I appreciate your story-telling ability.

There's a good dynamic between you two. The best moment of the podcast was where he said he thinks you cuss too much, and that's your hook. It's a moment of interplay that gave a spark to the discussion and illustrates the sort of significant differences needed for a show like this to work. It does, kind of go off the rails on the war cry bit but that's a minor critique.

It will be interesting to see where you guys go topically from here. Solid first outing.

I wish it was a bit longer, to be honest.
would have loved to hear the other angles of race/culture that you might have explored. as someone else mentioned earlier, you guys have the right voices for a podcast. you sound comfortable, and there seems to be good chemistry/balance between the two of you. are you planning to drop every Monday, or was this just a test?

and yes. this was sort of a test.

we didn't want listeners to have to commit too much time for the first episode.

to be honest, i used to hate podcasts (only recently have I thought that they're not all THAT bad), and the length of an episode (30+ mins) was one of my major gripes about a lot of them.

im realizing that more and more. our equipment isn't trash, but some volume is getting lost during conversions from the DAW. we should be using monitors, there's an echo and some more shit. we'll fix this next week.

i like the vlog idea. but i don't trust anyone (besides myself, of course) with good video camera work, yet. i can't do both. and i don't want a still camera in a room, or do i?

that shit was his idea (show title was his idea, too) i loved it. we went back and forth about having 'screams' to 'gasps' to what you hear now.

understood. that cutaway/dead space between the two parts is scheduled to have an actual 'radio' spot/official intro to the show. we (i) didn't want to spend the time making one if this was a flop. and i didn't want it to make or break the show.

I want to preface my comments by saying that my wife and I recently started doing our own podcast. We have five episodes up so far and it is definitely a work in process for us. We're kinda making it up as we go along trying to make tweaks each time to improve the listening experience. As we are always looking for suggestions and comments, I wanted to make sure to give you some feedback.


1) The audio comes through as clear to me. But for some reason, your friend's audio only comes through in the RIGHT speaker. I'm listening with headphones and there is no audio when he speaks in the left ear. Sound quality is something we need to work on in our podcasts. I know how important it can be. We have a one bedroom apartment and no place to record other than our open concept kitchen. So you can hear the refrigerator cycling on and off in the background. Not ideal so I'm trying to find ways to make our sound better.

2) As someone mentioned above, if you're doing multiple topics in a podcast, then I would suggest having clearer transitions between topics.

3) Also, I can't remember if you gave an introduction to your podcast. But I think you should make sure you do that. Introduce the podcast, you and your host and perhaps the topics you plan to discuss.

My wife and I started a podcast a couple of months back. We just muse on all kinds of random topics. It is definitely a work in process for us. The first one we did isn't very good, but we slowly get better IMO. We are always open to comments and suggestions. So if anyone cares to check it out, the links are below. and you have to bear with me, because im not even a podcast fan, but the more im familiarizing myself, the more i find to appreciate and forgive.

everyone says sound quality is important, so im curious about your set-up.

we want to get to a radio broadcast quality of sound, so we have dedicated hardware - xlr mics, audio interface etc.

are you all using usb mics? i can tell there's a lot of compression in your audio. sounds like a skype session almost.

also, i can tell you all dont do too much editing. i think there's value in removing some uhhhs and aaahs. im not sure how valuable it is, really.

do you all give yourselves a time limit? what's the motivation for going an hour plus?

also, i find it funny with the 'family' approach to podcasts.

wholesome podcasts with husband and wife runs the risk of sounding corny. i don't think you all are corny, but im curious about the motivation for husband and wife team? will you talk about your marriage? sleeping in separate rooms? inlaws?

why not just a man and a woman who are co hosts, who happen to be married.

We use the Yeti Blue microphone and record using Garageband. I am a complete novice to podcasting and sound engineering, so I'm not sure what is the best settings to use for my microphone. We use the "cardioid" setting on the microphone and I use the "podcasting" setting on garageband.

Our apartment is "open" concept and we record at our dining table. So you can hear the the refrigerator cycling on and off. That's pretty much going to be the case until we're able to move to a larger apartment.

I purposely decided not to edit. Two reasons: 1) I'm lazy and don't really want to spend the time going through and editing every mess up. I'd rather get the podcast out there and 2) I want the podcast to sound like a free flowing conversation.

The goal was initially to do between 45 minutes and 1 hour. Sometimes we go over the hour but only by a few minutes. The reason we go over is really just us getting caught up in the conversation and wanting to ensure we hit all the topics we planned to talk about.

I hear what you're saying. There was no real motivation other than letting people know we were a husband and wife. We don't have any plans to talk about topics specific to marriage. I'd rather not do that personally.

Thanks again for the feedback. It's still a work in progress. Especially with me learning the ins and outs of garageband and manipulating the sound settings. We're going to keep working to make a higher quality podcast.
