What if that happened?

D'Angelo Will Unveil New Album 'Black Messiah' at NYC Listening Party

The R&B singer will play the album in its entirety at an event hosted by Nelson George

By Jason Newman | December 12, 2014

After 14 years, numerous false starts and nearly two years of D'Angelo's next album being "99 percent done," the singer will unveil the follow-up to 2000's Voodoo this Sunday.

The R&B singer will play the completed album, Black Messiah, in its entirety at a listening session in New York hosted by writer Nelson George and organized by Red Bull Music Academy and Afropunk.

As Consequence of Sound notes, D'Angelo's manager Kevin Liles shared a mysterious teaser trailer to promote the album.
George and the singer sat down in May at New York's Brooklyn Museum for a public discussion. When the topic of "neo-soul" came up, D'Angelo hinted that he was embarking on a new musical direction with his own music. "I respect for what it is, but anytime you put a name on something, you just put it in a box," said D'Angelo. "You want to be in a position where you can grow as an artist. You never want to be told, 'Hey, well, you're a neo-soul artist.' Right now, I'm not. We're going someplace else."

D'Angelo also referenced his return to the spotlight, which began with a triumphant covers set at Bonnaroo 2012. Since then, whispers of a new album have appeared periodically.

Shortly after Bonnaroo, Questlove told Rolling Stone that D'Angelo had recorded nearly 30 tracks at Electric Lady, the same New York studio where the singer cut Voodoo. "He is about to take a radical 180 turn with this record," Questlove said at the time. "It's going to throw people off the same way that Prince's Dirty Mindthrew his R&B fanbase off. In the past few years, he's discovered Bowie and Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Pet Sounds, Captain Beefheart and Zappa." At the time, Questlove said that the musician was experimenting with guitar arrangements and creating his own keyboard sounds.

In January 2013, Questlove told Billboard that D'Angelo's album was "99 percent done." "I would not be far off by saying this is probably my generation's version of Sly There's a Riot Goin' On," the drummer said. "It's potent. It's funky. It's an extremely hard pill to swallow.

"It's going to take you about 10 years to digest this record," he added. "Totally brilliant. Just the way this society works with music...being able to judge if something is a classic after the first listen, you can do that after 30 seconds on this. And the fact that we started this record in 2004, and it still sounds like it came out five years from now, it is a testament to the timelessness of it."

In a June interview, Liles said that the Bonnaroo show inspired D'Angelo to want to finish the album. "He very bluntly put it, 'Kev, the studio and the stage: that's my lifeblood. Now that I've touched it again, now that I see it again, I wanna be sure that the baby I'm about to have – the album – that I take it to the point where it's all it can be.'"

Posted by vee-lover, Sat Dec-13-14 01:54 PM
and keep up w/the soulless excuse for what is called R&B music today

Whether he can pull these disparate sounds all together to create something classic remains to be seen but I'm eager to hear if he can and will cop that ish in a heartbeat

Posted by cgonz00cc, Sun Dec-14-14 01:29 PM
Dont conflate the corporate controlled playlists of radio, with accessibility. Songs dont break because of accessibility, they break because they fit in with marketing trends. We've been here long enough to have had this conversation 1000 times and its worse now than it was in 2000. None of the music that brought us here 15 years ago would get ANY play on contemporary radio. Not TFA, not LWFC, not Reflection Eternal, not Lets Get Free, not Voodoo...none of it.

This is a funky, low key yet swinging, track that should have a lot of appeal across demographics.

Something i could slide up to a girl to at a bar, or that my dad could play in his ride.

I know you have talked about how much you like Disclosure, and Im right there with you. But the only reason a Chicago House / UK Garage revival album popped was the fact that EDM had been cresting below the level of corporate radio for like 5 years.
12675156, not sure mainstream R&B radio play matters as much as it used to

Ho. Lee. Shit. I don’t know if I ever imagined I’d be in the position to actually tell someone that the D’Angelo had finally delivered on everyone’s except his own promise to redeem soul music wholly and forever with the follow-up to his turn-of-the-century masterpiece Voodoo. Well, good people of the Okay realm and abroad, it is with exultant joy and humility that I can say the day is here. And it’s every bit as sweet as I always dreamed it would be.What do you think?

It’s not like we weren’t forewarned or anything. If the last 14 years of our lives have proven anything, it’s that every 7-8 months or so someone you know (mostly Questlove) will chime in with the “Oh, I heard that new D from my boy who’s engineering the record. Shit is crazy!” whispers to set the jones in. But it wasn’t just Questo’s chirps and nudges that put the bug in us. Back in 2010, before the initial European tour, before the musical magnificence that was the Brothers In Arms tour, before Russell Elevado criminally teased us with 6-second clips from the studio, even before that spacey P-funked-out cover of Sound Garden’s “Black Hole Sun” mysteriously surfaced, OKP alum DJ Brainchild sat with the man himself and heard the words straight from the source :What do you think?

“I just want them to know that I’m coming. That’s all. I’m in the kitchen and I’m cooking up something real nice.”What do you think?

And now we’re faced with what once seemed virtually unimaginable; a full-fledged answer to 14 years of prayers. Who would’ve thought that a man that once claimed to be so detached from the digital landscape could manage to out-Beyoncé Beyoncé? Familiar Soulquarians like Questlove, Q-Tip and newcomer Kendra Foster make appearances (especially in the album’s writing credits). But what’s to say for this new, prism? This masterful blend of classic and contemporary soul, funk and blues, forged by years of refinement. What do you think?

Listen, I’m not even trying to put forth that this is the end all, be all album of our lives or that the rest of the industry should just pack up their shit and quit But as a mid-twenties D’liever who took to Voodoo like an inmate to 5% Nation after high-school and got through his first years of college reading Questo’s Voodoo Diaries over and over again, this shit is monumental. What do you think?

Lucky for you and me and the rest of the damn world, our very own Editor-In-Chief Eddie “STATS” was amongst the “first to worship” at the ultra-exclusive listening party, which took place in NYC just a few hours ago. You can read his thorough track-by-track review of the album as it was being played for the very first time below. Just be sure that come midnight you’ve got your card out, ’cause Black Messiah waits for no man or woman. The 15-years-in-the making follow-up to Voodoo hits iTunes at 12:00AM EST with CD and 2xLP vinyl release coming next week. Get your first taste of D’Angelo’s finally realized resurgence with a companion script below and check back at midnight for the link. May D be with you, good people. What do you think?

“Ain’t That Easy” comes in with an echoey ping-pong-crack snare, like a ball bouncing off the table and being exploded by a gunshot. The underlying Funkadelic blues groove is a recognizable progression from Voodoo’s anthemic “Chicken Grease,” but has a harder, darker edge both in the beat itself and the raucous guitar lick for D’s falsetto to ricochet off. The frenetic six-string work (which according to Questo is all D) tips its hat to Eddie Hazel on all levels. “1000 Deaths” commences with the preacher reciting the Bible’s description of Christ and a groove that knocks like Funkadelic‘s hard-nosed, loose-lipped theatrical rock tailored to a the finely-tuned, yet purposely slopped styles of J Dilla. It’s All held together by bomb squad-ish black noize sonics; a tribute to engineer and long-time friend Russ Elevado, showing that dissonant elements create a whole greater than the tracks. What do you think?

“The Charade” came to life with a spacey guitar intro — again distinct Hazel meets “Diamonds + Pearls dreamscape type ish — made spacier by backwards masking. But D’s unmistakable falsetto resolves the psychedelia into a sad soulful groove, while the claps in the beat recall church service or a ’60s boogaloo track. “Sugah Daddy” (which premiered in the wee hours of the morning) is a Harlem Globetrotter-esque hand-jive beat ala “Sweet Georgia Brown,” strutting (at time hilariously) as the funkiest shit you’ve ever heard with touches of Roy Hargrove‘s horn composing wizardry slathered all over. What do you think?

String adagios with tape noise and barely audible voices open “Really Love,” the album’s halftime lullaby. Spanish guitar comes in and we are officially in Desperado country, but the strings resolve into a pizzicato groove with post-Dilla slow banging clap-on/clap-off beat, unclear how the parts will resolve until D’s voice says “When you call my name…” and the emotion brings all the parts together with that walking bass line. Kinda like Jay Dee and The Roots’ “Dynamite” in slow(er) motion, evoking a more wistful mood and capping off Side A with a bubbly improvisation. What do you think?

Side B is truly the b-sides. Where the former is comprised of practically all single-status cuts, the flip is made up of deeper and somewhat darker cuts, socially sharp and politically poignant. “Back In The Future (Part I)” reestablishes that D’s signature is falsetto ad walking bass, continuing the cosmic feel that’s permeated throughout the record and features more lilts of string arrangements. “Till It’s Done (Tutu)” features big drums from Questo and psych-rock guitar through-a-window-fan-warble. Or is it D imitating guitar with a rhodes as he’s known to do? With Miss Foster on dirge-like vocals, the song ends on a strangely open-ended phrase. What do you think?

“Prayer” has a weird and haunted, but somehow goofy synth-scape with drunken drums. Very Prince ala Sign O The Times or “Annie Christian.” The end of the track piques with what is easily D’s illest guitar freakout yet: something like “Frantic Moment” meets “Let’s Go Crazy.”What do you think?

“Betray My Heart” opens with temple chimes and a tinny guitar groove, underpinned by clockwork rimshots and Hargrove’s horns talking wah-wah rhodes or most of the song in a wordless conversation, ending on D’s equally wordless croon. “The Door” features a slow-knocking beat and whistle at it’s base. The guitar work is so Dixieland it’s almost Leon Redbone, almost Doobie Broothers even. But funky as fuq. What do you think?

“Back In The Future (Part II)” fades up right where Part 1 left us, but quickly gives the drummer some, while D quietly catches the spirit in the background. Hi-hats sizzle on the album’s pleading closer “Another Life,” announcing a huge piano vamp. Sitar licks bring the vibe of Smokey Robinson or Chondelles pure doo-wop stylings. D’s voice here recalls Ecstasy-era Junie Morrison, as if the full history of black music is contained within it (which some critics have described as a narrow range.) The drums gets drunker while the changes on the piano fill get bigger and louder, taking us higher and higher until it’s over. What do you think?

Posted by daryloneal, Mon Dec-15-14 09:21 AM
I still have to sit with it for a while to give it my true verdict, but even aesthecially, this could iniatate a true shift.... if we allow it to.

But if it's judged on the basis of not being a Brown Sugar or an album of just Send It On's or Untitled's, the boat will be sadly missed.

My question is how patient are people able to allow themselves to be with music in 2014/2015?

Am I the only one whothinks he's hiding his vocals? If they aren't distorted, they're so layered and filtered, or he's mumbling, and it's pressed so deep into the music that it's distracting.

I'm only on the first spin, but this is everything that annoyed me on Spanish Joint turned up 1000x

The music is solid, and it's not too far away from voodoo. Vocally is way too fast away and less confident than Brown sugar.

Maybe I'll love it more after more spins.

Andvocals quality not matching the background.
12675608, I wouldn't take that as a lack of confidence.
Posted by Starbaby Jones, Mon Dec-15-14 10:59 AM
He seems to be going for very stylized vocals for most of the album. However, we've heard him sing like half of these songs live. So, we know he's still got his chops.
12675663, a lot of these songs are old. I'm speculating, but i doubt he
Posted by iKilan, Mon Dec-15-14 11:28 AM
Was confident while recording.

Even if he was, and it's stylized, it's over done, and garbled. Doit here and there, but every song?
12675740, I think it comes down to a matter of taste.
Posted by Starbaby Jones, Mon Dec-15-14 12:10 PM
As a person who enjoys that dissonance in his funk, I'm cool with it, but I can completely understand how it could be off-putting. It kind of falls in the everything ain't for everybody category. I just don't think it's a confidence thing as much it was an artistic choice. A pretty bold one, which means some will dig some won't.
12675755, right. this seems to be D's style.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Dec-15-14 12:14 PM
i dig it. i'm sure it's the result of conscious effort not a lack of anything.

I haven't isolated myself with it completely, but I will. He certainly has gone to Prince's school of vocal arrangements. He's a marginal singer but anyone thinking he's supposed to sound like Luther Vandross is stupid.

Even he knows he's a marginal singer. There are numerous singers that have better voices but his MUSIC is outstanding. His voice is good enough and I already know what he sounds like live so my credibility can't be questioned. Aligning someone's personal preferences with credibility is rather stupid in and of itself. Sisqó has a better voice but I wouldn't stay up past midnight to buy his MUSIC.

Posted by Starbaby Jones, Tue Dec-16-14 12:23 AM
Your credibility can be questioned and it is right now, because by no stretch of the imagination is D a marginal singer. That's like saying Ornette Coleman is a marginal saxophonist b/c he does avant grade shit. The mastery one's medium is precisely what allows an artist to stray from conventions. From just about any technical standpoint (tone, timbre, pitch, phrasing), barring enunciation, D is far from marginal. It's not even about personal preference, he's from a purely technical standpoint an awesome singer who can emote the fuck out of a lyric. For you to pull Sisqo as your example tells me how disqualified you are to have this discussion.
12676436, RE: Dude, step away from whatever pipe has got you this amped up.
Posted by Khalil19, Tue Dec-16-14 12:59 AM
You're talking to someone who's played the sax for 32 years. Trust me...your response wasn't impressive. I pulled Sisqo to prove my point. D's voice has limited range for a vocalist and if you can't hear that this back and forth is pointless. Sisqo's vocal range gives him the ability to sing almost any style but his personal taste makes his music trash. The point - D's musicianship dwarfs his vocal ability unlike most artist who can only sing well. Pure and simple...his range is limited. That in no way discredits him as an artist. Bob Dillon can't sing either...

Posted by Starbaby Jones, Tue Dec-16-14 01:16 AM
If you've truly been studying music that long then you know range is only one factor...although, D's vocal range, especially his falsetto, is pretty impressive and it's on display throughout this album, which further tells me you don't know what the hell you're talking about.
12676454, RE: What gave you the impression I was attempting to impress you?
Posted by Khalil19, Tue Dec-16-14 02:28 AM
You follow a long line of bitches on here that get all up in arms when someone's preferences doesn't match their own. D's voice...ISN'T my preference. If I could wake up with someone's voice, it would be Otis Redding because that's MY preference. D sings the way he does because his range has limits. It not a knock on his music...just an observation and once again, you're too caught up in what YOU prefer to see the difference.

12676456, You can have your preference and I give zero fucks if you like D.
Posted by Starbaby Jones, Tue Dec-16-14 02:46 AM
However, you're trying to pass your opinion off as fact when by all objective criteria, barring enunciation, D is far from a marginal singer. You can't dispute me on any legitimate basis, which is why you're retreating to name-calling. You don't have to like the guy, but you're making baseless statements about vocals that you can't back up. Do your thing, though. I see your tactics, deflect when you can't present a real argument.
12677402, Let me remind you how this started..
Posted by Khalil19, Tue Dec-16-14 04:32 PM
I stated my opinion of him being a marginal singer with masterful musicianship (the latter not express but implied). YOU...with your hurt butt took my opinion personal and questioned MY credibility. Which also means that YOU are taking someone's opinion against your own preferences and instead of just stating you disagree...you attacked me. So I attacked you right back. Go look at the other person who didn't agree with me but DIDN'T insult me. I took that and kept it moving. So YES, I'm name calling because you went bitch on me. Analyze THAT ho!

I don't go there unless you do so don't act like a pussy when I snark back!

12681319, Your statement about him being a marginal singer is wrong.
Posted by Starbaby Jones, Sat Dec-20-14 12:52 PM
It is an observable thing. There are objective ways you can determine his ability as a singer (e.g. tone, range, pitch, etc.). The only thing you presented as an example of D as a marginal singer is saying he has limited range, yet this nigga is hitting high notes all over this album with zero assistance from autotune, melodyne or any other digital processing. Marginal singers cannot do what D'Angelo does. That's not an opinion it's an observable fact. That you can't admit that or present any sort of coherent argument to dispute shows that you have no credibility and therefore your opinion on the matter is utterly meaningless.
12676441, What gave you the impression I was attempting to impress you?

I love D'Angelo. His vocal range "sweet spot" is small. He works the hell out of that limited range though. And comes with great melodies and harmonies. Saying he's a "marginal singer" might be overselling your intended point though. I feel Omar from the UK is even less of a singer but I like him as a well.

Ps when he does covers is when you realise it the most.

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Dec-15-14 11:48 AM
My constant complaint of Prince is that he has utterly divorced himself from Modern Black Music and sounds lost in his own world of funk that no one is interested in.

To me this sounds totally uninterested in anything that is on the radio, reaches back to classic sound AND creates something completely new and fresh sounding. I love it.

His Funk is definitely Black Music. It's just not that interesting. Bruno Mars, or Mark Ronson, is taking the most interesting elements of Black Funk and making it Pop friendly.

You'll hate it but would love Mark Ronson to go into the studio with Prince and keep him focused.

Posted by SoWhat, Mon Dec-15-14 12:19 PM
yr old man. that Supernatural album he made. why should Prince make a record like that?

Prince w/modern young Pop producers featuring guest roles from modern Pop entertainers. for what?

Prince had plenty Pop success 20 to 30 yrs ago making music in his own style that didn't sound much like what was going on in mainstream music at the time.

he's got nothing left to prove on that accord. he's already done it. why do it again? so we can re-live OUR youth?

12675780, i feel prince is fine.

he's had an amazing career and ppl still dig what he's doing.
but i would like to hear what prince would sound like if there were some other voices in the room.

prince would still sound like prince, but it'd be an interesting experiment
to hear him in the studio with Rick Rueben or mark ronson or whoever.

they don't even have to touch a knob.
just be there and have prince talk to them about ideas and have then suggest some.

*i'd* like to hear what would come out.

but i agree-- prince's career is fine.

I have no use for it, but it's perfectly listenable.
We all want prince to continue to innovate,
which is a lot to ask from one person.

In the 80s he came up with Dirty Mind - Sign of the Times
(most of them have new sounds that were different from what came before.)

Not to mention the stuff he did for The Time.

Not to mention one offs for pop acts like the Bangles.

And then in the 90s, he still had a pop presence.

And he's still going. The stuff isn't innovative, but it's fine.

I don't know what ppl want from prince.
Well, i do.

But the truth is this is one person.
Most legends have a golden era that last for 10 years.
Princes golden era was 10 years that got the work of 20 years out of one person.

I mean...

his latest stuff is fine. it's good.
Not 80s prince good, but damn.

He is only 1 person.

12675926, Nah man even his most ardent fans don't dig his new material
Posted by vee-lover, Mon Dec-15-14 01:52 PM
Prince recently said most of the fans who come out to his shows ONLY want to hear his old stuff...and that it took him awhile to accept that - I don't think Prince has gained a lot of new fans post "Graffiti Bridge" (<---his last really good album imo)

Questlove said he and Q-Tip use to ask him why doesn't he create the music wants from him or why won't he work with or collaborate with artists/producers like Quest/D'Angelo/3 Stacks/Michelle Ndegeocello/Tip ...artists who know his sound and won't deviate too much from that

his fans are about as crazy as MJ fans.
which is saying something.

anyway, if somebody that wasn't prince released
"Breakfast can wait" or anything from that third eye girl,
ppl would think they were a talented band releasing competent, derivative rock music.

but prince released those records.
so ppl think it sucks.

his new music it's not great.
it's not innovative, either.

but it's fine.
and i say that as somebody that doesn't like his new stuff.
12676607, I feel you... I don't dig much of his new stuff

the thing is D could not have made this album without having Prince come before him, but Prince could not have made anything that sounds like this....he's out there stuck in the midst of thought experiments such as, "Can I make three white women sound like the Bar-kays?"

marinate on this record

But so far the song that immediately caught my attention are...
-Another Life
-Really Love (a really dope song)
-PRAYER (2nd song that grab me right away)
-THE ChARADE (I absolutely love this song!)

Prince's influence is felt throughout this entire record

The album is brilliant and something sorely needed in today's music climate

As for the mumbling that some of you all are complaining abt, hey, James Brown seemed to do just fine w/mumblimg

12676872, According to the liner notes
Posted by Numba_33, Tue Dec-16-14 12:01 PM
?uest is on The Charade and Another life.

What tracks did you hear the druken Dilla drums that referenced? I'm not a huge fan of his, but I'm curious what you're referring to. Perhaps I won't hear it since I'm not a huge fan like I said though.
12677045, You should read ?uest's stories about the first time he heard Dilla
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Dec-16-14 01:22 PM
i'm not the biggest Dilla fan either.
But Ahmir makes the point that his drums aren't perfectly quantized. They seem... late. Almost sloppy, but it's intentional. Like he's playing drunk or something.

I hear it in "Ain't that easy" and elsewhere I think.
I'll come back.
12677200, Since you used the word read
Posted by Numba_33, Tue Dec-16-14 02:35 PM
I'm assuming the Dilla stories are in the Mo Meta book ?uest released sometime ago? I remember hearing ?uest talk about changing his drumming style either because of Dilla or D'Angelo from one of the Red Bull Music sessions. It sounds similar to what you're talking about, but I'm not 100% sure because my memory of the anecdote is off.

12676628, Social media information is on the back of the CD
Posted by Numba_33, Tue Dec-16-14 10:14 AM
According to the info on the back of the CD, here goes:

facebook: facebook.com/Dangelo
twitter: @Dangelo_music
website: Dangelo.com

But given how reclusive he's been musically, muchless in general, and how nutso social media is these days, you can't be too surprised he doesn't have the largest social media presence. I'm certain when he tours, other websites (including this one you're on right now) will have touring information.
12676661, uhhh I dont have the physical CD nor know where to buy it
Posted by deejboram, Tue Dec-16-14 10:29 AM
i like his music

i prefer to hear/see him live and with 99.99% of the other artists i support i can find them EASILY online via a google search

12676709, that means he didn't own/pay for that URL, correct?
Posted by deejboram, Tue Dec-16-14 10:49 AM
cmon man
this dude has been anticipated to release an album for almost two DECADES now
and he is in PRIMETIME position to reap as much financial benes as possible and his business manager is letting something as simple as a URL slide?
man they missing out on traffic

they needed to have all his pressers on his own branded site
reason(s) why he took so long to come out
15 sec snippets of all his tracks

man, i must say beyonce's machine really did well with her last album release

dangelo's biz manager should know this dude has a very short window to reap the most finances out of this

his music is great on this
i just dont like to see folks leave money on the table
like he's doing here
printing a bogus website on the back of your cd is a HUGE no-no
12676878, the correct URL is d-angelo.com
Posted by Chicane, Tue Dec-16-14 12:05 PM

12676960, Thanks for that correction.

Says they did 70 tracks. 23 if "spruced up" would be "omfg territory."

We all know how hyperbolic he can be but shiiiiiiiet. Got me feeling good.

He also says to expect more music in the next year and that D is already talking about an expanded edition.

12677395, This is exactly what we needed from him.
Posted by Soon, Tue Dec-16-14 04:27 PM
Some reviewer or other was bitching yesterday about how it wasn't another Voodoo, but I'm like we don't need another Voodoo. Music shouldn't be made just for nostalgia's sake, and besides, any attempt to recreate that album will fail.

Going in a new direction where his sound is concerned, expanding while remaining very much himself...that's the way forward, and that's what he's done.

Regarding the vocals...if they had been brought up a good 3dB almost throughout, they'd be a lot more intelligible while still keeping the feel of being pressed deep into the mix. That's even if they were sung exactly the same way. And I have a couple of other issues with the mixing, but suspect that instrumentalists were guiding the decisions there. And anyway, the lows-heavy sound gives it a live band sort of feel, which ain't a bad thing.

12677713, the whole album to me is like an "instrumental" album
Posted by Allah, Tue Dec-16-14 11:17 PM
even the vocalizations, like the vocals are being used as "synths" and "leads" and so forth.
12677444, ...eh. I guess dude's music just ain't for me
Posted by kayru99, Tue Dec-16-14 04:53 PM
it's like 3, maybe 4 bangers on here.

The rest is hella background music-ish.

it just feels really...polite.

Pleasant.

Inoffensive.

Nothing wrong with that, but you'd need some really solid songs to pull off an interesting album with such a muted feel to it. *shrug*

Happy for buddy to finally release something though. Hope he makes a grip of money from it
12677471, ^^^ yep and I'm a D'Angelo fan but I couldnt have said it better. This is--

Im glad it came out enjoyable but if you believe D'Angelo was truly ready this story says otherwise
12677694, that's what I was referring to in #186.

Music, as with most things, is all about timing. The timing is definitely right.

The same weekend as nationwide protests?

That was a money shot, right there.

They got it right.
12677779, Thanks to whoever said this D album reminds them of Van Hunt
Posted by Kid Ray, Wed Dec-17-14 01:18 AM
I only knew dude from Dust and down here on hell.

I just listened to what were you hoping for and it's fantastic.
12684417, Van is a fuckin genius...
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Thu Dec-25-14 06:43 AM
What Were You Hoping For is that joint. "Plum" and the title track? The whole album? Flames.

Here are some more joints for you, fam.
Enjoy.

We begin with a ballad that rivals any ballad D's ever done:
What Can I Say (For Millicent)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzozHD8uqrs

We continue with another ballad that's probably one of the best ever written
(I actually shed a tear the first time I listened all the way through):
Daredevil, Baby
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkKiYnB3s5Y

Last ballad, but I mean WHO said this dude "doesn't have the songs" ?
There's Never A G'time To Say G'bye
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-w7OQE_1Fw

Picking up the tempo just slightly...
Who Will Love Me In Winter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPed1qbcSn4

some uptempo funk...
Out Of The Sky
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKlWU-8jLMM

some mid-tempo groovy funk
Blood From A Heart of Stone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_twHbWJ9kM

funky ass groove... always poetic with it
Hot Stage Lights
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_o2NtlxilYo
here's a remix of that one... moving into rock territory
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBEjZuahab8

rockin' out
Ride, Ride, Ride
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAncQuU77xI

something about this one just takes me to another place:
Thrill Of This Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ooUMPiOq2o

WHO SAID THIS DUDE DON'T HAVE SONGS?!?!
Mean Sleep (ft. Nikka Costa)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBAsnESpmJM
12681168, no love for Betray My Heart? i listen to a 12 track playlist of that
Posted by Riot, Fri Dec-19-14 10:37 PM

12681202, One of my faves. Love it

12684413, My fave for the last two days. Changes almost every day though.
Posted by Chicane, Thu Dec-25-14 04:54 AM
when the horn kicks in halfway through? Ugh.
12681697, If I could get off Another Life....
Posted by Inkosi, Sun Dec-21-14 10:03 AM
I maybe could appreciate the rest of the album. I wish he had done 13 of those.

It sounds like a jam session with a couple of songs thrown in.
12684411, I had to let the music marinate before giving a verdict
Posted by Chicane, Thu Dec-25-14 04:49 AM
It's a close run with Voodoo for his best album so far. He came back with a bang.

The sign of a good album is when your fav song changes every DAY. Yesterday was Prayer, today is Betray My Heart. Even starting to like The Door which I disliked on first play.

Tip: Best listened to in your car to appreciate Pino's basslines or even better still, via headphones - you discover something new sonically every time.

12685040, RE: D'Angelo's album is called Black Messiah
Posted by TRENDone, Fri Dec-26-14 08:08 PM
My favs are
Sugah Daddy (chicken grease 2.0 but it got an 808 boom lol)
Really Love (send it on/1 mo gin 2.0)
Back 2 The Future Part 1
Betray My Heart (spanish joint 2.0)

I like the little break at the end of 1000 deaths, too

I hear the heavy P-Funk & Beatles influence, not so much the hip-hop. It's as if D'angelo dropped voodoo, went on tour, came back with a guitar & Kendra Foster (some of the Soultronics left), & cut this album. All in 14 years yay!

U can tell it's the same engineers from Voodoo, but Voodoo had "simpler" songs. I'm ready to hear a studio album of D' over a drum machine & synths again.

I'll give it some time cuz it's D'...but I'm in such a different mindstate & place in life now
