Very much related to the convos surrounding JF's media representations post and that Mindy Show critique
12697924, they actually screened it here in SD during the asian film festival
Posted by GirlChild, Tue Jan-13-15 09:15 PM
there's an NPR interview about that show as well
12697930, I posted a similar comment but I wonder if he's coppin pleas
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Tue Jan-13-15 09:22 PM
How genuine is this? Is he just trying to distance himself from it a bit now cause he sees/knows how watered down it is- and his fans won't approve?

Eddie is a hustler. He knew what signing a network tv deal meant.

Take the money, never have to run.
12698784, there's a part of me that feels the same as you, but

the end of the piece is what made me believe his gripes with the process

In the back of my mind I'm like we HAVE to start somewhere
In the end he came to understand that
There are barely any references if this show makes it on the map it'll only be the second blip in over a damn decade okay third
I like Sullivan and son

It'll be fine
It'll be something
Better than nothing and I'm here for it

i love what that MFer is doing all around. I was pissed when I went to NY last June and didn't hit up Boahaus
12697990, I'm cautious of the show, but I'm curious about Baohaus.

12699126, yo.....
Posted by Selah, Wed Jan-14-15 06:10 PM
this whole thing of appropriated oppression is type crazy to me

note to "them" (those that do.that.thing): your struggle doesn't have to be viewed through the lens of mine to be valid

you kinda end up diminishing (me) mine buy shoving yours into the mold trying to invoke what mine does

*sigh*

__________ AIN'T the new b/Black. it just ain't.

that's ok. yours can count too.

to the author of the article: EFF-YEW and your pseudo-clever little footnotes...

12699149, AND THEN he pretty much sells out at the end
Posted by Selah, Wed Jan-14-15 06:36 PM
too funny
12699320, WHAT
Posted by astralblak, Wed Jan-14-15 10:33 PM
.
12699198, Once you sell them your story. It isn't your story.
Posted by bignick, Wed Jan-14-15 07:54 PM
12699322, it sucks really. authors have a very hard time with this
Posted by astralblak, Wed Jan-14-15 10:37 PM
because one, few authors make GOOD cash off their books selling, so if your book or short story gets optioned for 3-6 years for anywhere from 20-60k how you gunna say no?

two, problem is once your agent signs off on the option the author has very little say so, if any, in how the material is presented in film or tv. Ursula le Guinn just wrote about this in Gawker in relation to how SyFy fucked her book up in terms of how she saw race.

An author some where is gunna have to fight this legally to set i precedent in a way, because right now, most stories will sound like Eddie's here
12699369, Fresh Off the Boat panel gets awkward (link)

i respect eddies hustle but something about him rubs me the wrong way

Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jan-15-15 09:03 AM
and after reading some of the OP's link, he sounds punchable too.
12699430, We have mutual friends who swear he's a real dude, but
Posted by John Forte, Thu Jan-15-15 08:30 AM
I find his whole steez irksome. There's the whole over-the-top cultural appropriation bit (he's not an urban Asian kid from NY or Cali). There's the privilege angle (family owned local chain of steakhouses, went to law school, flamed out in law, fam set him up with restaurant).

He plays up the child of immigrants thing, but he's the poster child for privilege.
12699924, urbanism is only allowed from LA or NY?
Posted by astralblak, Thu Jan-15-15 01:54 PM
what's he appropriating? hip hop? blackness?

seems exactly how most kids from multiracial periphery suburbs turnout

are kids from privileged background not allowed to have critiques of race, power, gender and privilege?

are kids from priv bg's not allowed to create "cutting edge" cultural productions?

i get you you're saying, but the specifics of what you addressed threw me off
12699944, Maybe I need to be less old
Posted by John Forte, Thu Jan-15-15 02:02 PM
but Huang's speech and mannerisms seem affected and overly black. I've met a lot of Asian hip-hop heads, and most of them don't come off like Huang (who grew up on a cul-de-sac in the Orlando suburbs). Those who do, tend to be products of inner city neighborhoods, making their personas seem more authentic...to me at least. There's a level of "street" in Huang's persona that comes off as artifice. I'm sure that's who he really is, but he appropriated that. He wasn't raised in it.

12699987, I agree and see what your saying
Posted by astralblak, Thu Jan-15-15 02:33 PM
but, again a place like Orlando, IN THE 90s, is producing Black, White, Latino, and Asian youth like Eddie

if he's appropriating "urban" Blackness, which he is, so are the Black kids in his community. It's a slippery theoretical slope to walk

yet for me, his piece and his work, is about expanding the racialized narrative of America beyond Black and White
12699998, This is why I don't hate him
Posted by John Forte, Thu Jan-15-15 02:41 PM

>yet for me, his piece and his work, is about expanding the
>racialized narrative of America beyond Black and White

I like what he tries to do, it's his persona I take issue with with. Now you've got me thinking; is there a such thing as Asian-American culture (or Korean-American, Chinese-American, whatever)? Moving beyond the black/white dichotomy, there's definitely a Mexican-American culture.
12700264, i completely agree with you
Posted by gusto, Thu Jan-15-15 08:10 PM
im not saying his experience is inauthentic, i feel its def a persona he puts on when its convenient.
as much as i dont like roy choi, i feel like he's a lot more real than huang.
12700270, damn you don't like Roy Choi?
Posted by astralblak, Thu Jan-15-15 08:28 PM
I mean it cant stand David Choe's stchtick but I love his art, so we all have some one I guess

Haha
