12700663, How long have you had a flat tv?//Who is still rocking with a tube?
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Jan-16-15 11:31 AM
I was thinking about this the other day. When the flat panel tvs came on the market, they were expensive as shit. I remember sitting in my boys' crib asking... "Yo, when are any of us going to be able to afford one of these new tvs?" But prices have dropped so dramatically that like 3-4 years later I had one. And now I'm on my second. Mind you, both of these I've bought off friends who were upgrading for dirt cheap, but that's beside the point.

What were they going for when they came out? Like 5k and up, right?

Then black Friday happened. Now I don't think I know anyone who has a picture tube. Either people have a flat panel or no tv at all. The shift came much quick than I thought it would.

which is already in the works and which was actually conceived by Tesla in the early 1900s.

He developed an idea of drawing electricity from the ionosphere of the planet with large generators, but he was laughed at and betrayed by Edison who wanted to get rich by installing power lines all across the world, which he did.
12702776, Oh Jesus. All of this Tesla nonsense.

I have 1 flat screen (that I did not buy). My living room and my son's tv are tubes. I ain't got flat screen $$.
12700706, When is the last time you've priced a lcd/led tv?
Posted by DavidHasselhoff, Fri Jan-16-15 11:46 AM

12700854, so am I though

>as long as my tvs work... I don't need new ones

I don't get the whole "run out and buy new shit even though the old stuff still works" mentality. Just 'cause it ain't HD doesn't mean you can't watch the game or your favorite shows anymore... Shit just ain't in high def. You still saw that play, you still see a nigga dunk on two forwards, you still saw Manny get knocked the fuck out, and HD ain't helpin any of them Atlanta housewives look any better.

12700695, We have a tube in the bedroom. Got a flat screen in either 2008 or 2009
Posted by Marbles, Fri Jan-16-15 11:42 AM

Posted by deejboram, Fri Jan-16-15 11:43 AM
and I had been married for 1.5 years
wifey already had flat screen
before that, i didnt have a tv since my 27 inch magnavox i bought in 1998
it conked out in summer 2001 and i aint had a tv since
12700702, Ive had an LCD since the early 2000's but I have a tube in my room.
Posted by DavidHasselhoff, Fri Jan-16-15 11:45 AM
I only turn it on when I'm in bed and its usually watched for like 20 mins, so I cant really justify buying one for my room. If I was to get a really good deal or if my job starts letting me work from home again id buy a little 32 inch... that way it could double as a secondary monitor.

i still have a couple tube TVs, but it's been years since i've used one of them, and the other i only use if i have a rental dvd that won't play on one of my other players (for all the people who say they don't have an optical reader, i can play a dvd on 4 working devices).

this week i saw a pan & scan movie for the first time in years and was wondering if they always looked that awful or if it was an isolated case.
12700763, Depends on how the film was shot

If the film was shot 2.35:1 anamorphic, the pan and scan will be unwatchable.

it was (to both). i made myself watch, partly to see what pan & scan is again in this age, and it was such an atrocity. oddly enough the opening and end credits were letterboxed in widescreen so i guess they didn't bother or didn't know what to do, but i would have rather seen the whole movie in nonanamorphic that way.
12702145, they always letterbox the credits. Contract/credit obligations.

12700716, all tube/rear projection joints
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Fri Jan-16-15 11:52 AM
When I can no longer watch TV on them, I'll switch but even then my 55 inch rear projection tv can do 720p HD, so that one will stay in the living room.

We just copped my middle daughter another TV after her old one finally bit the dust (we had it for 14 years and got it used when we first picked it up). Found this nice ass Sony tube TV with an incredible picture and stereo sound. She's happy with it and watches all her lil shows on it via her streaming device.

Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Jan-16-15 12:16 PM
My nephew has one and we watched Love & Basketball in HD and that shit looked like an after school special. Looked like it was shot with a hand held camera.

Made me realize that too much clarity is a bad thing.

I will never forget the first time I saw Serena and Venus up close on a Plasma 60". You could see the yarn in their weaves....

too much detail is a bad thing.

12700976, This is the dumbest and greatest purchase of my adult life.
Posted by Lardlad95, Fri Jan-16-15 01:56 PM
Basically I have about 80% of an entire wall as my screen. The screen is like 8.5 ft by 6.5 ft, and that's only because I can't put the projector back far enough to cover the entire wall. Eventually I'd like to put in my room because I have a wall that's even bigger and enough space, but the kids like to use it so it's out in the front room.

I mainly use it to play Halo, but probably the best experience with it is watching Game of Thrones. When I saw the Watchers on the Wall from last season...man I almost shit myself it looked so epic.

And all the men and women merely players:

My bedroom TV is like 22" Goldstar that I had since the mid-90s when I left for college. I was pissed when my dad bought it: I thought it would be malfunctioning by second semester -- ha!

Even though I work at a cable network and deal with 16:9 aspect ratios all day, I can't see spending money to replace TVs that work fine.
