12698258, Underrated local specialties
Posted by John Forte, Wed Jan-14-15 10:47 AM
Alright, we shat on a bunch of sacred cows yesterday. Let's highlight local delicacies that might not be on the tourist's radar.
12698260, Chicago: Italian beef
Posted by John Forte, Wed Jan-14-15 10:49 AM
When people think about chicago-centric comfort food, they usually think about deep-dish or chicago style hot dogs, but the Italian beef sammich with giardinera is easily one of the best sammiches in the US.
12698315, how does Portillo's compare to other places?
Posted by makaveli, Wed Jan-14-15 11:17 AM
That's the only place Ive had them.
12698345, I don't know how the natives feel, but I think Portillos is solid
Posted by John Forte, Wed Jan-14-15 11:26 AM
Browns is better,. Almost every neighborhood shop is decent.
12698418, as long as it's not dipped. i don't like soggy bread.
Posted by earthseed, Wed Jan-14-15 11:52 AM
12698433, you crazy, the dipping is crucial

12698437, lol, man i can't do the soggy bread. give me some in a to go and i'll dip
Posted by earthseed, Wed Jan-14-15 11:58 AM
at each bite

but to get it dipped and the bread is just sitting in the juice, nope!
12698516, RE: Chicago: Turkey Chili...is this a thing in Chicago
Posted by bentagain, Wed Jan-14-15 12:19 PM
on a recent trip I noticed turkey chili was on damn near every menu

gave it a try

not bad

but it made me wonder, why? is this a chicago thing?
12699074, I think anyone who has set foot in Chicago knows about this though
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Wed Jan-14-15 05:12 PM
Now that Al's bullshit that is all over the country looks nasty as shyt, but yeah it's some real good Italian Beef. I like the pulled pork and similarly simmered beef sandwiches we got in Philly, but the Chicago ones have their own style that seems tough to duplicate.
12698269, Boston: North Shore roast beef sandwiches
Posted by Brew, Wed Jan-14-15 10:54 AM
I live here, have eaten them my entire life and still never got sick of them. Boston should have a bigger reputation for these things. Get it 3-way (cheese, mayo, bbq sauce) and you'll want 10 more.
12698281, Would Kelly's be an example of this?
Posted by John Forte, Wed Jan-14-15 10:59 AM
12698402, Kelly's isn't all that good
Posted by Mack, Wed Jan-14-15 11:48 AM
But Harrison's up in North Andover....now there's a sandwich.
12698708, Agreed. To answer the question...
Posted by Brew, Wed Jan-14-15 01:19 PM
Kelly's is definitely an "example" of North Shore roast beef and probably the most known name for tourists and people outside the city, but yea there are many better places for this style of roast beef. Harrison's is good, Giovanni's has a good one. Liberty Bell in Southie (which just closed, but I know they have a location elsewhere just not sure where) is excellent...etc. Brother's in Quincy is really good, too. Most of the mom and pop joints are the best places for this kind of beef. But Kelly's isn't bad, by any means. Just doesn't rank high on my list.
12698278, Chicago again: The Jibarito
Posted by John Forte, Wed Jan-14-15 10:58 AM
the Jibarito is a top-10 sammich, period. The only things I HAVE to eat whenever I go back to the Chi is a Jibarito.
12698313, Yes!
Posted by Hitokiri, Wed Jan-14-15 11:16 AM
I'm so mad that no place here has picked up on them yet.
We're so close to chi.
But... we don't have many puerto ricans.
12698357, yeah that joint was on smash. we got them in the Heights and brooklyn
Posted by T Reynolds, Wed Jan-14-15 11:29 AM

12699077, whoa, i am totally making this at home. i had a similar thing ...
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Wed Jan-14-15 05:13 PM
that was made with patacones (those funky little fried banana patty things) but i like plaintains so much more.

12698442, Theirs are pretty damn good.
Posted by Marbles, Wed Jan-14-15 11:59 AM

There used to be a spot in Ybor called Sula's that had my favorite Cuban. The Columbia makes a good one too.

Almost ANY local breakfast spot really...

DVS knows what's up with Bro. Juniper's lol, and just tried out City East Bagels last month and definitely will be going again soon, and Renee's Sandwich Shop downtown, has always been my spot for something quick and good.

big ass racks of ribs and shit like that. nice selection there.

temple has food trucks too but most of them suck. that crepe one run by the greek cats is fucking amazing though. so much food for $5 or less. you could be stuck on campus all day, eat one of those and be good from 10 AM to 10 PM.
12698388, Tampa - Deviled crabs
Posted by ThisIs_ATruthThang, Wed Jan-14-15 11:41 AM
After living in Tampa almost ten years I did not realize that deviled crabs were just a Tampa thing! Lol

Basically it's a breaded ball of crab meat, peppers, and spices. It's so damn good!! I usually get mine from a place called Brocato's, which is a well known sandwich spot.

Tampa really does have a great food.
12698436, I had no idea
Posted by Marbles, Wed Jan-14-15 11:58 AM

My folks have loved them for years. They're from Georgia but the old man was stationed in Tampa for a couple of years. I wonder if they learned to make them here?

And Tampa really does have great eating options
12698569, Me either until no one anywhere else knew about them and I Googled! lol

Posted by ThisIs_ATruthThang, Wed Jan-14-15 03:54 PM
I Googled and it says they originated in Tampa. Ybor city to be exact.
12699012, It's funny that Kingjerm said Savannah
Posted by Marbles, Wed Jan-14-15 04:21 PM

Because that's where my folks are from. They were born & raised there. They lived in Tampa later on in life. If I remember, I'll ask my Mom where she picked them up.

Although it wouldn't be crazy for something like that to migrate up the coast.

12698583, yeah malaysian jerky or ling kee on canal
Posted by T Reynolds, Wed Jan-14-15 12:42 PM
HK market is definitely nuts, I can spend half an hour in the sauce section alone

Still have not been to Prosperity, but I've been to a lot of the dim sum spots like Golden Unicorn, which is slept on, and Pho Grand
12698727, yeah prosperity is a little out of the way
Posted by teefiveten, Wed Jan-14-15 01:25 PM

not all spots are created equal

personally Trini Ali's on Fulton/Nostrand is aight to me and their doubles are trash

I like the Ali's on Utica in crown heights

then there's gloria's on nostrand in crown heights for roti

A&A bake and doubles on Nostrand and Macon

Rowe's on Fulton by Franklin is slept on

Peppa's Jerk on Flatbush is worth the trek

and Islands on Washington is decent and considering this weather and how hot their dining space upstairs is, this is a good move right now lol
