12671178, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet were asked to pick one word (swipe)

to describe why they are so successful

They both said: FOCUS

Do you agree?

http://gregmckeown.com/blog/one-word-answer-warren-buffet-bill-gates-successful/

I updated because I paraphrased (heard it on the radio).

I think this may change some of the answers. My bad... but since people were saying the original answer was stupid I wanted to make sure I had it correct.

12671182, I could disagree but it's Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, sooo who gives

12671183, the question was stupid.

it takes more than one thing to get to that level of success.
bill gates was focused.

but he had something to be focused on because
he was hooked up with a mainframe to fool around with
before most ppl knew what a computer was.

bill gates didn't earn that first mainframe computer.
he just got it and became obsessed with it.

the question suggest there is one thing that makes somebody successful.
but unless we are talking about hitting lotto,
you need at least 2 or 3 things to break in your favor
for you to make it do what it do.

i don't begrudge their answers,
but the question was phrased in a way that shows a
faulty or disingenuous assumption about how ppl become successful.
12671259, But they never said it only takes one thing to be successful.

The constraints of the question is pick one word to describe why they are successful, not pick the one thing that will guarantee success.

I don't think either will tell you being focused alone will make you successful.

I don't think the question was intent to solving the complex question of what it takes to be successful.

it's still a dumb question.
it's also a question they've been asked dozens of times.

the fact that ppl keep asking it is part of the problem.

12671185, very silly question.
Posted by daryloneal, Wed Dec-10-14 09:47 AM
Many people tend to look for quick tips for this and that.

Consider how many articles are written in the style of "5 things you need to know about...", "3 things you need to do in order to..".

I'm all about context so those things don't appeal to me.
12671260, Focus is not a quick tip/easy way out.

Focus is perhaps one of the most difficult virtues to implement into your life. It requires great sacrifice and character to use.
12671280, Not really.
Posted by daryloneal, Wed Dec-10-14 10:59 AM
I don't believe the average person lacks focus. I believe people tend to focus on things that may not be meant for them.

Many people have trouble "finding" their focus, not actually focusing.

Like I said, context.

Someone could take that one word answer (I haven't read the edit to this post yet) and say okay, I just need to stay focused on what I want.

Not really.

Also you may be throwing dedication into your definition of focus, which again proves why it's a silly question. One word alone doesn't do the intent any justice.
12671203, I fucked this all up.. does the edit change anyone's mind?

12671248, I definitely agree.

We spend our lives chasing physical and emotional sensations. From sex to getting drunk, from love to leisure time, everyone is on a self serving agenda of the most basic/primitive level which yields the absolute best personal result. It is usually and predominantly about "Me".

Focus requires that you sacrifice sensation for a purpose, therefore, having clear and dedicated focus is a powerful virtue which can move mountains.
12671350, yup, I agree as well.
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Dec-10-14 12:05 PM
some people can focus in small increments but to focus all day every day on your craft, love, biz... that's completely different and a lot of people can't do it.

It's also no fun to be around people like this because half the time they are zoned out or always flip the convo back to their obsession.
