12701915, Why do white people love talking about the Wire so much?
Posted by Niq96st, Sun Jan-18-15 02:09 PM

I didn't think it was a parody from the Wire at all. But apparently Esquire did.

I loved the skit though. hilari-scary.

she was bout that life
12703432, not a wire parody but the lazy & pointless shootout at the end
Posted by Riot, Tue Jan-20-15 04:26 PM
actually creates a better space for calling it "wire in 2015"
than snl's original framing, which is just- "random black guys that also are murderous felons"

there were 2 "black sketches" on the whole show (this and the rapper in the studio) and both involved black ppl getting shot at the end
12702002, seriously though SNL
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Sun Jan-18-15 06:00 PM
will have about 15 minutes of solid solid funny stuff. the rest of the show can be garbage

the misses and i will dvr it and FF through the skits that arent funny. its quite enjoyable this way
12702010, it kinda bugged me that they had st. nick and amsterdam as a street sign
Posted by NikaMandela, Sun Jan-18-15 06:09 PM
i mean, i know its a minor detail...but eh. it kinda struck me as "harlem, brooklyn, same difference." lol

maybe i need a smaller tv.

but i loved "you act like they put gluten in your muffins." best line!

Posted by lfresh, Wed Jan-21-15 03:44 PM
i'm pretty sure i know that block
and its technically on the border of ridgewood/bushwick
but still a mostly quiet neighborhood

i think it was mostly an effort from blowing the spot up from tourists, SNL fandom and instagramming folks

they cldve said brooklyn period
and the skit still wld have been funny
either way....LOL LOL LOL
12702801, yeah folks are going ape and it's in an area that's been gentrified
Posted by teefiveten, Tue Jan-20-15 09:33 AM
the store itself is also the size of a closet so while artisanal mayo isn't what i'd expect to be there that's about all you can fit in there

i've also never been by when it's actually open. they keep limited hours

and Sam Mason is doing it right. he had a failed resto and was like 'eff this. i'm going to sell artisanal mayo and ice cream (OddFellows in Wburg) and get paid'.
12702867, im not mad at him...oddfellows is extremely DELICIOUS
Posted by bonamie, Tue Jan-20-15 10:21 AM
and i know my husband wld eat that artisinal mayo to death
i aint buying it though
i dont believe in mayo.
12702879, lol @ don't believe in mayo
Posted by teefiveten, Tue Jan-20-15 10:25 AM
i like mayo but you can make it yourself for pennies. even with fancy ingredients

this is getting more attention that it should b/c he's got a brick and mortar. but it's not like it's some vast mayo emporium. the spot is tiny. if it wasn't mayo they'd be selling some other wackadoo ish in there. or it would be like a taxi dispatch
12702902, especially where it's located LOL
Posted by bonamie, Tue Jan-20-15 10:37 AM
>>selling some other wackadoo ish in there. or it would be like

u been to Daddy Green's Pizza (in the stuy) yet?
i really like it
12702910, nah. i live so close to vanderbilt but when its cold
Posted by teefiveten, Tue Jan-20-15 10:40 AM
i rarely venture over there. too far to walk when it's freezing. which sucks because chuko ramen is the perfect thing to eat when it's that cold. lol.

it's pretty warm this week so i should venture over there. i don't like most of the spots on vanderbilt honestly. mainly because of the prices and the food isn't that impressive. like that R&D 606 place or whatever it's called. i basically only fool w/ Chuko, Vanderbilt (not cheap but I always enjoy the food-the pork belly w/ the grits!), Le Gamin and Mitchell's for an old school diner breakfast
12702918, i dont leave bed stuy if i dont have to LOL
Posted by bonamie, Tue Jan-20-15 10:44 AM
it's sad but it's real
i had to go to atlantic center the other day
i was so annoyed
it aint even far
but still...
i'll have to try chuko...i hadnt
thanks

the food on vanderbilt isnt good at all
i used to go for ice cream
but i'd rather trek to oddfellows now
the hubs likes pequena for breakfast for some reason
but luckily he hasnt mentioned them in a while
im trying to keep it all stuy all the time LOL
gonna make my way to emelines soon, so happy to possibly not have to travel for breakfast
decent enough reviews

12702102, Great until the shooting
Posted by handle, Mon Jan-19-15 01:06 AM
The way it was cut didn't have the impact it could have. A lower angle? A different firing pattern? I dunno.

Very good nonetheless.
12702107, I needed a Chappelle show-type grunt from the shootee.
Posted by Doronmonkflake, Mon Jan-19-15 01:57 AM
12702109, Yes, that would have helped
Posted by handle, Mon Jan-19-15 02:28 AM
It needed a stinger or a tag or something. a grunt, crazier eyes, something. Kevin with a Mayonnaise Boutique bag on ( Apple Store backpack type bag.)

Still not sold on Kevin Hart - I think he's pretty bland. He's kind of always "rushing" things. If he'd slow down a little more I might connect a little more.

Didn't like the rap song at the end either - great concept, but the execution that could have been better. Maybe if the hook got shorter as it went on? It's the difference between an okay sketch and a best of sketch.

Except the James Brown sketch - he nailed that one.
12702192, I like the idea but something was a bit off with the execution.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Jan-19-15 10:00 AM
There was more level to that joke that they missed.

WHITE TRUFFLE MAYO

$8.00

This one is embarrassingly decadent.

Like, maybe shouldn't be eaten in public.

Here's a hint: Drop a dollop on a freshly grilled steak. Or put a small ramekin of it next to a warm artichoke.

Put on some Edith Piaf and close your eyes. Paris.
12702200, How come their live skits aren't funny like this anymore?

12702295, They rarely were
Posted by handle, Mon Jan-19-15 12:39 PM
And when they were it was about acting and timing.

It's the timing of jokes in the live sketches that seem way off.

Kevin Hart's performance this week often seem incredibly rushed in many of the sketches.

Yes it's live, yes they are nervous.

Could they be making too many changes after dress and before live? Are writers punching things up way too late for the cast to be ready?

But it wasn't just Kevin - a lot of the sketches had people rushing - or worse people trying to find where the cue cards were to read them.

And they are never worse when they're trying to be current. Pack 4 Uber jokes into a single episode? Make fun of Jsutin beiber's wiener? Instagram?

At least the show is free to watch, and there are some funny things in it.

They all can't be as good as: https://screen.yahoo.com/unfrozen-cave-man-lawyer-3-223624171.html

I was kinda shocked when I saw zero skinny jeans in Williamsburg and
all the skinny jeans in Bushwick. Went to a dive bar there and it
reminded me of Dallas :/
12702698, isnt williamsburg on the other side of the curve now?

it definitely seemed more yuppie than hipster to me. But I've only

been a few times so maybe I missed something.
12702774, Yup. Outside of a few music venues
Posted by BigReg, Tue Jan-20-15 08:48 AM
and leftover dive bars, the megacondos made the rent untenable even if you stuff 2-3 artists in a divided one bedroom.

"East" Williamsburg and Bushwick is what the neighborhood was ten years ago

12702923, How about Greenpoint? I rarely go over there.
Posted by Goldmind, Tue Jan-20-15 10:47 AM
Has it retained that old Williamsburg feel?

12702926, still pretty polish. its probably not going to look like bedford ave
Posted by teefiveten, Tue Jan-20-15 10:50 AM
ever

but they have restaurants and bars that are edging out some of the old businesses just like everywhere else. and im sure some renters got screwed but it's hard to tell b/c it was always pretty white. lol.

i think it has to do w/ the polish landlords :(

i know ONE black girl who lives out there.
12704580, absolutely
Posted by lfresh, Wed Jan-21-15 03:34 PM

>i think it has to do w/ the polish landlords :(

its still pretty much a family neighborhood and i think once they saw that williamsburg turned into a campus for throw up drunks
they were like hell no

and i dont blame em

bushwick by the factorys is still throw up drunks party town unfortunately
ridgewood is holding out like greenpoint
coincidentally also polish landlords

but there really is a difference in the neighborhoods
in actual houses (history of strong community reps) vs converted factory spaces and how bad the kids think they can trash it
cause trust they are grafitii- ng spaces like its still the 80s
and sometimes i'm like why? thats was a perfectly nice building
take the bridge for example
perfectly nice bridge fixed up nicely
but no
the kids messed it up

Posted by teefiveten, Tue Jan-20-15 09:31 AM
especially over by the grand ave stop i think
there were/are some factories/distribution centers for restaurants and stuff. there's one dumpling "factory" i liked to visit

i mean there's def asians now b/c of gentrification but as far as old nyc chinese there are/were some there
12704593, there was a small korean comm as well
Posted by lfresh, Wed Jan-21-15 03:40 PM

but yeah very small
enough to have a korean christian church in the ridgewood part
