12706585, Empire ratings still climbing in Week 3 (swipe)
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Jan-22-15 08:10 PM
Fox got one.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/tv/2015/01/22/empire-fox-ratings-climb/22168533/

Fox continues to build its Empire.

The hip-hop family soap drew an average of 11.1 million same-day viewers for Wednesday's third episode, up from 10.3 million last week and 9.9 million for its Jan. 7 premiere.

A drama that builds in its second and third weeks is a rare and impressive feat, hinting at long-term success as more viewers discover the show, which stars Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson.

One factor in its favor: Competing ABC comedies Modern Family and Black-ish (which also features a mostly black cast) aired repeats Wednesday night. But typically new shows' premieres attract their largest audience, while subsequent episodes decline and then settle at a lower number.

Instead, Empire's audience was up 8% week to week, and its young-adult viewership rose 10%. Sixty percent of the audience for its first two episodes was African-American.
12706588, I really cant stand Terrence Howard
Posted by deejboram, Thu Jan-22-15 08:16 PM
and taraji's role is just

i cant even find the words

>she having fun out there. like spader on the blacklist

sees it^^^^^Taraji is making it happen on that show with a wink....

The weak link weirdly enough is Terrence...I read that Wesley Snipes was supposed to get that role but Taraji said she would only do it with Terrence...I would have dug Wesley going HAM on that show. He would have been much more sinister in that role....
12706611, Taraji is having fun, it seems.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Jan-22-15 08:54 PM
i love watching her. and Terrance.

i didn't expect to like the show but i'm all in.

oh...and NAOMI CAMPBELL!!!! hellz yeah.

Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Jan-22-15 08:57 PM

12706621, Terrence fucking sucks

And what's up with the bamma's hair? It goes from conk to regular and back, in a matter of seconds, during the same scene.

Is that Howard's fault? I like that passive thuggary. He makes people think that they can say whatever and then they experience that "OH SH**" look when dude Kirks out.

I'll record this but still tune in to new episodes of black-ish.

Posted by Numba_33, Fri Jan-23-15 02:10 PM
in that I have less then zero interest in watching that show. Already hurts that I'm not a Terrence Howard fan, and even worse I'm sick of watching soap opera-ery stuff like Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder. Judging from the responses on the prior thread on the show, looks like that show is up that alley.

Becoming more and more detached with pop culture as the days go on and I'm not even that close to 40 years of age.

Sorry for the misplaced rant.
12707561, there was a rerun of MF/Black'ish and i still didn't watch Empire

Posted by mistermaxxx08, Thu Feb-05-15 03:49 PM
right villian and chemistry though as Much as I dig Terrence Howard he is kinda canada dry on the show in places.

however sex, drugs, music industry lore myth and reality makes a compelling drama and it will stay solid.

truth is being on Network tv is the cherry on top because on cable they might be lumped with 50's show and get a select eye view.

this is a proven formula and it works despite obvious kinks in it.

the show is 2nd tier level type of tv show however timing is key and it works

"A KU KLUX KLAN PRODUCTION IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING"

Make no doubt about it...
this is where the financing for this show is coming from.
The Koch Brothers or Rupert Murdock.
You can defend ‪#‎EMPIRE‬ all you want.
But it takes a far right, "Anti-Obama", bigoted network like Fox TV to put a low life depiction like this minstrel show on the air.
Yet once again, African Americans have been "Bamboozled & Hoodwinked" into sucking down whatever social cripplling, mud-slosh Hollywood wants to throw our way.
Just to see ourselves on Television.
This is a show about blacks murdering blacks, ex-felons from prison running their families, black businessmen operating on the fringes of the law (who just happen to get their operating capital from selling drugs) Pimps of black and white women and pimps of the black community, backstabbing black females who spew mindless ebonics, uneducated young African Americans who can only sing, gossip and dance. In other words the cast of "Empire".
Every degrading stereotype, (sans-black face) that a one hour drama could possibly cram together.
DW Griffith (Ku Klux Klansman and film maker) would have love this writing...
and called it "Birth Of A Hip Hop Nation".
BILLY GRIFFIN
12722034, smh... why can't this shit just be entertainment?

Yeah....I'm on my race man shit...But this^^^^is idiotic trying-to-be-intellectual, weak tea bullshit...

People need to read this Op-Ed piece on people doing too much when it comes to critical break-down of Empire. Not a huge fan of the ol "Hating" fall back....Kinda lazy. But his overall point is valid...

----

Dear Empire Critics, Stop Hating. You Just Don't Get It.
Ernest Owens

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ernest-owens/dear-empire-critics-stop-_b_6594916.html

Dear Empire critics,

In a society that is currently more observant of media and entertainment pitfalls than ever before, sometimes we are too quick to judge. The speedy jolt of a tweet to pass prejudgment, or the too-full-of-assumptions Facebook essay to sound off on a quick observation, continues to reflect a culture that misinforms more quickly than it educates.

To all those who quickly critiqued Oscar-nominated filmmaker Lee Daniels' groundbreaking prime-time drama Empire as nothing more than another television show that is "failing black people": Take several seats and look carefully.

Your misplaced condemnation proves not only that you are showcasing total personal bias but that you are also out of touch.

Critics who pan this show are typically divided into two spheres: They're either advocates of making black television a respectability-politics showcase or they want to improperly use critical race theory.

The former wants programs that showcase blacks in a "proper" light, living behind nice picket fences with both parents in the household and all the children getting along just fine and no "ratchetry" to be found among this well-educated faith-based unit. Basically, these narrow-minded critics secretly desire to recreate The Cosby Show in any way possible, because it makes them feel acceptable under the white perception of a fantasied middle-class black family that ignores the socioeconomic disparity of their peers in America.

The latter also wants to police black imagery. They try to apply very strategic and scholarly approaches to every single aspect of the show. If there are gay black men in the episode, they are quick to misconstrue the inclusion and rather inappropriately cite all the times mainstream programs "emasculated the black man." If they see that a black woman is ever upset or violent, they are quick to act as though the media is in a conspiracy to depict the "angry black woman" trope at every opportunity. They ignore the context of a plot and setting and apply everything they see to their academic prerogative.

What both of these types of critics have failed to realize is that Daniels is a black gay man who is getting the chance to artistically produce his imagination and expression of society for network television to see. This show is not intended to garner white people's approval of our existence -- and if you have been keeping up with the headlines, you should know that your respectability won't save you. It's a prime-time drama for entertainment and reflection, people, not a political editorial or a public-policy initiative. Daniels is a creator who should be given a right to fully explore his cinematic talent without being constrained by the narrow social confines of "making black people look good."

If you are looking carefully at what I and the increasingly impressive millions of viewers are watching every Wednesday night, you will see a multidimensional cast of black characters who all meaningfully contribute to the plot. You will see various depictions of wealth and success, levels of education, shades and body images of black women, sexuality and acceptance, music and style -- a unique and inclusive look at what issues and discussions we are having in 2015.

The show is relevant and bold enough to be presented on network television and tell a tale that doesn't revolve around a white observance. Where else can you find that on television? While Blackish tries to show a black family adjusting in white suburbia, Empire owns the place. While Olivia Pope is chasing after a white president, Empire has their black CEO talking to President Barack Obama. While How to Get Away With Murder (which I am a die-hard fan of as well) has a black leading actress, she still has to put up with the racial confines of her self-identity and vulnerability. Empire has black women who are motivated, complex and self-driven while not having to take into consideration what white people think.

Empire is our Dallas. It transports us into a reality where we can see ourselves as one of the characters on the show. Whether snobby or reckless, gay or straight, dark or mocha, disabled or not, there is more to be seen from just the story line alone. It is one thing to criticize "reality" television that runs the risk of trying to depict black life disproportionately in one light as opposed to a scripted drama led by a black filmmaker who is guiding the plot.

For those critics who argue for diversity in prime-time in one breath but are then quick to tear down a black program that hasn't even made it to its second season, check your reasoning. If we are to demand more diverse programs, we have to also respect the nuance in them as well.

No, every show can't be a black family sitcom or an investigative crime spoof. If we are to actually recognize all aspects of black life, we need to recognize that there should be room for the highly educated as well as the working-class. There have to be shows that have heteronormative relationship dynamics but also gay, interracial ones as well. We need to accept that black programs are not reflections of just our own personal and social views but those of the many multitudes of the diaspora.

Empire is a phenomenal step toward encouraging us to see more levels and faces of the black experience than ever before, and we should be celebrating that alone. If that type of subject matter does not appeal to your taste, then respectfully agree to disagree. But just like the many white-dominated prime-time programs that I see on a regular basis that I don't prefer, you don't see me on a campaign to denounce their existence. Let's give our black filmmakers and actors more respect and understanding than that.

The skill set from your high level of inspection and critiquing of this show would be best applied to the various loopholes in wealth disparity in this country or possible discriminatory laws that have yet to reach the Senate floor, not on an evening program that has not even completed its first season. Do better with your educated efforts and theories analytically.

Here's to hopefully seeing you as part of the high ratings on Wednesday nights.
12722141, i...can't do it...

we can't complain no mo' about not having "positive images of Black people" on television.

Folks were given a direct choice between positive and ratchet, and ratchet won by a landslide.
12722290, we love drama? *sigh*
Posted by bonamie, Mon Feb-09-15 01:14 PM
12722293, what was the positive choice? can we define "ratchet" as used here?
Posted by illegal, Mon Feb-09-15 01:16 PM
not smarty-art "define" per se. but what do we really mean? I usually agree with the categoration of RATCHET TV but this show doesn't fit with the others I'd place in the category.
12722316, Empire vs. Black-ish. Same time slot
Posted by b.Touch, Mon Feb-09-15 01:33 PM
(well, half of one anyway)

Not that Black-ish is the perfect prim and proper show some of these high-toned folks think should exist, but it's a Sunday school lesson compared to the excesses of Empire.

After Black-ish came back from reruns following Empire's debut, their ratings tanked and they went right back into repeats again. They really ought to move the show and put one something they don't expect black people to watch at 9:30 PM
12722327, ah, I recall Black-ish getting pushback from what seems like the same crown
Posted by illegal, Mon Feb-09-15 01:38 PM
hence my confusion over what negroes think is Proper Representation
12722336, Black-ish got pushback from its name.
Posted by b.Touch, Mon Feb-09-15 01:40 PM
The show itself is a goofy family sitcom - "Modern Family" with more kids and melanin.
12722341, i love the show
Posted by illegal, Mon Feb-09-15 01:42 PM
and Empire too. ABC Wednesdays has been bullshitting with the new eps lately, but I would probably watch Black-ish and DVR Empire. my lady prefers the opposite order, I can see it both ways & wish they didn't compete.
12722527, yeah i like em both

You got Empire, Modern Family, Blackish, The Game, SWV, there ain't no way to catch ot al on schedule. And last night I messed around and caught a snippet of Nashville, and that was eentertaining as well.
12722731, FOH. There is enough room for both shows to exist.
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Feb-09-15 06:32 PM
12722794, yeah exactly. I think most ppl still/will watch both
Posted by blkprinceMD05, Mon Feb-09-15 07:47 PM
12722802, That unfortunately isn't what the numbers are saying.
Posted by b.Touch, Mon Feb-09-15 07:56 PM
There's room for both shows to exist, but not in simultaneous time slots. As I said above, when Blackish came back from reruns, it was buried by Empire's ratings. They went back to reruns and have the first new first-run episode this Wednesday.

One of them needs to move, and it probably needs to be Blackish. Switching with The Goldbergs and moving to 8:30 would be a good look.
12722818, Well let's give it time. its realy annoying that this has to be a
Posted by blkprinceMD05, Mon Feb-09-15 08:27 PM
Consideration for Black shows, it's like lets manage our scraps and that's such bs to me, maybe Black ish lagged because it went to reruns so soon and ppl didn't know its back

With DVR this shouldn't be such a dilemma

black ish has been very successful and I think it would be fine

Saying something like Black ppl chose ratchet is really offensive too. White ppl are watching both shows as well.

I think it's a great moment that two Black shows on are on the same time and have received great attention
12723096, I was half joking about the positive/ratchet thing
Posted by b.Touch, Tue Feb-10-15 10:18 AM
because it's not that simple & there's other factors in play.

However, we'll see what happens. I still think they should move "Blackish" - even if you try to watch both shows, and to be clear, networks still value live broadcast viewing numbers above all else, how many people will really remember to turn over the ABC in the _middle_ of one of Empire's soapoeraesque plot twists?
12723126, I would love for them to move Blackish earlier
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Feb-10-15 10:37 AM
but I think some of the jokes are questionable for that 8/8:30 time slot.

I would still watch Modern Fam and Blackish over Empire but ABC been bullshitting with new episodes.

Almost felt like they helped Empire on purpose.
12725963, Its both or none at all
Posted by ShinobiShaw, Thu Feb-12-15 01:09 PM
That is how regular tv works. There have been good black tv shows before and we need to support them.
12732817, could it not be a choice between drama and comedy?
Posted by Novembersgift, Fri Feb-20-15 04:03 PM
Or music vs. family sitcom?
Or hour vs. half-hour? (This matters because Empire begins at 9pm. Blackish at 9:30. You gonna sit on your hands for 30mins while everyone else watching Empire just to tune into Blackish when you could EASILY DVR Blackish or hit it on Hulu?)

Or Taraji vs. Tracee? (Light skin booty battle but people got sides)

Every TV choice isn't a political statement. Black people come in all types and I don't even know that I'd call Empire "ratchet TV". I lightweight "hatewatch" the show because it's ridiculous and overwrought but so was Melrose Place and Dynasty and every single telenovela. But those shows get to exist cuz no blacks? Hmm.
12722294, How come darkskin people on the show are low rank?
Posted by Starks dunked on Bulls, Mon Feb-09-15 01:18 PM
And the lightskin people are high rank?
12722302, cuz Snipes declined.

12722319, Snipes didn't decline. Taraji demanded Terrence.
Posted by b.Touch, Mon Feb-09-15 01:33 PM
12722329, point being: the show was intended to have a dark-skinned lead.

He would've been high rank in power, but not high rank in morality/good.

I can just see the scenes where Wesley disowned his gay son while Henson came in and rescued him from his evil dad.

There's still an overall light is better than dark theme on this show.

Posted by blkprinceMD05, Mon Feb-16-15 04:50 PM
An array of Blk women, many of them heroines in the film

There is also a diverse batch of Blk women on empire and one of the most dastardly women on the show is a white woman

So I'm curious what is making yall say that? I'll try to not jump to conclusions but....
12728501, His interviews (not just the 2 year old one people just "found" in

to a gay men's center and walked in and saw so many black women and kids he thought it was a welfare office instead. THey were there for HIV treatment and testing.

I dunno if that was his attempt at a joke, but that's the sort of the thing Lee Daniels says that has people frothing mad.

12725897, Malik Yoba found out Lucious killed Bunky
Posted by nipsey, Thu Feb-12-15 12:11 PM
or whatever his name was. And now that I think of it, I don't know Malik Yoba's name either. He'll just be "Malik Yoba" from here on out.

Anyway, Malik Yoba found out about the murder and told Lucious he was going to increase security and then he hired a guy to take the fall for the murder.

But that scene with him and the white guy hiring the guy to take the fall was one of the dumbest things in this show. Why did Malik Yoba have to show up to the money drop? The goal is to insulate Lucious from this murder. So all he had to do was to give the money to the white guy who would in turn hire the patsy. By showing up to the meet, Malik Yoba exposes himself. The Patsy asked, "Who am I taking the fall for?". So he doesn't even know. But if the cops start to snoop or Patsy has second thoughts, he can give up Malik Yoba who is a direct line to Lucious.

12725948, He choked out the oldest boy because
Posted by nipsey, Thu Feb-12-15 12:55 PM
he lied and gave Lucious an alibi. I guess Malik Yoba didn't like that he lied and kept it from him because I guess CEOs murdering people and covering it up doesn't look good pre-IPO.

I don't know what dark haired guy you're talking about. The white lawyer? He's the one who found the Patsy to take the fall for Lucious.

Overall, great episode. Even though Vernon (Malik Yoba) is schemin', to have a fall guy on tap is a great resource.

TV Ratings: Cookie monster builds as 'Empire' rises again for FOX Wednesday

'American Idol' slips, while all three CBS dramas rise
By Daniel Fienberg @HitFixDaniel | Thursday, Feb 12, 2015 11:45 AM

Another week and, yup, more growth for "Empire," which continues to buck any sort of expectations or recent TV blueprint, maintaining FOX's domination of Wednesday even in a week that saw a dip for "American Idol."

Wednesday saw dips for "Chicago PD," "The Middle," "Modern Family" and "Arrow," while "The Mysteries of Laura" and all three CBS dramas rose.

On to the numbers...

Among adults 18-49, FOX averaged a 3.7 rating for Wednesday night, tops in the key demographic. FOX's total equalled the combined numbers for ABC (2.1 rating) and CBS (1.6 rating) in the key demo. NBC averaged a 1.3 key demo rating, followed by the 0.8 key demo rating for The CW on the night.

Overall, FOX averaged an estimated 11.16 million viewers and a 6.8 rating/11 share for Wednesday primetime, far ahead of the 8.87 million viewers and 5.7/10 for CBS for the night. ABC's 4.4/7 and 6.99 million viewers topped the 6.2 million viewers and 4.0/7 averaged by NBC. The CW averaged 1.3/2 and 2.09 million viewers for the night.

8 p.m. - Even with a drop, FOX's "American Idol" won the 8 p.m. hour with 10.4 million viewers and a 2.7 rating among adults 18-49. CBS' "The Mentalist" was second with 9.05 million viewers and third with a 1.5 key demo rating. ABC's "The Middle" (7.91 million and a 2.1 key demo) and "The Goldbergs" (6.95 million and a 2.3 key demo) easily topped the 5.95 million viewers and 1.1 key demo rating for NBC's "The Mysteries of Laura." The CW's "Arrow" averaged 2.59 million viewers and a 1.0 key demo rating.

9 p.m. - "Empire" ruled the 9 p.m. hour with 11.92 million viewers and a 4.7 rating among adults 18-49. CBS' "Criminal Minds" was second with just under 10 million viewers and third with a 2.0 key demo rating. ABC was second in the key demo and third overall with "Modern Family" (9.8 million and a 3.3 key demo) and "Black-ish" (6.93 million and a 2.2 key demo). NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" averaged 6.17 million viewers and a 1.4 key demo rating in fourth, followed by the 1.59 million viewers and 0.6 key demo rating for The CW's "The 100."

10 p.m. - In the 10 p.m. hour, CBS' "Stalker" averaged 7.58 million viewers to the 6.48 million for NBC's "Chicago PD" and the 5.17 million viewers for ABC's "Nashville." In a rare three-way tie, each of the network dramas averaged a 1.4 rating among adults 18-49, with "Nashville" and "Chicago PD" tying among adults 18-34 and "Stalker" leading among adults 25-54.

Conspicuous consumption and excessive entertainment users with little production, control/ culture to show for it.

So instead of creating twitter you get a bunch of niggas on twitter wasting time talking about Empire.

side note I don't know any niggas running Warner, Universal or Sony.

Who would like to see a show about Clive Davis fucking his artist literally and figuratively while getting fucked?

How about a show where a Jimmy Iovine or Lyor Cohen character is berating niggas in his office on a daily basis and in total control over who gets promoted and who doesn't?

You got slop propaganda on top of all this madness.

Niggas ain't running no Empire in the industry.

12732219, About the music, is it supposed be intentionally cheesy?
Posted by SimplyHannah, Fri Feb-20-15 04:18 AM
Lol I get that Hakeem's character is supposed to be like a representation of what today's mainstream trash hip hop is like, but damn. And honestly Jamal is no better either.

Also Terrence said that he hired Petey Pablo to do some of the writing on the music which I found interesting.
12732221, I'm sure some level of cheese is intentional
Posted by b.Touch, Fri Feb-20-15 04:46 AM
what with people more or less breaking out into fully arranged songs seconds after turning on a Yamaha, rapping/singing if not _to_ each other still _about_ each other to the audience (see also "Good Enough", "Tell the Truth", *insert Jamal song here*)...

Nothing, however, was nearly as cheesy as last night's cover of "Money for Nothing". When dem gals came out with TVs and microwaves on their heads and started doing the shimmy, I couldn't deal lol.

What interests me is how much credit Timbaland is getting for these songs, when, by his own admission on The Breakfast Club, his role as Executive Music Producer, at least in season 1, was only cursorily supervisory. Jim Beanz (who plays Titan on the show) is writing/producing most of these records himself; Tim may or may not be around and may or may not tweak the drums and things when Beanz is done. Raphael Saadiq is credited on some of these episodes as well - I assume he did Jamal's "I Wanna Love You".

i follow jussie on instagram and he shared the credits for the song
it sounded so different from all the other songs i figure it wasn't timbaland

i'm not sure what saadiq produced but i'm beginning to believe more and more that timbaland's actual involvement in the music is less than portrayed

Posted by b.Touch, Fri Feb-20-15 01:05 PM
For those unaware, Empire is an Imagine Entertainment production for Fox. Ron Howard & Brian Grazer (who is also the EP on this show) are LEe Daniels' & Danny Strong's bosses.

Also, I was wondering why they hired Ilene Chaiken, of all people, as showrunner, instead of - y'know - one of us. Got my answer today: she's an alum of Aaron Spelling Productions, and she worked on Dynasty. It's all clear.
12732695, Re: Ilene Chaiken

My gf and I have been trying to revisit and finish watching The L Word season 3 as of late and I have a full hate on for Ilene and the stories she presented that season. It was all so offensive and depressing. Hopefully she's grown as a storyteller since then.

Oh and speaking of random tweets one of our local FOX newscasters was live tweeting Empire a few weeks ago. She's been a newscaster for like 30 years. Very highly esteemed locally. 20 minutes before her broadcast was supposed to start she was tweeting with everyone else about the show. Hilarious.

12732951, how is it weird? Luscious forced them to get married at 18
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Feb-20-15 06:04 PM
he is rich and has more than enough help to raise another kid. He also loves seeing his gay son reproduce.

12733038, Its weird becuz he said he had sex with her ONE time and she came

12733652, That's a plotline they are gonna pop in future seasons
Posted by BigReg, Mon Feb-23-15 09:41 AM
Like Season 2 she's gonna catch sickle cell or something right before he's an opening act for that universes's Beyonce or Katy Perry, forcing him to chose his career or his family (this is after they built up their relationship over those years).

He's gonna try to give her blood and then (plays ominous music) is gonna find out she's not his, then they gonna introduce the real baby daddy as a new badguy (like, their universe's 50 cent or something)
12733735, May happen sooner than that, considering Raven returns in episode 10

I know the ratings are about to plummet though since Mr. Daniels airing out "our" private conversations LOL

e.g. some of us aint too keen on IR
some of us aint to keen on LGBTQ folks3
Mental illness gets ignored
12736510, all three of those appear in the first 2 episodes tho.
Posted by b.Touch, Thu Feb-26-15 08:59 AM
-Cookie doesn't like Rhonda either (she said something to the effect of "why you marry that white girl?")
-We've seen how Andre doesn't take care of his condition
-The homophobia angle takes up significant amounts of time in the pilot, and gave it its "OH S**T!" moment when Luscious threw little Jamal in the trash.
12736511, I know but
Posted by DaHeathenOne76, Thu Feb-26-15 09:05 AM
The anti IR angle interfering with money..I dont think "they" know some of us are that angy LOL

huh
12736515, we'll see. in Luscious' case it's coming from a character
Posted by b.Touch, Thu Feb-26-15 09:14 AM
who is damn near the only person on Earth that didn't approve of his other son coming out.

Plus, this is _far_ from the first time black people who do not approve of interracial relationships have been explored in film and TV. Both "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" and its psuedo remake starring Bernie Mac feature a dad angry at his child for amrrying white.
12736522, ...and the point is to change their mind.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Feb-26-15 09:27 AM
that kind of intolerance isn't presented w/o challenge. the point is usually to change the villain's heart on those issues.

12736523, this is different dude...
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Feb-26-15 09:29 AM
sorry but it's different. We all know some people have problems with interracial marriages...

but this ain't that bruh.

Guess Who's Coming To Dinner is about 2 people who love each other who happen to be Black and White.

This conversation is about those who deliberately marry a skin color for acceptance and have issues with their own race.

12736525, it's not b/c we don't know that to be true of Andre.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Feb-26-15 09:34 AM
Luscious says that but he's a villain.
12736529, maybe... but I doubt it.

There relationship is run like a business IMO.

She has a BJ bib and he tried to whore his wife out for investment money.

he's being presented as racist and homophobic.

he's presented as the old guard. a dying breed (literally - he's dying). his ways of thinking are on the way out.

i expect his change of heart will come.
12737319, yeah i had that thought too, cause i know a lot of white folks

that's a throw away line.

Luscious BROKE THAT SHIT DOWN. You can't run the company because you married a white woman and want their acceptance and they will NEVER accept you.

Nigga... that's some powerful shit to say on TV. That is something every culture says but....not on TV.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cuba Gooding Jr. helped write that shit.

That was an amazing convo, I bet a ton of Black men were sitting next to their white wives feeling uncomfortable as shit. LOL...

some people definitely marry for love but A LOT of them marry for these exact reasons and to hear those words...

12736720, in the world of the show It's completely retarded why

he doesn't choose Andre (or Malik Yoba) to run the company

and the you got a white wife line (and the breakdown) is exactly why I love this show, it's so comically laughable and entertaining

there is nothing in Jamal or Hakeem that shows they want to or could run Empire, because they're artist like Pop-Pop is even dumber

the Andre, wife and other couple dinner scene was comical
12736776, Andre is crazy as hell and I'm pretty sure Lucious knows he's crazy as...
Posted by Billy Ray Valentine, Thu Feb-26-15 01:38 PM
hell and on medication, there is a reason the other board members hate him.

And Anika is half white so Lucious shouldn't have that much of a problem with white people

12737755, in 2014 it kinda is. this aint 1607 - 2006 anymore
Posted by astralblak, Fri Feb-27-15 02:26 PM
I see more and more youth to young adults who are Half white Half Black be adamant, that hey are white as much as Black.

in LA, i've even heard a few white folk hit me with that distinction in random talks about some one like Halle "ohh she's not Black, she's mixed". I'm like huh...

for the podunk rural America I think shit is still on that one drop rule, but for more metropolitan "multi-culti" folk it is changing.

i'm speaking in terms of socialization here, not systemic shit, by the way

lastly, in the world of the show, it seems like Ameka is kinda on that "i'm not a Black like you" shit
12737322, yeah in the real world andre would definitely get it but AT the same
Posted by blkprinceMD05, Fri Feb-27-15 07:33 AM
time i could see an old school Black father who feels hes been shat on by White folks over the year refusing logic and denying the best business person the mantle because he married a White woman

like that really rings true
12736647, Hakeem is probably the only character I like

‘Empire’ Ratings Rise For Unprecedented Seventh Week In A Row
by Dominic Patten

February 26, 2015 8:06am

The Legacy album might be stopped, at least for the time being, but it seems Empire (5.3/15) can’t be stopped by the usual ratings rules. It certainly couldn’t be quelled last night by the double debut of new seasons of Survivor and The Amazing Race. Perhaps “unprecedented” or “juggernaut” are becoming too weak now to describe the Fox hip-hop family drama’s results as it has hit a new high for the seventh consecutive week.

In early fast nationals numbers, last night’s Empire was up 2% from last week’s final numbers. Compared to the 5.1 preliminary result of its February 18 episode, it rose 4%. In total viewers, Empire on Wednesday was watched by 13.8 million to easily be the night’s top show. That’s also a 6% bop up from last week’s total audience.

Those rises were indicated in meter market ratings earlier this morning where the series created by Lee Daniels, Brian Grazer and Danny Strong got a 9.2/14. That’s a 4% rise over its February 18 show, which got an 8.8/13 – the previous record holder. In fast nationals, last week’s primetime-topping episode went on to get a 5.2/15 rating in adults 18-49 with 13.0 million total viewers. Long story short: Fox has come back strong as the Terrance Howard and Taraji P. Henson series started out with an impressive 3.8 rating and 9.9 million viewers in its January 7 debut and has never looked back. In fact , up 39% from its debut, Empire has grown more than any new network drama since the first year of House back in 2004. Obviously quickly renewed by the network for a second season, there are four more episodes of breakout hit Empire left in its freshman season with a double shot on March 18 – will the rise continue?

With American Idol getting a 7.1/11 in MM results, Fox ended up easily winning the night overall. With 55 of 56 markets reporting, the network had a 8.1/13 result – a rise of 12% from last week. NBC was second with a 5.2/8, CBS next with a 4.7/8 and ABC fourth with a 4.6/7. We’ll update with more fast nationals for Survivor’s 30th season debut, Amazing Race’s 26th season premiere, Modern Family, Arrow and other shows on last night later.
12736695, I'm pretty sure following American Idol doesn't hurt

12736700, Actually, Empire is helping American Idol
Posted by nipsey, Thu Feb-26-15 12:32 PM
Idol's ratings have been on a steady decline the past 5 seasons. They have not been able to launch any show after or before American Idol. The closest was Glee, but it couldn't sustain any momentum.

Idol's ratings are up year to year with Empire anchoring it.

Nah...because American Idol's ratings have actually gone up for the first time in years....And I think that has a lot to do with Empire shining a light on FOX overall, which before Empire had been coming in 4th place for a minute....

Empire co-creator Danny Strong recaps the latest episode -- and reveals the series' original title

by Danny Strong • @Dannystrong

Posted February 25 2015 — 3:26 PM EST

Empire’s most recent episode is a drama-filled hour (Jamal finally came out! Cookie gave a verbal beatdown to Camilla!), but it’s also notable for another reason: It marked the directorial debut of co-creator Danny Strong (The Butler, Game Change). In this exclusive blog post, Strong details why he chose this episode to helm—and what he was calling the show before settling on Empire.

The Lyon’s Roar was actually my first title for the series Empire. As you can see, I’m pretty bad at titles. Fox quickly (and rightly) suggested we change it, and eventually the show became Empire. However, I always liked the sound of that title, and when I started writing episode 108, I realized I had finally found a use for it—because there would be not one, but two Lyons roaring before the episode was over.

Attacking homophobia was always a driving force in the earliest stages of creating the show. In conceiving Empire, I knew there would be a gay son that our hip-hop mogul would be loathe to accept. I had been working with Lee Daniels on the film The Butler, and he had told me numerous stories about his father beating him when he was a kid because he knew Lee was gay, even as a child. I had always been deeply moved by these tragic tales, and they made Lee the first person I thought of to collaborate with on my hip-hop idea. In our very first meeting where I pitched him the project, we immediately discussed making homophobia a central theme.

When it came time for me to write the episode I would direct, I selfishly wanted to make sure it contained the moment when Jamal finally came out. Since it was such a major part of the creation of the show, I wanted to have the honor of delivering this crucial turn to the audience. This would be the moment where the Lyon finally got to roar. And with one Lyon roaring, you best believe another Lyon will soon follow.

Lucious roars back at the end of the episode, when he tells Cookie the family song is dead. Her entire goal in this episode is to bring her family back together by producing a family song—but Lucious’ anger and embarrassment at his son’s declaration of self tragically causes Lucious to dig even deeper into his homophobia.

One of my, Lee Daniels’, and our terrific showrunner Ilene Chaiken’s primary thematic goals is to attempt to show people who feel the way Lucious feels that they are making the same huge mistake that he is making about gay issues. Our hope is that by watching this relationship unfold, they will start to question Lucious’ point of view—and perhaps this will make them question their own point of view on the subject of sexuality. Jamal’s roar hopefully will not only inspire other sons to find their inner Lyon, but will also show other fathers that it’s time to move past the backward homophobia of their parents and grandparents. Instead of hate and bigotry, they will begin to roar with love for their children, who are merely staying true to who they are.

Finally, I had a good use for what was initially such a terrible title.

How, exactly, was Anika/Boo Boo Kitty (I've caved) able to put all of Empire's artists into play? Did she void and destroy everyone's contract? Did she drag all of the personnel files into the Recycle Bin?

None of it made sense to me. It was entertaining and tense as hell, mind you, but just...baffling.

Considering that I'm not a Nielsen house, that actually counts more than me watching it live.

I hate watching shows on ABC live anyway. They time compress the shit out of everything.
12748807, can you or someone else explain how online vs live tv ratings are calculated???
Posted by NikaMandela, Wed Mar-11-15 07:54 PM
very interested in this.

12748872, Every video you watch online is metered and charted someplace.
Posted by b.Touch, Wed Mar-11-15 09:56 PM
No matter what, someone knows you watched that clip...and yes, that clip too.

On the other hand, live-TV ratings are calculated based on viewing data from Nielsen houses - predetermined households that Nielsen provides metering boxes that measure what you watch and when. DVR'd shows watched on the same calendar date count the same as live ratings. DVR viewings within 3 days and within 4 to 7 days are also measured, but broken out into separated categories.

There's like 6000 or 7000 Nielsen households across the country; their ratings are extrapolated to represent the millions of people in the country. That data is what is generated in Nielsen reports, which are broken out by dayparts (morning, midday, afternoon, prime time, late night) and generated into reports for the next day (hence why you'll often see initial ratings reports referred to as "overnights").

They also give families in some areas little booklets to fill out with their viewing habits for a week, though that data of course takes longer to get back than overnights.

As a non-Nielsen household, it really doesn't matter than I watch "Empire" or "Blackish" live. Though online viewing still has less of an impact on ad revenue and prestige than it should, for me that actually gets tracked someplace while my watching live TV does not.
12748809, i watch it on Fridays (sometimes Saturday)

Fox Getting Big Bucks For 'Empire' Season Finale
Buyers say there is strong demand for limited commercial inventory in the highly rated series 3/16/2015 08:10:00 AM Eastern
By: Jon Lafayette

WHY THIS MATTERS
Big ratings eventually pay off when a network finds a hit.

Fox is cashing in on its new hit series Empire by getting between $500,000-$600,000 per 30-second commercial in the show’s finale, according to media buyers.

The amount is several times what the show sold for in the upfront—between $120,000- $150,000. But that was before the show debuted and its ratings began a historic week-after-week climb to become the highest-rated drama on broadcast television.

“They’re getting Walking Dead money,” said one media buyer, noting how unusual it is that the highest-rated show on television—and the one most valued by advertisers—appears on cable. “It’s a hit show. There will be a lot of interest in the finale. It’s going to do a great number, so I would think they’re getting upwards of $500,000 a unit.”

Fox decided to launch a new series with limited commercial interruptions. Before last year’s upfronts, it chose Empire because it had high hopes for the show and wanted to turn it into a TV event.

Limiting the number of commercials is a tactic that is attractive both to viewers and advertisers, who prefer a more uncluttered environment for their commercial messages.

Sources close to the network say limiting the commercials has been a factor in the show’s popularity. And with fewer spots, Fox pushed for a premium price for the commercials that did air in the show. (A few years ago, Fox cut the number of commercials in Fringe as part of an effort it called Remote Free TV. But Fox couldn’t raise ad rates enough to offset the reduction in inventory and the network punched the off button on the idea.)

0303_Currency_chart.jpgMedia buyers said the decision to reduce commercial clutter in Empire didn’t mean that Fox left a lot of money on the table as the show grew into a huge hit.

“These things are so hard to see in advance,” one buyer said. “I think they did as good a job as they could, given what the prospects of the show were. It’s not really that strong a marketplace now anyway, so there’s only so much you can push price. I don’t think they’re looking in the rearview mirror and thinking they could have done a heckuva lot better.”

The March 18 finale is a different story, however. “You’re dealing with a handful of units and you’re going to try to get as much as you can,” the buyer said. “They’ll probably get a movie studio or someone else to pay that price.”

While networks often air the premiere of a series with limited commercial interruptions, Fox has continued to keep the number of spots down throughout Empire’s run. The show this season has averaged about 12.4 commercial minutes per hours, compared to 16 minutes per hour on other Fox shows.

The biggest advertisers on Empire have been Warner Bros., Verizon, AT&T, Ford’s Lincoln division and the Amazon Kindle, according to iSpot.tv. (The total also includes a substantial amount of promos for Fox.)

The popularity of Empire is also driving video-on-demand ad sales for Fox as viewers who haven’t been watching check out what their friends are talking about and try to catch up. Generally, when networks sell ads in on-demand programming, they sell a package of shows on the schedule, not just an individual show. But buyers note that because VOD viewers will order up only the shows they want to see most, on-demand usually provides a mix of what advertisers consider high-quality programming, including Empire.

All in all, the show should be a boon for Fox, whose ad revenue was down 6% to $947 million, according to MoffettNathanson Research.

Whether or not Fox decides to continue to present the show with limited commercial interruptions, any short-term sacrifice will pay off for the network because a hit show is an important building block in the upfront, and beyond.

“It’s one of those classic cases of a show just striking a chord at the right time. There’s nothing else like it on TV,” said the buyer. “It’s very well produced, with great talent in front of the camera and behind the camera. All of those things sort of came together at once and I’m sure it’s gratifying for them that when you can put all those pieces together, a broadcast network can still get a hit.”

‘Empire’ Finale Ratings Hit New High, Double Digit Rise Over Last Week

By Dominic Patten 39 mins ago
Empire

There were resolutions, successions, music and arrests on the 2-hour Season 1 ender of the hip hop drama last night. And for the 10th week in a row since its January 7 debut, Fox’s Empire (6.4/20) hit a brand new viewership high of 16.5 million. That’s up 10% from the 14.90 million that the Lee Daniels, Danny Strong, Ilene Chaiken, Francie Calfo and Brian Glazer EP’d series drew on March 11. Empire also had another new record among adults 18-49 with a 10% rise over last week’s 5.8/17, which was tied with the drama’s March 4 show for the previous all time high. In early numbers, the 8 – 10 PM finale was also up an amazing 68% jump over the 18-49 rating of its debut and rose 67% over the 9.90 million who tuned in for that first show of the 12-episode season. Don’t be surprised if those Empire numbers are adjusted in later ratings – they commonly have been.

In its usual 9 PM slot, Empire pulled in a 6.8/21 and 17.5 million total viewers. That’s a 17% demo and viewership rise over last week. The first hour of the show got a 6.0/20 rating with 15.577 million viewers. Put that in perspective, Empire was grown its total audience every week since it hit the air and saw its demo rating slip only once over its entire first season – that slip was in its fourth week show of January 28 when the show got a 4.3, down a tenth from the 4.4 of the week before. Empire‘s February 4 broadcast garnered a 4.6 and the series has moved on up every week since with the last two weeks being even at a 5.8. With those strong Live + Same Day results plus a very strong digital afterlife on DVR and streaming, Empire will end its season as the top series demowise on the Big 4 and just behind AMC’s blockbuster The Walking Dead on all of TV.

Speaking of which, the March 15 episode of the zombie apocalypse series based on the Robert Kirkman created comics got a 7.0 among the 18-49s. The all time high for The Walking Dead was its Season 5 premiere on October 12 last year when the AMC series got a 8.7 rating among adults 18-49 with a total viewership of 17.3 million. The Empire finale did top the 13.8 million that this week’s WD had.

NBC was all encores last night while ABC’s only original was Diane Sawyer’s The Untold Story Of The Sound Of Music special at 10 PM. CBS had a full slate with Survivor going head-to-head with the Empire finale and CSI Cyber at 10 PM. The CW had Arrow and Supernatural. We’ll update with more ratings as we get them.

-I felt it was cheap writing for Cookie to find out that Lucious killed Bunky through the talking in his sleep. He was sleep enough to do that, and to talk about how he doesn't have ALS, but then wakes up to grab Cookie's hands as she tries to kill him. Eh.

-Was Hakeem REAAAAALLY that much in love with the old broad for him to be that upset with Lucious? And Anika was really that low to fuck with him?

-Vernon's death scene was wild, but for her to drop the "I'm pregnant" bomb right in the middle was just doing too much. It was already a lot that she happened to walk in outta nowhere, and that he acted as if she hadn't just walked out on him. They just fixed it outta nowhere.

-Jamal's battle sing scene. Lol. Bitch.

b. Touch disagrees, lol, if for no other reason than it allowed Mario Van Peebles to shoot Lucious' nightmare stage-play style. The pillow bit is the only part that felt hollow to me, but...this IS Empire

Yes, and yes. They'd already established Hakeem legit loved Camilla, and that Anika was evil.

That moment was a little compressed, like it should have been split into two, her coming back first and then the fight with Vernon. Then again, they probably smashed both together (not very deftly) for time.

*sigh* That. This is what happens when you don't have hip-hop tech advisors in the writers' room.

Empire with their smear campaign have done more to boost it's ratings than ANY television commercial.

It's a lost cost.
Time to move on

Find another target to focus their faux outrage over

The more they hated on it...they more people wanted to see for themselves as to what the big deal was.

That's why for 10 consecutive weeks millions and million more people tuned in (and they STAYED watching it)

Posted by SuiteLady, Fri Mar-20-15 09:14 AM
I thought of was "Malcolm in the Middle." Not sure if it is a good comparison, but they were dysfunctional. So was "Married with Children" - wasn't that on FOX? And does "Family Guy" count, even though it is a cartoon? FOX seems to relish dysfunction from my view point.
12756925, The first hour was top-notch, the second, not so much.
Posted by b.Touch, Thu Mar-19-15 07:25 PM
Mario Van Peebles put his foot in his part of the finale, especially the POV sequences and Lucious' nightmare, shot like a stage play with Bunkie on the edge of the bed looking like An American Werewolf in London.

That episode was, easily, one of Terrence Howard's best acting performances ever.

The second half was shaky. Debbie Allen was great at handling the quieter stuff and the stage show, but the soap-operaic material didn't come off as it should have. Then again, this episode was primarily concerned with setting up Season 2, and in all truth the script is of some magnitude weaker (that rap battle, SMH SMH SMH SMH).

Fox expands Empire in season 2
BY JAMES HIBBERD, NATALIE ABRAMS
Posted May 11 2015 — 9:44 AM EDT

Fox is expanding its breakout mega-hit Empire. Fox chairman and CEO Gary Newman confirmed he’s boosting Empire’s episode count in the second season to 18 episodes, versus the 12 episodes that aired during its debut season this year.

Also, with Empire launching in the fall instead of midseason, the network plans to split its 18-episode second run into two halves.

The Terrence Howard-starring hip-hop drama made a record-breaking splash in its debut on Wednesday nights, defying gravity by continuing to grow with each subsequent episode. Its season finale snagged 16.7 million viewers and a 6.5 in the 18-49 demographic. Going into the upfronts, one big question was whether Fox would move Empire to Thursday nights, which is the most lucractive weekday for advertising. But doing so would also mean that Empire would likely face ABC’s own powerhouse, Scandal, at 9 p.m.

“We’d be crazy to move it,” Fox chairman and CEO Gary Newman told reporters ahead of the network’s upfront presentation on Monday morning. “We want to thank and reward our fans by keeping it in that time period… The stories we’ve heard already for season 2 will blow away the audience.”

While Fox does not plan to re-air Empire ahead of the second season—you can watch the full season on Hulu now—the network has a number of ideas to keep the show on viewers’ minds before its return.

“We’ve got a lot of big events scheduled,” Fox’s other chairman and CEO Dana Walden said. “The cast has been out—Jussie and Yazz —performing in various markets. They’ve done mall tours performed in smaller venues. Taraji hosted Saturday Night Live. We’ve got some exciting plans that will kick off in June.” Though Walden declined to get more specific, she did point out that Fox is planning to give the cast some much needed rest time before season 2—a smart move after the cast of Glee seemed to suffer from exhaustion after year-round promotion.

As for the second season, Walden notes, “We’ve also got amazing guest stars that have lined up to be on the show that will help us not only bring back an audience that fell in love with the show, but help expand it as well.” Empire has also signed Ne-Yo to write new original music with Timbaland for the second out.

Empire will return Wednesdays at 9 p.m. this fall.

And on the flyer, it was basically saying "Hakeem Lyon from Empire." This is almost some Humpty Hump shit...he might as well release an actual album under that name and image.

they should be laying on these promoters that "YAZZ" has to be at X font size, and "Hakeem Lyon from 'Empire'" at 0.25X font size.
