12687353, Bourbon Drinkers: NYE Suggestions?
Posted by CRichMonkey, Tue Dec-30-14 04:47 PM
Yo, I'm looking for a good quality bourbon to bring to an NYE party tomorrow.

I need something that's good with a couple of ice cubes or in a Manhattan.

I'm tempted to just go with some Buffalo Trace or maybe Larceny, but what are y'all sippin' on?

12687355, What price point are you trying to hit?
Posted by Overqualified, Tue Dec-30-14 04:52 PM
I like Eagles Rare, Buffalo Trace is good too. James Pepper 1776 on that list as well. Someone I know puts out a small batch, Breckenridge that's been a hit if they sell it where you are. One of my co-workers put me on to Sam Houston which I find comparable in taste to a Makers Mark, but it's only around $20 a bottle.
12687359, Can I get Breckenridge in Chicago?

12687357, Bulleit if you're cheap. Blanton's if you're trying to impress somebody

12687358, Just got my bro a bottle of Basil Haydens. It was pretty damn good.
Posted by Lardlad95, Tue Dec-30-14 04:55 PM
I prefer scotch to bourbon though so my opinion ain't 100% trustworthy.

12687360, Basil Hayden's & Woodford are good sippers...

But I don't know how well they mix.

12687391, OGD 100 proof is a damned good bourbon for the price
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Tue Dec-30-14 05:29 PM
Now that you aren't young and strictly drinking it to get fucked up, you can sit back and appreciate it's character.

OGD 114 is much better than 100. I like 100 to unwind after a long day and 114 for special occasions.

NOTHIIIING!!!
12687399, if you're mixing, buy Evan Williams.
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Tue Dec-30-14 05:37 PM
Anything better than that doesn't deserve that kind of abuse.

12687403, yuk! Evan Williams = battery acid. You'd be abusing your pallet.
Posted by Somnus, Tue Dec-30-14 05:45 PM
12687419, LOL, you're abusing decent bourbon by mixing it!
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Tue Dec-30-14 06:15 PM
Evan is marginally drinkable, which is why I only recommend it for mixed drinks.

Evan and Coke for the unrefined works. Whiskey sour with Evan ain't all that bad.

If you're like me and usually drink your bourbon neat or with a water, then Evan is unacceptable.

Posted by John Forte, Tue Dec-30-14 05:18 PM
Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace or Blantons...none of the Sazerac brands.
12687408, What shortage, @ Buffalo Trace?
Posted by Cam, Tue Dec-30-14 06:01 PM
I didn't realize it extended beyond Van Winkle. I feel like they saw the frenzy over the supposed robbery, and applied the same move with their other premium bottles (not that they see a cut). There's a Hasidic shop by me that has a supply of all the Pappy's, he's selling Old Rip 10yr for $350 and the 23yr for $1800...and said he's had buyers.

Posted by Cam, Tue Dec-30-14 06:17 PM
That seems like a manufactured shortage too. Except for the 12yr, I never see that stuff anymore.

12695325, At least half of those are really easy to find.

The 20 years are tricky but some are available in less-old vintages (e.g., Elijah Craig).

To sip-
Knob Creek, their Single Barrel Reserve specifically (which is my fav from the Jim Beam family, including Bookers and Basil Haden)

For a cocktail-
The best quality inexpensive Bourbon that I like, and originated by the fine folks who brought you Pappy, good old Rebel Yell, or even Rebel Reserve.
http://rebelyellbourbon.com/
It's my utility wheated Bourbon, I never don't have some in a decanter next to my good shit. It may not be as complex as Makers (which I don't like to mix with) or the 12 yr Pap, but it's perfect for mixing.
12687394, Knob creek has a Rye I want to try.

12687405, Because of its versatility, I'd go with Bulleit
Posted by stankpalmer, Tue Dec-30-14 05:54 PM
It's good enough to drink on its own, but cheap enough to not feel guilty about mixing.

And if you're drinking with non-drinkers, they'll be intrigued with the bottle.
12687412, for sipping: Woodford or Eagle Rare
Posted by teefiveten, Tue Dec-30-14 06:04 PM
do not sleep on Eagle Rare
12687433, Four Roses Small Batch
Posted by third_i_vision, Tue Dec-30-14 06:43 PM
Affordable and damn good.

We cracked open a bottle on Friday with a few friends…there might be a couple shots left at the most.

Also got our usual gift of Angel's Envy for the holidays. I guess you can't technically call it bourbon since it's aged in port wine/rum (for the rye) barrels, but it's always a hit at our place. I think I heard it was marketed towards female drinkers, but I'm never turning that stuff down if it's offered up neat.

Of course Woodford is always worth bringing. Low-key, that might be what I'd choose to sip if I could only have one bourbon for the rest of my life. The texture is fucking perfect.
12687442, dude, it's nye GO WIT THA BUBBLAAAYYYY *checks my avi*

i got upgraded a couple bottles on friday so these four will be saved for MLK day and Juneteenth

Hudson Manhattan Whiskey is nice as well.

Is there particular a version you suggest?
I must have had a bad bottle.
12690247, Actually I'm wrong, I'm thinking about some brand from Indiana
Posted by Cam, Mon Jan-05-15 02:27 PM
They also use a wine bottle container and the name is similar. I can't think of it now.
12690249, Willet's?
Posted by teefiveten, Mon Jan-05-15 02:28 PM
i like their rye. it's burny but tastes good in manhattans
12690383, No, it's a new company and has a similar name and design to Noah's Mill

12687876, Eagle rare is harder to find
Posted by teefiveten, Wed Dec-31-14 11:59 AM
I was getting bottles for less than 30 bucks!
Now no stores carry like that
I've seen it pop up more at bars which is good

i get salty seeing how much i have to drop for woodford now
used to be slightly under 30 on sale
now it's 40 :(

i've been gifted with 2 scotches (a high quality blended islay which i thought i'd hate) and a Dalmore (not an islay but yumsies nonetheless. not peaty but coffee/chocolate like)

but i miss bourbon. i dont even have a 'meh' bottle around for drinks and cooking, which i used to do. i should at least remedy that
12687988, I'm driving down to Delaware after work

I also got a fifth of Woodford for 24 dollars. It was on sale. Regularly 30.

Also got a Basil Hayden's fifth for 31.99, reg price.

Jim Beam Black. It's cheap as fuck, not rot gut and a generally well-regarded sipper or mixer. Not terribly complex but it's a good bottl for a party. 14.00 for a fifth here and it's winning awards.

Wild Turkey 101. I can get it between 17-20 here. Strong proof but smooth, sweet, spicy. Good neat, on the rocks or mixed in a old fashioned.
12695320, Woodford Reserve, Blanton's, Bookers, Bakers, Old Well 107, Eagle Rare...
Posted by bibblegolf, Sat Jan-10-15 10:49 PM
Bulliet, & Evan Williams Single to name a few I rotate through..
12695323, Late but Bulleit and Elijah Craig 12 Year are both great mixers
Posted by J305, Sat Jan-10-15 11:01 PM
Knob Creek too although it has a bit of a brand-specific taste (think Ketel One or Goose) which some people may not like.

Four Roses is OK. I don't like Buffalo Trace at all, I think it tastes cheap for the price point.
12695363, enjoyed some angels envy over the holidays
Posted by dba_BAD, Sun Jan-11-15 12:57 AM
eagle rare is great, as mentioned. i think it might be the best bourbon value i can think of actually

i think woodford is overrated

grew up on turkey so itll always have a soft spot
