12715830, SONIC
Posted by John Forte, Mon Feb-02-15 12:20 PM
Sonic runs ads in markets where the closest Sonic is 100 miles away.
12715835, ^ all of that is good advertising. LOL
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Feb-02-15 12:24 PM
Sonic and others understand that we travel to places that have Sonic even if we live in a place that doesn't have it. and when we travel having seen all of those ads we're curious. so we're more likely to check them out than if we'd never seen those ads. plus they also are on an expansion plan and so when they expand into a market where they'd been airing commercials (like here in Chicago) the ppl are primed and ready already.

i read about this w/Sonic and i think it's genius.

http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2008/10/good-question-why-does-sonic-advertise-on-tv-when-theres-no-sonic-near-me.html

http://jalopnik.com/322884/sonic-drive-ins-slowly-creeping-northward

^ and that last link is from 2007. i'm sure there are more locations up north now than there were then. there are several more in Chicago and STL now than then.
12715966, They have them in NJ, but I never went to one til Houston

12715775, A lot of fundamental differences have eroded
Posted by John Forte, Mon Feb-02-15 11:36 AM
What remains is:

-The power that religion holds in the South

-Right to work vs union (but that's fading)

-Northern cities have more political pull than Southern cities. Almost all big cities are BLUE, and rural areas are red, but the cities can carry the state in the North.
12715782, i'm not sure that religious power is particularly southern either.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Feb-02-15 11:39 AM
but i'm in Chicago where the installment of the latest archbishop of the Chicago diocese was front page news. for several days.

i never see that kind of coverage down south. but i know i'd see it in Boston and probably NYC. and possibly Los Angeles.

and then there's Utah and the Mormons. and that Mormon muscle isn't unique to that state either - ask the Mormons in Cali. plus the Scientologists in Cali 'run' the entertainment biz. or is that Jewish ppl?

12715788, With the exception of Utah, I'm not sure religion affects policy as much
Posted by John Forte, Mon Feb-02-15 11:41 AM
outside of the South. Dumb shit like prayer in school and teaching Creationsism. Gospel on the radio. Just church culture, in general.
12715792, Oklahoma's 10 Commandments monument though...

12715794, arguably the South though. I will admit that the Midwest muddles things
Posted by John Forte, Mon Feb-02-15 11:47 AM
If we're strictly discussing North v South as the post title suggests, there's a big difference in the role religion plays in the culture.
12715798, i think the difference is overstated.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Feb-02-15 11:50 AM
and it's more about metro vs. rural than North vs. South.

Posted by SoWhat, Mon Feb-02-15 11:58 AM
again - i think the difference is overstated. mostly by cynical ppl from East and West Coasts.
12715809, true. they just call it the bible belt to get on your nerves.

Posted by SoWhat, Mon Feb-02-15 12:03 PM
12715911, I think it's overstated too. In rural areas they are all about it
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Feb-02-15 01:14 PM
everyone always acts like you will get hit over the head with a bible as soon as you head down south but that isn't the case.

I've been down south and the only time I got hounded about church is inside of a church.

12715915, Atlanta is the single most Jesus-y place I've ever been
Posted by John Forte, Mon Feb-02-15 01:18 PM
The city of Atlanta, not some area way the fuck outside of the perimeter.
12715940, i've been there and not felt the Jesus.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Feb-02-15 01:32 PM
ATL didn't feel any more Jesus-y to me than other similarly-sized major metro areas i've visited.

and i've been there w/family who's deep into Jesus. like my family in STL. and Milwaukee. and Cleveland. and Chicago.

12715949, no.... not at all.
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Feb-02-15 01:35 PM
12715777, sweet tea.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Feb-02-15 11:36 AM
in the south servers ask me if i want sweetened or unsweetened tea.

in the north there is no sweet tea option - iced tea only comes unsweetened.

12715805, attitude...the south generally has a warmer friendlier feel...
Posted by mikediggz, Mon Feb-02-15 11:57 AM
people smile at you and or say hi when they pass u on the street... up north there is no connection between ppl (in my experience) which isn't necessarily a bad thg...but everybody seems to be on their own mission and there is no concern or even acknowledgement at times for the next man. I was in philly over the holiday and everytime im up north I bug out alil bit when I notice
12715900, Philly is worse than NYC in this department.
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Feb-02-15 01:10 PM
I lived in Philly for 5 years and my wife was always terrified of going to NYC. When we finally went she was amazed how much friendlier people where in NYC than Philly.

I kept telling her it's because in NYC people actually have shit to do...

In Philly, it always felt like people ain't really have shit to do so they had time to argue over simple shit.
12715905, NYers are FARRRRRR freindlier than their reputation
Posted by John Forte, Mon Feb-02-15 01:11 PM
Bostonians, on the other hand pride themselves on being assholes.
12715967, man while i was up there i caught up with some of my okp fam
Posted by mikediggz, Mon Feb-02-15 01:47 PM
from NC...he been livin there maybe 7 years or so and we were both trippin out on how there can be a street or a room full of ppl and nobody is in anyway connected at all. I was at terminal market and that shit was jam packed but I might as well been the only nigga in that mofo lol. its like other ppl don't exist

12715822, White Castle vs. Krystal
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Feb-02-15 12:09 PM
Krystal's buns are too thick. and their menu is more extensive - they even offer lettuce and tomato!

but WC now has veggie burgers.

12715844, WC could sell unicorn sliders, they'd still cause trenchant muddbutt
Posted by Mongo, Mon Feb-02-15 12:30 PM
12715853, not if i get 'em w/o onions.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Feb-02-15 12:34 PM
which they will do.

i gotta try that veggie burger.

Definitely nicer dispositions. More smiles, less frowns. Every southern woman that I've dated has also cooked for me.

It should be noted I'm talking about southern women that have moved up north. I have no experience living down south.
12717060, I like Northern women way better.

12715874, grits vs. oatmeal
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Feb-02-15 12:53 PM
they have more than a dozen varieties of oatmeal in northern supermarkets but only 2 options for grits. down south i see somewhere around a dozen varieties of grits and not as many oatmeal options as i see up north.

also - most restaurants up here don't serve grits. those that do tend to offer Southern or Soul Food cuisine, generally. but i won't see grits at a regular ol' American diner. down south i see grits on menus more often.
12717063, agriculture, duh.
