Exclusive: Bill Cosby Co-Star Tony Winner Phylicia Rashad Speaks Out for First Time, Defends Her Friend

by Roger Friedman - January 6, 2015 11:25 pm

http://www.showbiz411.com/2015/01/06/exclusive-bill-cosby-co-star-tony-winner-phylicia-rashad-speaks-out-for-first-time-defends-her-friend

EXCLUSIVE It was just happenstance: I ran into Tony winner Phylicia Rashad today at Paramount’s super elegant lunch for the movie “Selma” at the Metropolitan Club. Rashad co-starred with Bill Cosby for 12 years as his TV wife– first on “The Cosby Show” and then on its sequel “Cosby” featuring Madeline Kahn. She will always be Claire Huxtable, wife of Dr. Cliff, and mother of the Huxtable family.

No one knows Cosby better than the soft spoken, smart, articulate Rashad, for whom I have a lot of respect. So far she has not said a word about the scandal that has engulfed Cosby and is systematically destroying his 50 year career and reputation.

So far.

Now, as the extraordinary “Selma” lunch– which featured a brilliant performance by Common and John Legend of their theme song, “Glory”– Rashad and I had a talk about Cosby. No less than Harry Belafonte and Ruben Santiago Hudson were hovering above us as we chatted. Let’s make something clear. Rashad, who is one of our greatest stage actresses, has kept quiet, didn’t seek me out, and even said “I don’t want to become part of the public debate.”

But knowing this she did say to me “I love him” about Bill Cosby. She stands defiantly behind him. She told me that in the years she’s known him, she has never seen the behavior alleged by the women who say they were drugged and raped, or sexually harassed.

“Forget these women,” Rashad said. “What you’re seeing is the destruction of a legacy. And I think it’s orchestrated. I don’t know why or who’s doing it, but it’s the legacy. And it’s a legacy that is so important to the culture.”

Rashad dismisses claims from both Beverly Johnson and Janice Dickinson. “Oh, please,” she said when their names came up. She also is quick to defend Camille Cosby. “This is a tough woman, a smart woman,” she told me. “She’s no pushover.” There is no question, Rashad said, that Camille Cosby has not been complicit or looked the other way as her husband terrorized women for the last 50 years.

She said, “Someone is determined to keep Bill Cosby off TV,” alluding to people other than the women. “And it’s worked. All his contracts have been cancelled.”

We talked more about the legacy of The Cosby Show. “This show represented America to the outside world. This was the American family. And now you’re seeing it being destroyed. Why?”

She said Cosby himself is probably too proud to raise a defense. I countered that his silence reminded me of how Jerry Lewis reacted whe, after 50 years. the Muscular Dystrophy Association treated him like dirt. He refused to fight back. To quote a popular song from the 70s: “If you don’t know me by now, you will never never know me.”

So what to do about Cosby’s accusers? Rashad feels strongly that some other force is at play– for some reason, Cosby’s great strides in education, as well as show business, are being ruined so that new generations will only remember him by this scandal. And what about a defense from the man himself? “If he spoke now, what do you think the media would do with it?” Rashad asked. And let’s face it, she’s right about that.

1. No one had to "try" to keep Bill Cosby off of TV. The effort was in trying to put him back on before this all broke.

2. Her attitude towards the women is, at absolute best, reprehensible. At worst, it's a lot of other words.

3. I know Cosby did a lot for the image of Black people on television, but if they really wanted to destroy a legacy and had their choice, why not pick easier targets (Will Smith or Tyler Perry for example)?

4. What sort of James Bond ass conspiracy subplot would have to be in action for all of this to be orchestrated? Is this a 20-year-takedown plan? Is Hannibal Burress (who, mind you, is far from the only Black comedian to tell Bill Cosby assault jokes) a secret pawn?

I mean, she is about to start that run of Arsenic and Old Lace with her sis... I can't see that being affected.

Frankly, I expect black media (and especially Black Twitter) to go at her the hardest. Janice Dickinson will probably make another appearance on ET or Nancy Grace with her latest incoherent and contradictory statement. Beverly Johnson will probably respond too... which is good for her, because it's more pub for her upcoming memoir.

Like the flip side of Bev Johnson and how she was the perfect victim in the sense that she already had fame and fortune so folks figured she was most probably telling the truth because that incentive was removed unlike the 16 other ladies...

With Ms Rashad defending him she doesn't have anything to gain. It's not like Cosby reunions are paying for five star vacations.

I know she gets money from reruns but her speaking out isn't going to affect that.

She's the perfect person to defend him and might be the one thing that turns this around becssue who doesn't want to belieb America's mom?
12691796, Why do people keep calling Bev Johnson the perfect victim?

12691867, yes, I can.

But no need to go to those lengths. It's ultimately not productive for either of us.

(And mind you: I'm not saying it's your favorite arrow *only* with regard to this particular case. You employ it quite frequently. But that's okay... it's your thang, and we all got a thang. We still family.)

it's cool - i know what i've posted. and i haven't brought up this misogyny angle as related to the Cosby story. if i had you'd be able to find it. and if you do find it i'll admit i'm wrong here - especially b/c it'll give me another chance to be right about how typically ppl rely on misogyny in defending Cosby.

and if i bring up misogyny in other discussions it's b/c, you know, misogyny is a pretty common thing. LOL. it occurs fairly regularly and has a place in many discussions. so, yes...i tend to talk about it.
12691887, In that case, I shall get back to you later.

And if I find that I am wrong, I too will offer you sincere apologies.

Question, though: Does have it have to *only* with regard to the Cosby story?

Actually.... wait a minute. Why am I even arguing with you over misogyny specifically? I meant that the *strawman argument* in general was your weapon of choice.

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Jan-07-15 10:18 AM
and his shitty website. Maybe the writer is a big time hollywood journalist, I don't know, but I do note that he was a long time Fox News Writer.

If true though I can understand that she probably believes what she is saying.

There is a fallacy of a defense to say "X can't be a a molester or a predator because he never did anything to me". Predators are good at picking their targets and living a double life.

I suspect that she may have said something off the record to this guy and he went and printed it. I bet she will retract or say the story is untrue.

>the nail in the coffin for me was Patton Oswalt saying Cosby's
>dirt was well known

What I got from what he said was that people knew that there had been *accusations* against Cosby--which the whole fucking world should have known if they had paid attention to the news since 2006.

Oswalt stopped short of saying that comedians--he or Bobcat Goldthwait or whoever--literally knew about unreported acts Cosby had committed.

But of course, the media reported it with their slant to make it sound like Oswalt really had some secret juice that nobody else knew.
12691984, This is definitely orchestrated...

I'll have to dig through a bunch of episodes to find it, but I'm pretty sure he told that joke because Lew Dix had brought up "Dr. Cosby" (who I believe was his first boss in the industry) for like the eigtieth time on the show.

Truth be told, they aired a lot of dirty laundry on that show...Tommy Davidson being on smack, that Terry Crews incident with the 500 lbs on the bench press, Plies hiding in the bathroom when real gangstas showed up to the video set, etc.
12693437, I think the catalyst is that Cosby was on the publicity circuit
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Thu Jan-08-15 12:08 PM
New Biography. New Stand-up tour. New show in the work.

It's kind of what prompted HB to make the joke in the first place.

When these allegations came up the first time around BC was at the height of his career and had the power to squash it. He granted the tabloid an exclusive to change the story. He settled with his main accuser and their was no social media.

Then he sort of went away and because he wasn't in the public eye the allegations weren't big news stories.

Now that he resurfaced on the publicity circuit he is not at the height of his power, and their is social media that can run with stories the mainstream media would not.

There is a perfectly reasonable logical explanation that does not involve a conspiracy.

Yup.

I didn't even see it as a full-fledged defense, just cited how the situation is a shame no matter what occurred or didn't, she doesn't know what happened but stating that she herself never saw anything untoward, how she hasn't spoken to her TV dad in quite some time but vouching for the legacy of what was accomplished and wanting to separate that from the accusations, etc.

Overall, she comes off like a well-adjusted, intelligent young woman with a high degree of class/integrity.

And when I think about it I guess she always has in the dribs and drabs in which I've seen her publicly post-Cosby, on these talk shows or maybe on a prime time game shows like Apprentice or Fear Factor over the years.

Looks good too.

Because the past allegations and the settlements are there but, as far as the recent allegations go, there isn't anyone outside of the accusers corroborating what Janice and Beverly said.

This is where Cosby's silence works against him. He takes the road of letting the lawyers handle it because that's the smarter choice...but I can't clap to that. When there's too much silence, people tend to fill in the blanks with whatever they want.

12692345, Kraft Foods is behind conspiracy the smear Cosby
Posted by Chanson, Wed Jan-07-15 02:37 PM
In 1989, at the height of The Cosby Show's ratings, Bill Cosby renegotiated his endorsement contract with Jell-O, then owned by General Foods. A stipulation of the contract stated that if after 25 years Cosby still had a number one rated television show on a major network (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX) General Foods would pay Cosby a lump sum of $500 million.

Cosby was largely responsible for saving Jell-O when, in 1974, he began being featured in their advertising campaigns. Sales of Jell-O products later skyrocketed as The Cosby Show rose to prominence, producing record profits for General Foods and leading to their acquisition by Phillip Morris and their eventual merger with Kraft Foods in 1990.

Cosby was primed to cash in on his $500 million payday when NBC announced in 2014 that the network would produce a new sitcom starring Cosby. NBC planned to throw a large amount of money into the marketing and promotion of the show, ensuring that it would be a success. Their other sitcoms were floundering in the ratings and the network, needing a hit show, banked on cashing in on the goodwill The Cosby Show generated decades earlier. Cosby himself was in for a major comeback in 2015.

Kraft CEO, Tony Vernon, stated he would honor the 1989 contract but was mysteriously forced to retire just as the accusations against Cosby began to pile up in late 2014. In December of 2014 John T. Cahill was named the new CEO of Kraft. Cahill is notorious for his hardnosed, illegal business practices and his hatred of The Cosby Show. Cahill just doesn't understand how Sondra and Denise looked biracial and were light-skinned yet Theo, Vanessa and Rudy were brown-skinned. He also hated the additions of Olivia and Cousin Pam. "Get the fuck out of here with this Cousin Pam shit" Cahill was known to scream at his television screen during The Cosby Show's final season. If you've read this far I hate you and hope you get a paper cut today.

It seems most heard it as "fuck these hoes and their rape accusations".
i just saw it as an attempt, albeit a poor one, to separate the rape allegations from the frenzied dismantling of the cosby "brand" like stores not selling dvds and reruns getting cancelled and shows getting canned.

I think she expected the Cosby brand to survive much like MJ's did (and he's seen more actual court than Cosby no?).

and if i didn't understand quite well exactly how terrible it is financially and emotionally and mentally to be a plaintiff in a lawsuit - especially a major one. these accusers are about to be put through a wringer like they've never been before. their entire lives will be opened for public scrutiny. especially their sexual histories. any lies they've ever told will be revealed. any dirty dalliances will be aired. usually to sustain the fight ppl have to be interested in more than money. b/c the money is usually not worth the drama of a lawsuit. especially against lawyers like the ones Cos will hire if he chooses to defend the suit. they will and should go for blood. and at the end the plaintiffs likely won't be paid much. and they'll have to pay taxes. and pay their lawyers. and go through the drama of collecting the money, which is a huge burden.

12693130, She could speak to Cosby's character per her experiences
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Thu Jan-08-15 01:18 AM
with him..

no question...

she can't really speak to the validity of any of these accusations, because the majority occurred prior to her working with and knowing Cosby..

I could have friends that could speak to my character, but they couldn't speak to things that happened before they even met me....

also...people should remember that there is a motivation for people who were on the Cosby show to portray Bill in the best light..

for a couple reasons..

one with all of this the show has been taking off of reruns...and that's money that isn't going to the actors who were on the show....

and second...she mentioned the term legacy....Cosby's legacy certainly extends to that show..and what that show meant for Black people and America in genral...Those who were a part of that show I'm sure would feel hesitant to aid in anything that would taint the shows legacy...I could imagine that must be a very difficult position to be in for them...
12693157, I have believed from the jump it was a conspiracy...

People be quick to say "Why are they coming out now? They not getting paid or asking for money?"

That we know of, I could see them getting something under the table, way under to help defamae this man's legacy. He very well could be a rapist and drugged these women but for it to come out with such force and the timing, just is soooo questionable. Why now?

And then no more Cosby Show? I mean the show is a staple of American TV and still so relevant today. Seems like somebody aint like that and caused this all to happen.

Wish folk could separate the art from the artist.

12693441, It's because dude was on the publicity circuit relaunching his career.

New Biography. New Yorker feature.

Comedian, who has been accused of drugging and sexually assaulting women, wins applause with warning at comedy show

Friday 9 January 2015 00.22 EST

Bill Cosby jokingly warned a woman in the audience during a show in Canada on Thursday night to be careful drinking around him.

Cosby made the remark at his second performance in a row after a string of cancellations that followed sexual assault allegations from more than 15 women.

Some of the women accused Cosby of drugging them by slipping something in their drinks before he assaulted them.

A woman who got up from one of the front rows and walked past the stage was asked by Cosby where she was going. When she answered that she was going to the lobby to grab a drink, Cosby responded: “You have to be careful about drinking around me.” The remark was met with loud applause.

A few minutes later a heckler yelled at Cosby that he was a rapist.

Cosby stood up as the crowd started to boo the man and asked them not to respond. “No, no, stop,” he said, waving his hands.

The man was removed from the theatre by a police officer while one member of the audience yelled “we love you” to Cosby.

Cosby later addressed the disruption, the first at a show since the allegations surfaced in a statement.

“Dear fans: one outburst but over 2,600 loyal, patient and courageous fans enjoyed the most wonderful medicine that exist for humankind. Laughter. I thank you, the theatre staff (Budweiser Gardens), the event organisers and the London, ON community for your continued honour and support. I’m far from finished,” Cosby said in the statement issued by his publicist following the show.

Cosby, 77, is also scheduled to appear at the Hamilton Place theatre in Hamilton on Friday and in a number of shows throughout the US over the next few months, including two shows in Denver on 17 January.

The comedian, who starred as Dr Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show from 1984 to 1992, and was viewed by many as “America’s Dad”, has never been charged in connection with any of the sexual assault allegations.

A 2005 lawsuit by a Pennsylvania woman was settled before it went to trial, and he is being sued by a woman who claims he molested her in 1974 and by three other women who allege they were defamed by the comedian when his representatives denied some of the allegations.
12694349, Why should they panic over that?

If he truly believes the allegations made about him are ridiculous and he (lightly) ridicules them, what exactly is the reason to clutch pearls?

Because it shows he's not taking any of these allegations seriously....

It shows that he is detached from the situation.

And really, it's just not smart for someone (Mr. Cosby) who has made it a point to not make ANY reference to the rape allegations due to legal concerns....

12694402, Much ado about little.

The people who have their monocles popping out their eyes over a "RAPE JOKE!" (tm) are the same people who 24 hours earlier were tweeting #JeSuisCharlie and changing their social media avatars to Charlie Hebdo's shitty cartoons, talking about "We should be able to make jokes about ANYTHING! That's what satire's about!"
12695012, gtfoh..Cosby is joking about something he is accused of doing irl.

I'm trying to find a way to merge this Claire Huxtable thread
with the ones I made that asked:

1. Why Claire ain't spoke up yet but Debbie has?
2. Why Theo aint spoke up yet?
3. Rudy DID speak up and got fired from The Apprentice behind it

I love my mods
I'm just trying to figure out a way to combine all my thoughts from them other three posts into this one
Can yall do that?
Merge posts that is
they do it on my other forums
12694407, wasn't The Apprentice taped before the scandal broke?
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Jan-09-15 02:01 PM
12694411, Because what would speaking up do?
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Fri Jan-09-15 02:02 PM
You can already see that anybody who speaks and says anything short of "Yes, he's a monster!" is gonna get attacked by the public anyway.

Like Tavis said, this is Bill's fight and he's gonna have to handle it himself. The most any of his costars can say is "He never raped me personally and I never saw him rape anybody on set" (which is basically what Keshia said).

But more than that... seeing as Bill has chosen not to respond to the charges himself, there's a chance that he could have told his friends and family not to say anything either. The only reason Debbie and Keshia spoke was because they were in the middle of media tours for projects they were involved in and there was no way to escape the questions.
12695019, I wounder who else will come out in support.
