Gov. Cuomo, Jay Z talk justice reforms in NYC

Rap mogul Jay Z had an audience Wednesday with Gov. Andrew Cuomo—or did Cuomo have an audience with Jay Z?—as the two discussed potential changes to the criminal justice system, according to a Cuomo spokeswoman.

The meeting came a week after a Staten Island grand jury chose not to indict a white New York City police officer in the death of Eric Garner, a 43-year-old who was placed in a chokehold-like maneuver that was captured on video.

“Governor Cuomo and Shawn ‘JAY Z’ Carter had a productive conversation about doing a top to bottom review of the Criminal Justice system and how we can all work together to pass a reform package that ensures equality in the eyes of the law,” Cuomo Communications Director Melissa DeRosa said in a statement.

The meeting was first reported by the Daily Kos.

Cuomo has called for a “soup to nuts” review of the state’s police standards and grand jury policies, and has signaled it will be a major topic of conversation once the state Legislature returns to the Capitol for its regular session in June.

Are you asking why it's soup to nuts? I don't know, maybe it's from a grocery store like the owner saying we're gonna do a complete inventory soup to nuts. Or a nice dinner, you usually start with a soup then go through apps and entrees to dessert and nuts and coffee

Posted by teefiveten, Thu Dec-11-14 12:07 PM
i know a lawyer who's basically trying to learn/navigate it out here for clients/friends in Colorado and Washington and Cali that want to expand out here once NY gets their shit together

this is really all set up for a large scale business, not so much someone enterprising and wanting to do a small medical edible thing. unless they allow you to set up as a manufacturer which again, they haven't figured out. the last i heard they were considering allowing weed to be imported from other states b/c they weren't sure how growing would work here.

it might benefit you to find other folks trying to get in on the action then finding a lawyer or link w/ an NY advocacy group who can break down the law and give you progress reports on how the structure is being set up
12672547, one step ahead of you

they seem to be the most organized from the research I've done

and lmao at importing from other states
do they know how many growhouses are already here???

and you're spot on about this movement being geared for big business
I remember when that big weed expo here was announced and I really wanted to go but I simply did not have the $800 for tickets. I gave that event a serious side-eye for that.

oh yeah if you could forward that lawyer's contact info, it would be greatly appreciated :)

This is the same dude that didn't understand why trying to capitalize on the anti-capitalist protest slogans from occupy-wall street for his clothing line was problematic.
Same dude that let a buncha white folks use his name to dupe people out of affordable housing for the Barclay's center in Brooklyn.
Same dude that tried to remain neutral about racial discrimination at a store where they sell his "urban" clothing line.
Same dude that disrespected Harry Belafonte for calling him to task on activism and said his mere presence is activism.

Like someone said above, Hov is the nigga white folks feel comfortable to call when they want to appear engaged with "urban" folks so they can get over. He gets paid off letting them use his image. He's not the nigga I want talking to the governor about them killing black people in the streets like dogs.

The reporter afterwards says, Cuomo is talking with advisors from all over to determine what the next steps will be.
