12707620, I'm basing this on where would I least want to stop for gas at night Posted by John Forte, Fri Jan-23-15 02:43 PM
in a small town
1. Ozarks 2. Appalachia 3. Mountain West 4. Gulf Coast 5. Texas 6. Southwest 7. Great Plains 8. Southeast
For the most part, I'd feel safe stopping in New England, Mid Atlantic, Upper Midwest and the West Coast.
They hate niggas too, but I'm probably less likely to be lynched.

black prince md came here for a vacation. he's gay and black and had a nice time in some small town in kansas i told him no to go to because it would be boring, not dangerous. the great plains is bordred by colorado which has legalized weed and iowa which often votes democratic. even omaha voted for obama the first time around. there are so few black people they basically don't worry about them like northeasterners or southerners.

|
12708222, This is so weird to me. Posted by deejboram, Sat Jan-24-15 08:26 AM
What part of boston did you live and what part of boston did you experience the most racism?
i've been in some shitty MA towns (brockton, worcester, taunton, fall river, new bedford, springfield, holyoke, amherst, north hampton, framingham, north adams, etc) and i never got a "nigger go home" vibe.
boston seems so west coast with their racism to me
|
12708469, I would never live in that place. I've been there multiple times Posted by exactopposite, Sat Jan-24-15 08:05 PM
each time I have been there I stayed with people who lived there. I was staying in dorchester in mission hill.
Boston is easily more racist than anywhere I have been in the south and I lived in the south for 30 years. You are one of the few black people I know of that cops pleas for boston. Pretty much every black person I know who has been there says it's way racist.
Granted the US is a racist society, so it's normal for a city in this country to be racist. Boston is just way more racist than the "normal" amount of racism that I'm used to. I can feel it in the air when I'm there.
Also the weather sucks, the accent sounds stupid, and the streets make no sense. Fuck that place.
|
12708491, RE: I would never live in that place. I've been there multiple times Posted by Corey_Atherley, Sat Jan-24-15 08:59 PM
>Also the weather sucks, the accent sounds stupid, and the >streets make no sense. Fuck that place.
No offense, but I held my breath and tried to reason with your argument up until this emotionally-charged, and immensely ignorant and bitter statement. I was born and raised in Boston (I also happen to be a dark-skinned black man) and I have never encountered overt racism my whole life that I have lived there. Not once have I even had any brushes with law enforcement. It generally all depends on where you were when you visited or briefly lived in Boston. What other neighborhoods, besides what was mentioned, did you go to? (Dorchester and Mission Hill are mixed neighborhoods by the way, even though the majority has always been Afro-American and Hispanic). What types of people did you hang out with or encountered? Yes, Boston does have a tainted history with racism, but so does EVERY city in America and around the world where there are mixed races of people with different beliefs, values, philosophies, politics, religions, idealizations etc. Racism happens everywhere, and to single out Boston is a rather clouded and narrow-minded view. For the most part, Massachusetts (and all of New England) is one of the most important areas in the nation that took part in the establishment of America. It also jump-started education, progressiveness, liberalism and the abolition of slavery: not to mention some of the most important figures in African-American history were from Massachusetts and had fought in the The Boston Revolution: the war that helped to create the United States. So while I agree with you on some level (and I'm sorry you had to encounter racism by a few bad apples) you can't ignore and fail to acknowledge Boston's important role in African-American history.

I've been there plenty of times and I know what I think about the place. Nobody is changing my mind about that. In my book boston is america's asshole.
|
12708713, RE: man fuck boston. You posting mad emo right here Posted by Corey_Atherley, Sun Jan-25-15 05:52 PM
I apologize if I offended you and you took what I said out of anger. I did type some strong words. But being a native, I just wanted to enlighten you about the great things about Boston aside from racism (which as I explained before) is prevalent all throughout this country that was mainly built on slavery and genocide. Philly has a history of racism too, but there are so many great things about Philly that I wouldn't look at the racial aspect. Race is such an overrated topic beaten to death. I look at things in a broader perspective.
|
12708745, I don't mean to imply that the place has no redeeming qualities Posted by exactopposite, Sun Jan-25-15 07:56 PM
I'm just sticking to the topic at hand here, which is racism. Of course the city has a much more complex history than I'm describing in this post. A conversation about that would require a post of it's own.

12710839, RE: *side eye* Posted by Corey_Atherley, Tue Jan-27-15 05:33 PM
I'm over race matters. I don't beat myself up or wallow in being a victim. From my experience (as a dark-skinned black man) I grew up in a mixed community. I shared the same playground with whites, went to school with them, and drank from the same water fountains. Have I experienced some level of ignorance? Who hasn't? But when some of us wallow in being victimized and then turn around and blame a particular race for our bad choices and personal pitfalls, that deserves a "side eye". This is why white people accuse of us of playing the card at every turn, especially with a man of color in the White House. The very same black folks crying foul over oppression are in their communities tearing down their own, neglecting their own, not providing for their own, and raping / killing their own. Hate begets hate. I cannot stress that enough.

Mission Hill is its own community filled with puerto ricans and cape verdeans. Pretty low-income. Dorchester is really black with a buncha west indians. still low(er) incomed compared with the rest of Boston.

When you kick it with white folks in Mississippi, there's more of a sincerity there. With others, it's an agree to disagree type thing.
When you kick it with white folks in Dallas, with a more Northern style racism, you're not really clear on who has white supremacist beliefs and who doesn't. And too often they do, all up in your face grinnin.
Even back then MLK himself said the midwest was worse and that's where most of the sundown towns were.

That nice shit is just surface level. I don't care how many Black folks move there. The kind of racism I grew up with in the 80s and early 90s was a lot like the kind depicted in movies about the 60s. Stuff like not being allowed to swim in the public pool in Porterdale, which was eventually cemented over to avoid integration. The Klan marching during the homecoming parade. Fighting at the high school because white folks didn't want a Black valedictorian. It's still there, though. It just doesn't bubble to the top as quickly as it used to.
|
12707879, the white people are just about as racist everywhere... Posted by ndibs, Fri Jan-23-15 05:07 PM
but in places like new york they just don't make up a majority so they have less power...
nyc has the most segregated schools in the country and the reason why is discrimination is so rampant and the norm when it comes to housing.
it's a smiliar situation when it comes to employment, but as many non-white people are doing the hiring as whites.
basically there's a smaller percentage of racist people in power. probably the whiter the area, the more affected you'll be by racism.

Have you ever spent extended time in other regions of the country that have ethnic enclaves? Say, the latino west coast or southwest, or the asian west coast or Atlanta Metro, or the black southeast, or northeast?
The midwest is where all that american essentialist mythology is taken to heart FOR REAL FOR REAL. And where other parts of the country have at least some smatterings of immigrant communities or Black people in rural areas to kind of FORCE white people to get out of their own ass for a minute...the midwest lacks that outside of some of the major cities. And hell, in some major cities the black communities are FUCKED UP in ways that you'd be hard pressed to find in major cities in other parts of the country.
All that leads to a white entitlement that's on a grillion

Man you ain't never lived, they don't have shit to do and want to feel tough like the LAPD that patrols Venice (which is gentrified as fuck).
Torrance is bad, but not as much as they used to be, back in the 90's when they had NNITAD, it was wild. Now, they just do pointless harassing which takes place mostly in North and East Torrance.

No one was ever lynched in the Midwest or New England.
There were no Rosewoods in the Midwest or New England, unless you count Tulsa as "midwest".
Martin Luther King was murdered in the SOUTH.
Medgar Evers was murdered in the SOUTH.
The Ku Klux Klan was formed in the SOUTH.
Jim Crow was created in the SOUTH.
Cheney, Goodman, and Schwerner, Viola Liuzzo and numerous other Civil Rights activists were murdered...where? You already know.
An entire Black town, Rosewood, was burned to the ground...in the South.
It's the South by a mile and the other regions don't even come close.

Most major Black American movements have started there
the closest we've ever had to autonomous black communities have been in the south.

12708547, You already know, based on the preface statement. Posted by Soon, Sun Jan-25-15 03:22 AM
The distinction between regions is the skill at masking/refracting it.
In the south (outside of major cities), cats give no damns. And in a way, that makes (some of) them less racist and more just xenophobic.
As for the greatest concentration of intensely racist thinking...follow White Flight™. In my area, that will be the ring of suburbs one level past the ring of suburbs that surround Atlanta. Follow the demographic shifts of the last 20 years in other metro areas nationwide, and you'll see similar patterns, within context.
|
12708580, the homogenous parts. Posted by SoWhat, Sun Jan-25-15 10:27 AM
it's the spaces that're racially homogenous - that's where it's at. usually those ppl have gathered together like that b/c they don't wanna live around The Other(s). why come? b/c they racist. by definition.

12708636, The Northwest by far. Posted by Kira, Sun Jan-25-15 02:06 PM
Southwest is racist as well but covert racism is worse than regular pre-2009 racism. The midwest isn't racist relative to the populations that exist within the boundaries. Prejuidice white people exist everyone until you meet their sons and daughters.
Northwest is on some extra shit. However, anyone with street smarts gets it and plays the game accordingly.
