Pretty freeing to grow out the face fuzz and not have to care about shaving every week. Only have to worry about brushing out the natty hair on a daily basis.
12712857, ^^ Same here
Posted by BlassFemur, Thu Jan-29-15 01:28 PM
When I did, I'd just use regular shaving cream and a razor. Nothing special.

I rarely got bumps.

Wife got a set for me when we got married. Love that stuff.

Tried the shea butter cream. Not bad. Clogs the razor a bit, but nothing too serious. May give that some more spin

As for razors, I'd been using all manner of Gillette for close to 2 decades until that Fusion dropped and the Mach 3 was being forced out. I gave DSC a whirl and haven't been disappointed, and my wallet is much happier too. If you don't feel like signing up, but want to give them a one shot try, head on to Amazon and search for Dorco razors (I think you can buy straight from Dorco as well). As it stands now I've got a stockpile of razors and handles

Kids got me the gift set for my birthday.

I wanna go back, but 25 bucks for the pre-shave? nah...

It did make me wanna step my shave game up though.

I found some Van Der Hagen at Kroger on close-out and tried it. It's ahite..

Posted by woe.is.me., Thu Jan-29-15 12:16 PM
I just did a feature with them and they're apparently bringing black men back to the shave razor.

I haven't tried the product yet, but the company seems great.

I can't go too hard for the actual product yet (I haven't razored myself since the early 00s cause it would give me bumps. but i'd be down to try it)

but I really like the company's approach to marketing.
they're savvy and everything they put out looks up to par.
really nice to see from a minority owned business.

12713016, Is the safety razor any different than the one from Art of Shaving?
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Thu Jan-29-15 03:28 PM
I used AoS products for several years and had great results for a good long while but I eventually started getting bumps again. I'm considering Bevel but if the safety razor doesn't have some sort of special design, it ain't worth it.

I'm starting to think my bump issue is partially diet related though because I get the fewest bumps when I'm stictly paleo.

i am beginning to think the same...
12713036, it's the sugar... at least for me
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Thu Jan-29-15 03:44 PM
I've got a sweet tooth and whenever I indulge, I have skin issues.

Some chocolate, a bag of Skittles, whatever... I'm getting an ingrown hair or pimple within the day.
12713056, I've added a gallon of water a day to my diet
Posted by Geah, Thu Jan-29-15 03:53 PM
and i'm done with the gallon by 4pm

add that and no added/refined sugar

and i'm right there with u....its weird for me

i wish i knew how to eat for real when i was in high school

i'da had hoes.

excuse me

more hoes.

12713209, Wait, it's a regular-ass safety razor? I BEEN shaving that way
Posted by John Forte, Thu Jan-29-15 05:21 PM
If I needed a new razor, I'd buy from them, just to support black business, but they aren't offering anything new or novel. They're just marketing it to us (at a serious markup).

12713519, The wife copped me Bevel for Christmas...a quick review.
Posted by doberman, Fri Jan-30-15 02:10 AM
I know it's overpriced but I wanted to support the boy Tristan while giving this razor shave thing one more chance.

I'd been scared to use it but I was switching jobs and had a two week gap where I'm wasn't working and could afford to have the Nestle Crunch face if things went pear-shaped.

So far so good. It's basically the exact same "wet shave" approach that BigReg describes below, just everything all packaged up for you. I like the products they include like the shaving cream and the post shave moisturizer. You can tell they're of quality and have natural ingredients.

The key difference from my other disastrous attempts at razor shaving is one: using the saftey razor and not a 5 blade mach 18 that cuts hairs below the skin line. The the other key, and the Bevel guide tells you this, is to learn the hair growth pattern of your beard and shave WITH the grain. Under my chin, my beard mostly grows to the right and in the past I was unwittingly shaving against the grain and cutting it too low. Now I go with that shit and no razor bumps.

So Bevel's been cool for me thus far. It takes more time than just breaking out my Andis clippers, but it is a closer smoother shave.

And oh yeah...the safety razor is not to be trifled with. It's says "safety" but you can lacerate the fuck out yourself with that shit if you get the wrong angle and too aggressive with your strokes. Be forewarned.

12712824, you can never go wrong with the good ole magic shave. i havent
Posted by mikediggz, Thu Jan-29-15 01:16 PM
used it much lately but i swear by it. in all of the 20+ years that ive been using it i have yet to find a suitable replacement.

Posted by gumz, Thu Jan-29-15 01:26 PM
it's liquid...works real well and smells good. i only use it when i shape up or trim my beard so it's not very frequent but i like it. they sell it at Target too.

And I wait a couple days in between shaves to give the hair a little time to grow out before I chope it down again. I also usually shave the night before so that any inflammation dies down before it's time to hit the office.

12713055, Wet Shaving for the complete and utter win
Posted by BigReg, Thu Jan-29-15 03:53 PM
Whatcha need?

Safety Razor.
Badger Brush.
Quality shaving creams like this:

http://www.fendrihan.com/taylor-bond-street-shaving-cream-bowl-almond-p-1658.html?currency=USD&gclid=CMHxw5aHusMCFYI_aQodqqwAWA

(Don't scoff at the price tag, this lasts forever...it's cheaper then the gillete cans)

and some kind of astringent. I use this one because I am a dick, but you can use witch hazel.

http://www.kiehls.com/Blue-Astringent-Herbal-Lotion/3700194721602,default,pd.html?srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=44-27425300-2

1)Soak the brush in some hot water
2)Hop out of the shower (or use a hot towel method if you have a butler). The heat is to open your pores
3)Dab a small amount of cream on the brush, go to work on ya face
4)Safety razor. It takes a bit to get used to, but the idea is to give yourself a close shave but not 5 blade mega-close so it doesn't lead to ingrowns
5)Water and astringent to keep the pores clean and to lessen the change of ingrowns.

I did this for years and it was spectacular.

12713146, what kinda safety razor do u use? ive got some bumpfighters
Posted by mikediggz, Thu Jan-29-15 04:36 PM
on deck that I use lightly from time to time that are decent
12713201, I use a brand called Merkur
Posted by BigReg, Thu Jan-29-15 05:14 PM
The quality is great, but imho it's a bit overpriced for a bit of steel(i got mine at a drug store for cheap).

But any real safety razor would work...it's the blades that are more, or sometimes less forgiving.

I was using these:

http://www.amazon.com/Derby-Extra-Double-Razor-Blades/dp/B004SGKMA0

that were a bit more on the forgiving side.

12713210, I use Merkur too. Love it

once it gets past that it's straight but my facial hair doesn't grow in thick enough to let it rock.
