Justin Bieber releases apology video: I'm 'not who I was pretending to be'

Justin Bieber released a video Wednesday night via Facebook, apologizing for his "arrogant" behavior during the last year and a half.

"Just being young and growing up in this business is hard," the pop star said. "I really want people to know how much I care about people."

He said his behavior was largely an act to cover up his feelings: "When I say pretending, often we pretend to be something we’re not as a cover-up of what we’re truly feeling inside... And there was a lot of feelings going on in there. Just being young and growing up in this business is hard. Just growing up in general is hard."

The full, dimly-lit video runs about one minute, 40 seconds. A heads up to young Bieber fans out there: His language gets a bit graphic at times.

The singer filmed the video after appearing on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," which the singer said he was nervous about. “I was really nervous. And I think I was nervous because I’m just, I was afraid of what people are thinking about me right now,” Bieber said on Facebook.

On "Ellen," the singer brought DeGeneres flowers and Calvin Klein underwear for her birthday, and discussed his recent decision to be the subject of a Comedy Central roast.

"I think it's cool to be able to laugh at yourself," he said. "I just want to own up to some of the things ."

the phrase "thug life" makes it weird because whatever thug life is it surely isn't how that kid was/is living his life.

he was going at paparazzi and was having altercations with a neighbor while his friend had some kind of drug in Beib's mansion.
12713717, I think Tupac might differ with him on the meaning
Posted by Atillah Moor, Fri Jan-30-15 09:59 AM
Maybe it's semantics, but nothing about Beiber's lifestyle says thug. To me it just says over-privileged brat.
12713727, Not every body acting thuggish is going to be a carbon copy of Pac
Posted by c71, Fri Jan-30-15 10:02 AM
...but if a person keeps going to court over altercations....uh...that's something
12713747, True so was Paris Hilton living the thug life?

12713751, who did she have altercations with?

acting like a mature adult?

12713809, To me it seems to carry a bit more weight than just being a brat
Posted by Atillah Moor, Fri Jan-30-15 10:41 AM
IMO "Thug Life" would be Sid Vicious, Big L, Suge Knight, Ben Rothl-whatever, Mickey Fucking Rourke, etc. Hell-- you could even add Sean Penn to that list.

Some kid softer than baby thighs-- not so sure.
12713828, He's respectfully referring to Pac's redefining...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=128ao5Xl_VY#t=3m34s

"When I'm saying "thug", I mean not criminal or someone that beat you over the head.
I mean the underdog. The person that had nothing and succeeds, he's a thug, because
he overcame all obstacles. It doesn't have anything to do with the dictionary's version
of thug. To me, "thug" is my pride. Not being someone that goes against the law,
someone that takes, but being someone that has nothing, but even though I have nothing
and there's no home for me to go to, my head is up high. My chest is out. I walk tall.
I talk loud. I being strong."
12713871, I respect Pac's work and most of his message
Posted by Atillah Moor, Fri Jan-30-15 11:10 AM
But he (Pac) doesn't get to redefine the meaning or origin of the word. It has way too much history rooted in pretty much all the things we associate with thuggish behavior.

He was at point in his life the definition of such and that's ok. He also grew and learned from that behavior but the nature of that behavior is still what it has always been-- it can't really be redefined as something relatively benign.

I guess what I'm saying is Bieber may have at times acted thug-like but never led a thug life.
12713981, Ok well I'M referring to that then...
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Fri Jan-30-15 11:47 AM
especially when they insist on calling us "thugs" when they really mean to call us "niggers"
when we don't cow tow to white supremacy and their idea of how we should conduct
ourselves (such as Richard Sherman or Marshawn Lynch).
I'm with Pac. If they insist on calling us that, then we're changing the definition.
Let them keep finding new words to express their racism.
Bieber was being IRRESPONSIBLE. He's not a thug, never acted LIKE a thug.
He is and acted like an irresponsible spoiled rich white kid.
12713998, so
Posted by lfresh, Fri Jan-30-15 11:54 AM
being a thug is responsible?

rich white kid aside

when did we turn thug into a positive word somewhere
and suddenly refuse to attribute what is a negative word
to this kid?

am i lost in here?

Under my boot, preferably

>when did we turn thug into a positive word somewhere

I'm not sure what year Pac said that, but whenever that was. Cemented for me when
white supremacists insist on calling us "thugs" for the very same characteristics
that get white guys called "awesome" or "asshole".

>and suddenly refuse to attribute what is a negative word
>to this kid?

Call him any negative word. "Thug life" definitely isn't the term to associate with him.
And (this is probably my most important point here) as long as EYE get called "thug" for being outspoken,
he doesn't get to be a "thug" for actually breaking the law.
It's not ME who changed the meaning. White folks did that.

>am i lost in here?

A little, but not that lost.

12714406, yeah i'm still feeling lost

this thug thing as a media consistent microagression popped up recently for me in the past ten years

i feel like folks were more direct in the 90s
just just said black (in a not nice way)
i figured something happened we noticed um...they way yall say it
yal racist
they searched around
and started using thug incessantly...but yes like terrorist
pretty targeted and deliberately

i kinda get it
in other words if he "cleans up his act"
yet still pulls some bullshit
i'd rather we stay consistent and call him a thug

to me the police act like thugs
wall street dudes also act like thugs

i guess i see what you are saying if what you are saying that they are only calling him a thug because he is "acting black"

then yeah
nah

hes a thug because hes a dumbass
wearing docksiders and a polo shirt tucked in makes him no less thugish

"As long as EYE get called "thug" for being outspoken,
he doesn't get to be a "thug" for actually breaking the law.
It's not ME who changed the meaning. White folks did that."

There are two meanings of "thug" being used here:

1) The dictionary definition that Bieber fits... violent, law breaker, criminal
2)Black and outspoken

As long white folks are using #2 like that, then #1 is invalid.
You can't call me a criminal and law-breaker for being outspoken.
I refuse to allow that, and have no problem reminding them of this every time they use the dictionary definition.
As soon as they insist that the label fits US for being outspoken, they have changed the meaning.
If they aren't trying to change the meaning, they need to figure out how to speak English.
12713725, can apologizing make you a different person?

i realize he's implying "i don't wanna be black no mo!"
he hasn't had a hit record in 3 years.
but apologizing can't make you a different person and the person in that video is the most hated celebrity in america.
12713756, too late Beibs.. they hate you.
