12682868, I'm watching "Poetic Justice" for the first time ever.

Thanks to Netflix HD.

I was told - from multiple sources - that this movie was "terrible". It's rough, yeah, but it's not too awful. Worst thing about it are the terribly obtuse needle drops (I.e. "Zener Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer") as Janet Jackson mopes about her house alone.

Looks really nice in HD. Like full restoration nice.
12682869, Frankly my dear I dont give a fuck!

Posted by b.Touch, Tue Dec-23-14 01:42 AM
She was definitely uneven, but _that_ terrible she was not.

12682887, Janet is the weakest link in the movie.

Which is a problem, because it's her story. I don't know where I heard/read it, but I agreed with whomever said if you put Regina King in the lead, you have a much better movie, because Regina's much more believable in the role. And you're right, it wasn't a bad movie, just a good movie with a bad lead actress. And Tupac was superb as the total babyface (not the singer), with Joe Torry... well... Joe Torrying.

And I gave/give John major points for making, at the time, an ambitious second movie, especially since everyone wanted More Boyz in the Hood and he decided to go left and give us this... at the time, I remember Zoo Town niggas clowning the movie on opening night, mainly because of the Boyz thing, and also because most of them didn't know who Maya Angelou was, and also didn't have any sort of appreciation for poetry, so when those voiced-over poems dropped in, lots of the audience groaned and laughed.

...it's kinda like alot of black romance movies in that era...i was good after one watch and i appreciated it for what it was...
12682948, Quick trivia note, re: Q-Tip
Posted by ZooTown74, Tue Dec-23-14 09:20 AM
Q-Tip had a small role in Poetic Justice, playing the boyfriend of Janet's who is killed in the opening scene and sends Justice into a funk.

What was his character's name? Markell.

Markell was a reference to Markell Riley, who is the brother of Teddy Riley and was also in the group Wreckx-N-Effect.

IIRC, Wreckx-N-Effect had beef with A Tribe Called Quest, due to the lyric "Strictly hardcore tracks, not a New Jack Swing," which is what Teddy (and by extension Wreckx-N-Effect) was known for. This supposedly led to a confrontation in which Q-Tip got a black eye. So, "in response," his character Markell gets blasted.

BTW, this was on the heels of the "We Want Eazy" t-shirt wearing crackhead catching a beatdown by Ice Cube and his crew in Boyz in the Hood.

12683747, This, Baby Boy and Four Brothers=3 highly rewatchable Singleton flicks
Posted by Bombastic, Tue Dec-23-14 11:56 PM
All of whose obvious flaws and moments of cringeworthiness make it tough to argue for them being objectively 'good films" but ones I can sit thru any rainy afternoon or lazy evening that I stumble upon them on cable, particularly if I'm with someone who hasnt seen them before.

The big body American sedans sliding around during the snowy car chase?

Black people playing hockey, and doing it well?

Mark Wahlberg pulls a piece and people's only response is to start booing because he took the ball?

Yep.
