12715210, old school Unpopular Music Opinions
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Sun Feb-01-15 12:36 AM
what are some unpopular music opinions you got on old school acts or acts you consider old school.

you know i feel the rolling stones are way overrated.

the Beatles could write and i give them that, however everything else was madd average.

Bob Dylan couldn't sing and sounds constipated.

Prince can't sing or dance and got a pass for alot of overratd material

James Brown never made a great studio album to match his live sets.

tom petty made the same song 90 different ways and got the nerve to sue sam smith over stay with me??

Lenny Hackvitz how he gets over is beyond me.

I dug Kool and the Gang before they added JT as lead vocalist. Their "Light of the worlds" album which contains the classic "Summer madness" is fierce.
12715297, Led Zeppelin is boringly grandiose entry-level rock music

12715302, EPMD and ATCQ >>>> Run DMC
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Sun Feb-01-15 01:41 PM
Truthfully, LL Cool J ended it with Jack The Ripper, not Momma Said Knock You Out. Everything past Jack The Ripper was beating a dead horse for spins.

MC Hammer wasn't really that bad as an MC at first and could probably devastate 98% of the rappers on the charts right now in a true freestyle battle.

... So could Vanilla Ice.

MC Ren was NWA's best MC (Not counting The DOC 'cause wasn't a proper member of NWA)

Tribe made music that was more "fun" and appealed to the ladies more, but they never pulled me in like De LA did
12715327, add De La to my list of >>> Run DMC
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Sun Feb-01-15 02:59 PM
so EPMD, ATCQ, and Del La Soul >>>>> Run DMC when it comes to two MC/one DJ groups.

...i can appreciate old school hip hop but anything dating before roughly around '87 i just can't listen to it in earnest.

I have two periods in hip hop in my book: Before Rakim and After Rakim. I can listen to BR stuff once in a while, and it's typically limited to the more electro-infused stuff like Siberian Nights, Push The Button, Boogie Down Bronx, and Reckless.

overrate is a great word to describe them

>the Beatles could write and i give them that, however everything else was madd average.
this is totally clear - how many covers are out there that SMASH beatles originals? a really abnormal amount considering that covers so rarely do that.

>Bob Dylan couldn't sing and sounds constipated.
all. day. long.
shit is borderline ear violence to me.

>nerve to sue sam smith over stay with me??
in fairness, he never sued. i think petty's people were like, "hey, really?" and smith's people were like, "oh shit, youre right! heres some money"

>Lenny Hackvitz how he gets over is beyond me.
ill admit hes probly the least-consistent artist who's GOOD stuff hits me the hardest - to the point that ill always give him a pass because his work that i DO love, i cant picture my life without.

12715382, I don't get Wutang Clan
Posted by neuro_OSX, Sun Feb-01-15 07:01 PM
Perhaps its a contextual thing, if you heard it back in the day when it came out, sorta like growing up eating chitlins vs. trying to eat them as an adult. I grew up listening to lots hiphop in my teen years I bought that first RUNDMC album when it came out, first Eric B and Rakim LP, Jazzy J's "Its yours", Grandmaster Flash, etc, etc

but Wutang is a group that I never found interesting.

I tried to listen to them today and it doesn't hit me at all..

Or is it more of what they represented than what they actually sounded like ? I don't know.

They were trying to front on JB's ballads in the Lesson some time ago.
The Brother definitely knew how to sing a ballad.

If it wasn't so far back, I would. I tried to find it.
I just remember it was back when BBlock was posting regularly.
He made the post and was saying James couldn't sing because he had a "scratchy" voice.
Most of the post was in agreement. This place sometimes, man.
12716638, JB sangrapped those late 60s/early 70s songs on purpose

12715724, i borderline hated 3rd Bass
Posted by Calico, Mon Feb-02-15 10:59 AM
....i thought they were seriously wack dudes with catchy songs dissing more popular acts

Run DMC was overrated

nobody was effing with Anita Baker in the 80's-mid 90's she was killing Whitney. Janet, Chaka, Patti, etc..... they all had dem HITS, but Anita was clearly turning in better overall ALBUMS

without folks like Teddy Riley and Babyface, R&B woulda probably died out in the 90's

SWV is better than EnVogue and TLC...yeah, yeah, i know, but they had more jams and albums...

for all their talent, EnVogue was kinda wack....
12715744, Really never got the Billie Holiday love.....
Posted by WarriorPoet415, Mon Feb-02-15 11:19 AM
Not into her voice and don't really get the "great vocalist" love.

12715885, luther vandross can sing but his music is 'meh' to me.

12716622, For me it was about the early Vandross albums
Posted by neuro_OSX, Tue Feb-03-15 02:06 AM
I always dug early Luther, back when Marcus Miller was arranging some of his music and playing bass. The albums " Forever, For Always, For Love" and his debut "Never Too Much" are the stand outs for me.
12715893, Jodeci sux.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Feb-02-15 01:07 PM
always did too.

ppl geeked off half an album from like 1990 - b/c even Jodeci fans know that Forever My Lady album wasn't shit on side 2.

nope. i'm not down and never was except for a song here and there like 'Come and Talk To Me'. overall? hellz no.
12715924, MOST 90s R&B sucks

in the universe of 90s R&B i enjoy (and there is plenty) there is not much Jodeci. b/c Jodeci sux.

Like a grown man singing with children. That being said, Heartbreak is still one of my favorite group albums of the last few decades.
12716461, Also: David Ruffin sounded out of place in The Temptations

But I think as a unit tribe is dope
12715944, i wouldn't say most 90s r&b sucked however
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Mon Feb-02-15 01:34 PM
the 90s was when r&b started going down the shitter particularly where lyrics are concerned.
we over looked a lot of it bc singers still SANG back in them days but it was the beginning
of the end mainstream r&b

Posted by atruhead, Mon Feb-02-15 01:42 PM
melodically speaking, I like a vast majority of what I've heard, and it's undeniable

but Im just not a part of the cult like my mom and uncles are

Im a huge Stevie Wonder fan and his time was before Prince, but I get his genius and fandom much more

Im not shitting on Prince at all, but I dont relate to the frenzy

but i dont fk with him at all musically
