12678068, A fashion+class vs. youth culture question
Posted by double negative, Wed Dec-17-14 10:57 AM
im doing some research for a mock up im working on

and

well

just look:

http://www.barneys.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-BNY-Site/default/Search-Show?cgid=f14trend-mpunk

its a look book barney has put together called "the new punk"

what im trying to work out is who wears this shit? i grew up with punks and they were poor, very poor people. so then the bend is towards youth but what sort of young person has money to drop $1800 on boots?

I guess the only logical answer is rich kids but then I thought rich kids play it extremely straight so I am at a loss.

12678088, not all rich kids are preppy

plenty of them dress like this.
12678114, which is also the logical answer.....but damn.

12678131, i happen to know a bunch of them

they are international & go to various art schools here in London. (international = higher fees. plus cost of living in this expensive fucking city). they all have extremely cool & well decorated flats in central but just edgy-enough locations. they have lots of expensive equipment, cameras, etc. they do cool artsy hipster stuff while hanging out in overpriced coffee shops & bars. they get all the good internships in the arts & media because they can afford not to work. this is how they dress. their rich parents are elsewhere but still footing the bill.
12678162, This is true

I met a lot of ppl going to art school in NYC like this.

But you have also a lot of the teachers (Kim Gordon, sonic youth aged) who still dress sort of punk and bc they have $400 month rent controlled apts in the east village or bldgs they bought in the 70s in soho, can afford to drop $1800 on a pair of boots.
12678167, yep

12678121, H&M could construct a similar look book
Posted by southphillyman, Wed Dec-17-14 11:16 AM
the items might only last a month
it's a look, budget accordingly
don't know what constitutes "punk" per say but i've noticed that black and slim is really popular across a gang of demo's now days

this is a strange assumption

12678140, The new creative class, doesn't have to dress a certain
Posted by ndibs, Wed Dec-17-14 11:24 AM
Way for work. Also a lot of fashionistas wear a lot of high and low. A lot of $3 thrift store finds with more expensive pieces for a few hundred mixed in that they wear forever.
12678163, theres the jet set
Posted by lfresh, Wed Dec-17-14 11:34 AM
the celeb set
the rich NY set
the diplomat kids set
the rich asian cutting edge set

then the middle class aiming towards rich and cutting edge set

then the poor/middle class NYrs copping freebies on the regular

also its a mix and match of clothes
you dont buy everything
but if a particular piece is perfect you splurge

Whoever can also afford an iphone6 .. a macbook pro etc..

Priced accordingly this isnt crazy for someone who has an iphone 6 to cop an off-white moto..

Sure there are mad rich kids doing it but I also know a lot of folks who would rather live in a slightly shittier apt so they can cop the shit they want
