Have you ever spent extended time in other regions of the country that have ethnic enclaves? Say, the latino west coast or southwest, or the asian west coast or Atlanta Metro, or the black southeast, or northeast?

The midwest is where all that american essentialist mythology is taken to heart FOR REAL FOR REAL. And where other parts of the country have at least some smatterings of immigrant communities or Black people in rural areas to kind of FORCE white people to get out of their own ass for a minute...the midwest lacks that outside of some of the major cities. And hell, in some major cities the black communities are FUCKED UP in ways that you'd be hard pressed to find in major cities in other parts of the country.
