12709313, D' or the songwriting publisher would need to file a claim

i was looking for any indication that youtube's content ID has evolved to the point of detecting songwriting but came up short. it seems a claim still needs to be filed per
http://www.theguardian.com/media/2013/jan/18/can-songwriters-make-money-youtube
i didn't know this:
Some publishers now even have a person who does nothing but pitch their songs to YouTube cover artists with large channels, says Frank. "If a song has 500,000 views it'll be a few hundred to a few thousand dollars that come into the pipeline," he explains.

Posted by howisya, Mon Jan-26-15 12:49 PM
i guess the publishers figure there is no way to stop people from covering songs on youtube, might as well collect the songwriting royalties and up to 100% of the ad revenue on the videos

it makes sense, i'm pretty sure you can't legally block a performer from performing and even releasing a piece of music, it's just a matter of attribution and collecting royalties
12709557, All the big publishers "claim" their songs though.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Jan-26-15 02:06 PM
The fact that this is listed by name with all the song titles listed and has been up for a few weeks suggests to me that this is all legal. I could be wrong though.

12709612, do they?
Posted by howisya, Mon Jan-26-15 02:32 PM
obviously they employ people to scour youtube specifically for their content, but i'm sure they miss some, maybe even a lot, especially if there is no attribution. i was more interested in debunking the idea that there was some kind of automatic payment from youtube. when it comes to performances, the publishing rights have to be claimed first, which means coming across each video. i'm curious how soon youtube will have an automatic detection of a previously published song (not recording) if ever. i'm sure that algorithm would be quite complicated and would have all sorts of interesting side effects like detecting plagiarized and similar pieces of music. right now if a rapper uploads a video rhyming over someone else's beat, content ID will list the original artist and song below the video, for example, but imagine if the same could be applied to songwriting.

>The fact that this is listed by name with all the song titles
>listed and has been up for a few weeks suggests to me that
>this is all legal. I could be wrong though.

attribution doesn't change its legal status any more than how long it's been available. it's all legal, there are just royalties to be paid, and they don't start until a claim is filed because youtube puts the onus on the publishers (gee, wonder why). since this is to do with songwriting, the rights society probably is on top of it, but if it were up to d'angelo or his label, look no further than the live and mixtape bootlegs being sold under his name for the last several years.

Posted by howisya, Mon Jan-26-15 07:35 PM
to be absolutely clear, i am talking about the new performance of a song, not the use of its preexisting recorded version. the latter is detected by content ID, but to my knowledge the former isn't (yet).
12710276, it'll detect the actual original songs indeed. This is about covers though...

In modern times, now that Black musicians tend not to get jerked for their publishing (360 deals aside), I support covering songs if you have the ability to do so, regardless of race. All the old dynamics are gone. it's not like this duo is gonna blow up and D will die unknown (or far lesser known) when compared to them. This isn't the old Elvis/Pat Boone days.

I dig hearing another vocal perspective on these records and the acoustic ax-work is good.

I'm kinda suspecting D's intent was clearly realized with the way he sang AND recorded the album. If he WANTED it to be perfectly clear and understandable on first listen he would have recorded it that way...
and also....it's HIGHLY likely he intended to provide just a TASTE on the album so that folks would clamor to see him live in hopes that he'd sing it more clearly ....
or perhaps he intends to do his own unplugged release where he sings it clearly...

who knows...
but your reason for liking this cover is kinda lame....if you really wanted to get what he was saying, there are PLENTY of sites that have gone down the path of deciphering the album. It's part of the fun....

I think this woman can sing jsut fine...I think I even said as much...my beef isn't with her singing at all....she's obviously got talent.....

But she didn't really put her own twist on this cover like a lot of these Youtube artists do....
she simply sang the lyrics clearer than D did....

As far as not understanding the lyrics, D has all the lyrics in a PDF on his Black Messiah website, no issue with not being able to understand anything. http://blackmessiah.co/

ok cool thanx for the history lesson, though usually this has been done a few years after the initial release, right ? Not 43 days after an album was released, righ ?
12710959, note: Stax house band, Booker T & MGs covered a Beatles album.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jan-27-15 08:19 PM
...just a few months after Abbey Road was released. LOL. so the 43 days thing isn't a thing either, dude. let it go.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McLemore_Avenue

it gets no more Soul and Black than the Stax house band. and not much more white and Pop than the Beatles.

so this white lady covering D's album ain't such a thing either, really. and if it is it's just 'payback' for what Booker 'nem did. LOL. but really it's just not a big deal. at all.

>Can anyone point to a situation where someone covered another
>artist's entire album ? I've never seen that done before,
>thats my issue.

it's not as uncommon as you think. usually it's done in concert. sometimes it's done as a studio record (which seems more desperate and coattail riding than at a live show, but it can be good). finally, beck did a whole series of video covers of complete albums along with well-known guests as part of his record club.

>If she had covered one or two songs, no
>problem. But the entire album? Less than 2 months after it was
>released? Something else going here.. SMH

it strikes me as weird, too (i'm with SHA, not clicking, not interested), but mostly because it's the entire album. hendrix covered a beatles song at a show 3 days after it was released (in front of the beatles, no less): http://www.beatlesbible.com/1967/06/04/mccartney-harrison-watch-jimi-hendrix-london/ point being, it's done, just probably not often the entire album (if ever).

All the fresh styles always start off as a good little hood thang
Look at blues, rock, jazz, rap
Not even talking about music, everything else too
By the time it reach Hollywood, it's over
But it's cool, we just keep it going, make new shit

Take our game, take our name
Give us a little fame, and then they kick us to the curb
That's a cold thang

12710962, entire album covers as studio recordings are not uncommon.

usually they are forgotten about pretty quickly and not even countered as major releases by their fans. that often means they were done for fun, as a quick cash-in, or a combination of the two. i suppose the same could be said about doing it live as a video, although i can't blame anyone for being suspicious.

i can be pretty cynical, but since i don't know her and have decided not to watch/listen, i won't speculate, only say that just as it's true people can be shrewd and opportunistic, they can also be ginuwine (oh, that's next month, sorry)

Covering someones song live is cool in my book though posting a video on youtube, covering an entire album strikesvia someone elses coat tails.

Thanx for the info and history lesson!

I just can't clap to the fact that I haven't even fully digested it as a work. The songs are just too fresh in my head to allow for a coffee shop interpretation of what I feel is a pleasingly grimy album. I would be mildly entertained if she had waited 'til at least the spring to do this. I never heard of the chick before, but in looking at the list of videos, it seems like she waits to pounce on the hotness and give her own spin. She's talented for sure, I'm just not standing in support of this effort. JMO.
