Unless you were a Black Studies major why would you be learning about Fanon and Padamore?

Funny thing is, I didn't learn not ONE thing about African-American history SPECIFICALLY at my HBCU
outside of my own schools history

should all HBCUs be required to have a Af-Am studies course in their syllabus?

90% of my courses were math or computer science

i learned about Fanon and Nkruma during my leisure reading in grad school

Posted by deejboram, Sat Jan-10-15 05:27 PM
none of them covered afro-caribbean history or pan-africanism that much.
why?
i guess they are of lil use in today's society
ppl get entire degrees in just U.S. Civil War history
you have too much information to cover in too short of time

being at an HBCU i've had instructors go a lil deeper and give the "black side" of historical events but it wasn't any Af-Am studies course
in Music 101 Professor Lott would give the black details that the textbook left out
in Health 101 Ms. Butler would go into stuff like the Tuskeegee Experiments but she would tell about stuff like that in off color jokes

my mom kept us out of school every June 19th and she schooled us (in a very surface level way) of what juneteenth meant

12694958, And yes, Black Studies should be a requirement at HBCU's

and in the public school system. We should also have more Freedom Schools and Community educational centers teaching this stuff. As a kid, I learned about Black History from my parents and my teachers at the Black History camp I attended every summer until I was 12.

It takes an entirely different meaning and is not too far off what racists bring up to justify their racism, "The black race just doesn't work hard, doesn't get it" etc.

It very well may have been taken out of context, and I doubt Kendrick understood what he was saying even if he meant it.

However, its fucking problematic since it follows a group think that many people, including many enlightened black folks, take too.

You're saying it to Billboard which has a mixed (mostly white) audience and you're mentioning looting. Very easy to take what he said as "Stop bitching and looting and blaming and take responsibility" if you want to take it that way.

For him to say that there are problems within the community and the community itself should focus on addressing them is hardly controversial. I mean that is true of any community.

some bullshit in Lamar's statement on the surface....

But black folks saying respect yourself ain't nothing new. Even when black people were getting brutalized by cops in the '60s, the Black Panthers were preaching self-respect....The problem here is that Lamar made it seem like cops beat us because we don't respect ourselves (They have harassed and beat us when have worn suits in a lot of cases)...And when it's being said to Billboard no less it looks sideways...

Still, it ain't enough for pressed ass Drake fans to be on some SEE THAT NIGGA AIN'T SHIT because your boy gets clowned on a daily...

If u got beef with Lamar's comments out of principle then I can dig it.

I also think he was trying to redirect the question a bit.. his concerns are with the hood... yes police brutality and murder is and issue..

but attempting to confront and eliminate nihilism, lack of hope and the culture of poverty has always been k dots "agenda"

Respectability politics wasn't ok then and it sure as hell ain't ok now.

BP done some great things.
NOI done some great things.
They've also done *a lot* of unfortunate shyt that (I hope) we have learned from.
Respectability is one of them.
How we treat women is another.
Hell, Black Panthers in the 60s would have issues w/ LBGTQ involvement in this current movement.
So, I wouldn't argue 'Well, back in the 60s...'

Further, to continue his unfortunate logic, he suggests that Tamir Rice didn't respect himself.
He suggests that Renisha McBride didn't respect herself or that if you don't respect yourself, you don't deserve life.

He's better off avoiding topics he knows little about.

What I'm curious about, however, is what the actual question was, though.

12694879, RE: I think we've learned a lot since the 60s.
Posted by double 0, Fri Jan-09-15 10:53 PM
He was asked about a specific situation...

Ferguson is not like Tamir Rice at all or Renisha or Eric Garner..

Also its clear he has a larger "agenda" for lack of better words.. so he is framing the question to serve that.. from "I" on he has been pretty on topic about what he's tryna do..
12694883, It doesn't excuse suggesting Michael Brown didn't respect himself.
Posted by MiQL, Fri Jan-09-15 11:04 PM
I don't know either way, but pretending that a cop is going to lower his weapon because someone respects themselves like He Got That Glow?

Nawl.

I'm curious what he was asked, but it still doesn't excuse that unfortunate answer.

>Ferguson is not like Tamir Rice at all or Renisha or Eric

True
Each case involving unarmed citizens *is* unique and suggesting all one has to do is respect themselves is going to fix that...?

>words.. so he is framing the question to serve that.. from "I"

Kendrick will not save anyone.. his music will not magically make people rich...

"Fuck The Police" did not reform the police..

"What's going On" did not save the world

He can only hope that (as Pac said) he can plant a seed in someone who will be motivated to do so. That motivation begins with believing in one's self..

People need to let Kendrick inspire... and let the true leaders people on the ground move the ball forward with police reform.

"During the past few years strong movements have developed among women and among homosexuals seeking their liberation. There has been some uncertainty about how to relate to these movements.

Whatever your personal opinions and your insecurities about homosexuality and the various liberation movements among homosexuals and women (and I speak of the homosexuals and women as oppressed groups), we should try to unite with them in a revolutionary fashion.

I say ”whatever your insecurities are” because as we very well know, sometimes our first instinct is to want to hit a homosexual in the mouth, and want a woman to be quiet. We want to hit a homosexual in the mouth because we are afraid that we might be homosexual; and we want to hit the women or shut her up because we are afraid that she might castrate us, or take the nuts that we might not have to start with.

We must gain security in ourselves and therefore have respect and feelings for all oppressed people. We must not use the racist attitude that the white racists use against our people because they are Black and poor. Many times the poorest white person is the most racist because he is afraid that he might lose something, or discover something that he does not have. So you’re some kind of a threat to him. This kind of psychology is in operation when we view oppressed people and we are angry with them because of their particular kind of behavior, or their particular kind of deviation from the established norm."

what.

I want us to do better for US... not so white people will respect us. At the end of slavery,
we were farming, owning land, and doing very well for ourselves. America deemed
it legal to torture us and run us off our land. Tell me Black Wall Street wasn't Black
people "respecting ourselves". They bombed the shit outta that city.
We can go back as far as the invasion of Africa where we had created civilization.
They don't respect us because they don't WANT to.
We will not ever gain collective white respect. We do better for ourselves so we can
protect ourselves from their terror. It's that simple.

I don't.

History shows us that it will make them turn up the gas on the fire and go into
extreme terrorist mode in an attempt to destroy whatever we build.

When we get our shit together THIS time, we gotta be prepared for that.

It is absolutely IMPERATIVE! that we understand that America has very direct
intentions of keeping Black people poor and subjugated. We must also understand why.

12695085, to defend Kendrick, Black People's self respect
Posted by Mr. ManC, Sat Jan-10-15 12:32 PM
needs to be defined and appraised. Clearly we all have "self respect" but we also have a 400 year history in this country where we have gone through an experience that influences our behavior and how we demonstrate our self respect.

Self respect shouldn't be and isn't required to keep someone from killing a person or group. However, self respect does and should activate a group to not only defend themselves and their "selfs" but be willing to offend others for the sake of liberation.

Knowing Kendrick's perspective and output, what I got from the statement was that any liberation we get isn't going to come from the oppressor, nor from actions made after the fact. We gotta be fully committed if we are going to break this cycle, and stop asking and start taking. Maybe we need to reevaluate the self respect we possess and push towards its 100% actualization, because given our history in this country, even more is required of us based on what we're up against.

12695087, who the fuck thought he was going to be a black leader?
Posted by MiracleRic, Sat Jan-10-15 12:34 PM
and as much of a problem as I have with "new black" and "respectability" lines of thought...

i don't always assume that the people thinking like that aren't aware of the systemic racism as an institution...

they want us to do better and be better and avoid that institution until things improve

while the kneejerkers are like "NO!!! THEY DID TO US!!! THEY HAVE TO FIX IT!"

and if they did...it would be a huge deal...maybe

cause maybe they'd enforce more petty crimes in orgs or blue collars just so they can racially equalize the prison industrial complex to the burbs and good neighborhoods

people are so resistant to change though...when you belong to a group...it's sometimes ok to think "we need to do better" without thinking about the way the system is rigged

it's a very churchy way of thinking too...

you don't question God (or authority), u build up your congregation...

i don't agree with that but i don't see the harm in trying to balance the 2 and if you haven't done the research or don't have the expertise to challenge or influence "authority" go ahead and focus on whatever else u do feel capable of addressing or are familiar with

I think it's hilarious how people talk about how she speaks her mind...just bc they agree with her Freshman Black Studies class rants...

I hate when conservative rednecks speak their mind

I can't really think of an artist as genuine as KL and even though she annoys me A Banks either...but i know which one is an asshole in their approach

Q-tip tried a nicer approach and people called it "condescending/patronizing"...she's trying it with unhinged attacks with minimal facts and maximum emotion...

nobody is willing to make the first change

Quite possibly.
12695468, again, I dont think she's homophobic
Posted by atruhead, Sun Jan-11-15 12:49 PM
she's 23 (not really an excuse, but she has growing to do)
she's from Harlem (not really an excuse but look at how Camron was well into his 30s)

i think she was trying to hurt Perez Hilton deeply because she felt attacked, there's a difference between that and having a general distaste for the gay community
12695355, So that makes all the hateful shit she says ok?
Posted by gumz, Sat Jan-10-15 11:57 PM
she responds to people with shit like "I hope your dad molests you". How can you take someone who says shit like that seriously?

On the surface I'd disagree with what she's saying about being owed something because although a lot of folks feel they're owed something-- not sure if she was going the "owed" reparations route with that or not.

Banks has to pick her battles better than this. Her hate towards Iggy comes across as bitter and jealous to an extent.
12695188, to an extent?
Posted by sixteenstone, Sat Jan-10-15 03:48 PM
even if she's right, that's fairly obvious which undermines a lot of her credibility pertaining to Iggy.
Which is why I feel she's the wrong person to be the representative of the subject.

... It comes across as patronizing now because she earned recognition for her artistry.

Who's another person that could speak on this issue without patronizing Iggy or coming across as jealous like Azealia?

the only difference is that it aint always so public and instant a pushback...

maybe i was just a respectful ass youngin and this social media shit just gives folks a chance to hide physically from that pushback lol

twitter ruined a lot of people for me. I long for the days when all you knew about artists was their crafts.
You didn't know their every thoughts. The closest you could get to them was posters, awards shows, movies, and music videos.
You still had an imagination of what their personality was outside of their music/acting. I was okay with that.

12695371, Honest, agenda-free question: have I heard an Azealia Banks song?
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Jan-11-15 02:36 AM
I fully admit that I am somewhat out of the loop.

I've heard plenty of everyone she has gone after on Twitter. But I am unclear as to if I'm familiar with her, outside of her aggression towards popular acts online.

(Not that this discredits her opinion at all-- it may be merely a coincidence that every time she gets my attention, it's due to a new Twitter beef with a popular musician instead of for her own music. I read the news more than I seek out contemporary new acts. Just asking whether she's popular for her artistic accomplishment, or if she's more popular for stuff like this.)

12695765, What Kendrick said is cliched & lacked perspective
Posted by The Letter L, Mon Jan-12-15 02:52 AM
Its like when people bring up black on black crime as if its only unique to black folks
When in reality violence is common in all communities & nations regardless of race.

As many have pointed out, respecting or disrespecting yourself has nothing to do with racism
That’s what makes it racism in the first place – that you’re being treated one way regardless of how you actually behave.

The notion that blacks need to love & respect themselves isnt unique to the black experience either
All people need to love & respect themselves, blacks arent the only ones dealing with some form of self-hate

I say all of this because too many blacks buy into these cliched narratives which are true,
but they mislead you to believe that the problem is you & if you fix these problems everything else will fall in line

No, the problem is being enslaved & being treated inhumane for hundreds of years,
The problem is losing culture & history,
The problem is assimilating to a foreign way of life,
The problem is trying to prosper in a foreign land amongst a people & government that views you less than equal

In short, the problem is the oppressor & his infrastructure of institutionalized racism

Always has & always will be

Its like that line from the Usual Suspects:
"The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist."

And thats exactly whats going on
The oppressor has flipped the narrative & got blacks believing theyre the cause of their own misery

Its some wickedly brilliant pimp shit
12695900, I can't tell the difference between Banks and Lupe
