most FUN host thats ever been on late night TV.

The only thing i could see bringing him down over time is the drank. That boy reeeaallly likes to drink. I hope it doesn't become a problem for him.
12719381, Yep, to all of this. Complete cosign.

12716551, Did people really think that?
Posted by Ryan M, Mon Feb-02-15 11:27 PM
I mean I didnt like him initally, but I never thought he'd be cancelled. Far too high profile in far too safe a place. It took Conan years to get going and he was a nobody when he was hired. Once Fallon's show really got going, he was unstoppable and EASILY a better choice for the Tonight Show than Conan ever was.

I loved what The Roots did from the gate but the best thing this show did was create segments that could go viral with celebrities having fun rather than focusing on interviews. He's a very likable dude, but was never good at interviews and sometimes those segments were painful in the beginning, but I don't remember people saying he was going to get cancelled.

But yeah, I'll take my L on him. He really found his way.
12716589, no I made it up.
Posted by SeV, Tue Feb-03-15 12:38 AM
yes folk were saying that

their was a poll on here askin how long the show would last when he 1st got the gig

and I still don't get the criticism on his interview style

he interviews in a very relaxed/casual/natural conversational type way and celebs really let their guard down when they're on his show and be themselves

but im banned tho.

Posted by RobOne4, Tue Feb-03-15 01:45 AM
as much as I dont like him. A lot is probably carry over from SNL. But he has universal appeal and it was obvious from the get go. Conan always appealed to the 25 and under crowd. Everyone loves Jimmy. There was a lot of criticism during that first year. It was rough as hell. At time The Roots were the only reason I watched. But I never thought he would be cancelled. Nor did I hear any talk from anyone saying he would be cancelled either. To be fair though he definitely was going to benefit from the previous scandal and get all the time in the world to work out the kinks if he needed too. No way was NBC going to give up on another Tonight Show host that fast again. But he came around and found his lane.
12716876, definitely carry over

12716624, RE: How is Jimmy Fallon not the GOAT?
Posted by Marz, Tue Feb-03-15 02:28 AM
Letterman's projects to be better at this point for two reasons:

1) David Letterman actually interviews his guests. He's not scared to ask a tough question, and when he does, he usually does so in a hilarious manner.

2) Letterman makes his audience feel like he and they are in on a joke, sometimes at the expense of the guest. That is an awesome ability that I do not think Fallon will ever develop. Fallon is in on the joke with the guest, and sometimes so at the audience's expense.

The Joaquin Phoenix or Paris Hilton Letterman interviews are both good examples. They both seemed so uncomfortable but it was so hilarious.
12716643, Well....
Posted by neuro_OSX, Tue Feb-03-15 04:49 AM
Its fair to say Fallon is redefining what it means to be a late night talk show host. His appreciation of music makes him unique among his late night predecessors.

The Roots as his band is icing on the cake, they bring next level music cred and skill, arguably the best pairing of talk show host and late night band, period!

His interview style fits his personality, hard hitting questions wouldn't fit the current tone of his show, he is about having fun and being an entertainer, thats more than enough. Let these dudes marinate, they ain't even started simmering yet.

12716875, Fallon good. Letterman GOAT.

12718996, Who gives a fuck. The entire format is garbage.
Posted by Cold Truth, Thu Feb-05-15 01:05 AM
Guess I'll be the one to say it: None of this shit is any good. It's It's all desperate, lowest common denominator pandering and at the end of the day you either like the personality of the guy doing the pandering or you don't. Every joke, every sketch, every 'man on the street' bit, every moment of crowd interaction is essentially that guy grabbing you by the shoulders and screaming "DO YOU LIKE ME? PLEASE TELL ME YOU LIKE ME!!!!".

Seriously, who the fuck still watches this shit? The whole format is dated and corny as fuck. It's terrible. It's a half step above morning drive time radio.

Sorry old timers, Carson is dated as all hell. That shit did not age well. Leno is perhaps the worst of the bunch, like a golden retriever dying for a milk bone.

That isn't to say there aren't genuinely funny moments to be had, but anyone pretending these hosts aren't completely interchangeable is lying to themselves. I'd say the one guy to really distinguish himself is Conan, but the truth is I just like his personality more.
12719290, this i agree with
Posted by lfresh, Thu Feb-05-15 10:51 AM
yep down to conan

its not even that i like jimmy more
its that jimmy doesn't make it about him
and he really does seem to know what i find entertaining
we both seem to agree its not jimmy neccessarily
lol

He's corny af to me, I can't even watch a whole episode.

if I do see a clip that is remotely funny, it's only funny because of the guests and despite him. Like the lip synching thing with him, Ferrell and Kevin Hart; it could have ended with Will doing Drunk In Love. Kevin Hart was ok, but Jimmy should have been cut out entirely. And that goes for anything he's a part of.

I respected Jay as a comedian before becoming a host, but never really cared for anyone on the Tonight Show because it's so watered down. I always thought Conan and Letterman were legitimately, off the cuff funny, so the guests didn't matter as much. Fallon doesn't appeal to me at all and never has.
12719370, IMO, he's not funny and can't interview
Posted by stattic, Thu Feb-05-15 11:38 AM

The positive parts of the show are provided by others, and that alone prevents him from even sniffing Carson.
12719438, There it is
Posted by nipsey, Thu Feb-05-15 12:11 PM
The enjoyable parts of the show aren't provided by him. The Roots and the games. He isn't funny and his interviews are cringe-worthy. I know the interviews generally are pretty lame, but his are unwatchable. He just sits up there and giggles like an anime school girl and tells the guest how much he loves them. He gleans nothing of interest from the interviews.

12719673, He was also really bad on SNL and his movies suck

12719426, he's about our age so we can relate to him
Posted by jrocc, Thu Feb-05-15 12:04 PM
most of us didn't relate to Carson, Leno or Letterman because they were the old dudes who's jokes we didn't always get.

Conan bridged the gap by being a little younger and off the wall and different enough than his predecessors and it helped that he wrote for The Simpsons and SNL. he's actually very funny.

Jimmy though is "our" guy. i mean come on, he grew up on Save By The Bell and hip-hop. and he also changed the game by having such an online presence even before when he was doing Late Night.
12719670, My personal favorite is (OG) Arsenio

12721019, He's an entertainer not a comedian....
Posted by handle, Fri Feb-06-15 04:57 PM
That's why there's a disconnect.

In "modern times" the entertainer talk show host has kind of disappeared and has been replaced with a comedian.

And as comedy switched from "entertainment" to "observation stand up" many of us want to latch on to the hosts specific point of view.

Jimmy's point of view is not as pointed or cynical as Letterman, Leno, Kimmel, Conan, Arsenio, etc. I mean Ellen's got more "teeth."

He's more a Joey Bishop, or John Davidson, but funnier.

And my 50 year old neighbor and 65 year mother and their friends love him. And the 20 year old college students do too.

He's good at that demographic: mass appeal. But he's not lowest common denominator - let's be thankful for that.

12721087, He's a once in a generation talent. Tonight show is perfect for him.

It's not the same show though, so comparisons are a little silly. Carson wasn't 1/8th the improv actor Fallon is. Fallon can throw in **perfect** impressions of world leaders at the drop of a hat. It's amazing. The show also now has the best musical director in it's history..
