12678011, Do You Drink In Front Of Your Kids?
Posted by daryloneal, Wed Dec-17-14 10:30 AM
Admittedly, I don't hang out a whole lot. I work. A Lot.

So a happy hour here or there, maybe. A drink with a friend here or there.

A couple of Sundays ago, a buddy of mine called me last minute saying "Hey, we're having so friends over to watch the game. Feel free to bring the family".

I said "Alright cool, I'll come and bring the kids."

So I get there, and everything is cool. Small gathering, a couple of other couples and their kids. Good fun.

Then I see that for every touchdown, they were taking shots.

I didn't participate.

Not judging anybody, but that just isn't my thing.

1 - I'm not a big drinker like that.

2 - When I do drink, I don't do it in front of my kids.

No defined reason why. Just doesn't feel right to me.

There were other activities for the kids (building ginger bread houses, games, and all that).

What say you?

Do you do the whole "grown folks table vs. kids table.. stay out of grown folks business" thing, or do you COMPLETELY separate the two?
12678013, a shot per touchdown. is that normal?
Posted by Deadzombie, Wed Dec-17-14 10:32 AM
12678018, Not sure. I should mention that it was a shot per home team touchdown.
Posted by daryloneal, Wed Dec-17-14 10:33 AM
So it wasn't like everybody was getting tore-down drunk.

12678027, touchdown, interception, sack, etc
Posted by deejboram, Wed Dec-17-14 10:36 AM
its just some shit to do to keep the game interesting if you rooting for a shitty team (like the Texans or Chargers)

dont do that if you're rooting for broncos tho
12678672, Shit we used to take a shot everytime Chris Collinsworth said something
Posted by T Reynolds, Wed Dec-17-14 04:00 PM
pauseworthy

a shot a TD ain't shit for people I used to drink with
12678688, we do a shot per TD/FG that puts us in the lead, or keeps us in the lead

12678079, I be like, boy go get me a beer from the fridge.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Dec-17-14 11:01 AM
In the town in VA I grew up in it was a scandal when my parents moved into town and threw parties and openly had liquor out for people to consume. The custom was a room in the back grown ups would sneak into and pour a drink.

Town was dry and you couldn't buy and drink alcohol on site until about 5 years ago. Yet we had shot houses and people with terrible drinking problems. Go figure.

Anyway one thing Europeans have sold me on is drinking responsibly around your children and they are more likely to learn to drink responsibly.

I don't think I would do shots in front of kids though but they do know how to do toasts.

12678103, i wouldn't put all Euro drinking habits in the same group
Posted by blackrussian, Wed Dec-17-14 11:10 AM
Sweden has had serious issues with alcoholism to the point that purchase of alcohol has been drastically restricted by the government, I think Finland has a high alcohol-related death rate. The British are also known for extremely irresponsible behaviour related to drinking (I think we also take the most drugs) and as a result have a terrible reputation as tourists in a lot of continental European countries.

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Dec-17-14 11:48 AM
where I see people have no inhibition about drinking in front of kids.

we also envy their relaxed approach to alcohol yet somehow can never recreate it.

Posted by veritas, Wed Dec-17-14 11:11 AM

>they do know how to do toasts.

around your kids aren't exactly the same thing.

not that you can't drink shots "responsibly" but from my experience it's a lot more difficult.
12678083, If it was a Skins game I don't see the issue.

12678113, Never occurred to me not to
Posted by lonesome_d, Wed Dec-17-14 11:12 AM
I mean, I make beer in front of them, no reason not to drink it in front of them. Also wine, liqueurs, rarely a mixed drink/cocktail.

I don't think I've had a shot in multiple decades, however. Wouldn't even occur to me at this point.

Well...I have. My daughter is 2. And, we had a gathering at our house. Her friend came with her parents. So they played in her room and we had drinks. A couple of glasses of wine, or a beer or two. That's it. But, not enough to get sh*tfaced. And, as she gets older, I'm sure that will happen less.
12678172, I mean we are talking about a few shots over 3-4 hours.
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Wed Dec-17-14 11:38 AM
Some people are making it out like these guys were playing some fierce ass drinking game at a daycare center lol.

I often wonder about this though because some people are hella bold about it. I mean, a beer/glass of wine/cocktail at dinner, fine, but to get kinda drunk or really drunk? I dunno. I do see it though. Not that they are alone but I notice the Chicano cats sometimes go hard with that. A kid's third birthday party is stocked with beers like a frat house generally.
12678192, i didn't factor in what offense was playing.
Posted by veritas, Wed Dec-17-14 11:47 AM
My mindset is still in college football.

A shot per touchdown could have you running around the block naked in some of these college shootouts.

the grown ups in my life growing up drank in front of me
so i don't see the big deal
it probably should be noted that i'm haitian and congolese
they're not very tight about shit like that
12678187, I do, but I am aware of it...Thanksgiving though
Posted by EmDub, Wed Dec-17-14 11:45 AM
We just sat at the table and pounded shot after shot and everyone was drinking pretty hard.

My kids were in bed, but my 10 year old nephew was with us and made a comment about how we are all going to be sick tomorrow. Made me think.

Posted by ThaAnthology, Wed Dec-17-14 12:51 PM
as far as he knows that is all that's in my glass.

He did hit me with "Dad, you drink too much Soda" the other day. He was learning about sugars and soda in school.
12678576, I grew up with my pops drinking around us
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Wed Dec-17-14 03:15 PM
My grandmother, grandfathers (granny married like 4 times, all of 'em drank), uncles, and whomever drank around us. Both of my stepfathers made their own wines so there's also that.

Shit, I grew up in a bar. Had my own seat at the bar and everything. Regulars knew my name, knew who my pops, grandmother, and grandfathers were and all.

I drink an occasional beer, wine, or shot of something around them, but not much more than that and they understand that it's an adult thing.

I've also been in line at Walmart and overheard Mexican kids in line tellin moms that "Papa is getting his cervesa..."

It's only a big deal if you make it one or demonize it.

12678591, I guess that's really the point. It's typically a matter of how you....

were raised.

We carry forward many, if not most, of the same traditions and patterns we were raised with.

Normal is subjective.

So it really isn't a matter of right or wrong.

I'm not saying it's a problem, especially if it's done responsibly.

Personally, I just choose not to normalize alcohol around my kids.

I don't demonize it at all, either.

They just don't see it as much as other children may.

I was raised the same way (on my mother's side -- which I'm the closest too).

It's actually somewhat odd for us to have alcohol at our family gatherings, although most of us do drink in some capacity.
12678669, This is my story, I grew up in bars...
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Dec-17-14 03:59 PM
I was a beer runner at house parties.

We used to eat the fruit out of the "Ghetto Juice" or whatever they call it when you line a trash can with a garbage bag and fill it with Everclear and a million other liquors and juices.
12678681, violation. that damn fruit will have you fucked up. nm.

12678621, We drink wine and/or beer with dinner in front of her
Posted by AnaStezia, Wed Dec-17-14 03:39 PM
She calls it "grown up juice". I would never pound shots or get hammered in front of my child, but I see no problem in enjoying a glass of wine. Her father is French so, there's really no avoiding it.
12678662, someone on fb was defending drinking eryday just a few hrs ago
Posted by Calico, Wed Dec-17-14 03:57 PM
and she got about 4 kids....i ain't mad at her, it's her life, but i couldn't do it...

i rarely drink period, and never around the godkids...

12678674, My mom made us go get her beers but never allowed us to open them
Posted by deejboram, Wed Dec-17-14 04:01 PM
weird
i guess she had to draw her own personal line somewhere
12678745, my friend asked who was going to drive
Posted by MzOnyxVI, Wed Dec-17-14 04:38 PM
i'd gone to lunch with a friend and there was a family sitting near us - mom, dad, kids

mom and dad were drinking beer and wine respectively

my friend says, 'can you believe they are drinking in front of their kids? black parents would never do that.'

then he asked who would drive home since they'd both been drinking.

i was confused as hell and attributed it to him being from chicago and me being from a small town where not driving wasn't an option

maybe his folks drank but didn't have to drive home

i don't know

my mama'nem drank in front of me and i imagine when i have children, i will too

i dont think theres anything wrong with having a drink or two in front of children provided you are responsible and still of sound mind enough to take care of them.
