I have zero specific questions, I'm just here to soak up game.

Those NYC posts have become monsters.

What do you hate? Aside from New York transplants.

You are never ever ever ever ever EVA gonna pull up and park adjacent to the Potomac, and watch Dolphins frolic in the water.

Only thing DC has going for it is that its close to Baltimore, and therefore you can drive and pick up the best crabcakes in the world in 45 minutes. That and the museums (not to be confused with the galleries) is all DC has over LA.

Posted by astralblak, Tue Dec-09-14 03:55 PM
there are a couple by Longo and some one else when they were moving here that breaks down pricing and area, but those might be been archived

but basically LA COUNTY is HUGE. shit 60 miles North is still in the county, and areas that are actually their own cities like Culver and Santa Monica are still pretty much referred / looked at as the "westside" LA, and yes the east west divide is real.

LA proper, in my opinion is Downtown, Mid City, Inglewood, Baldwin Hills, Leimert park, East Los, and South Central. I've never lived in any, have friends and family in each. violence/crime is low in each area relative to what it was in the late70s-90s, and honestly besides Downtown, there are nice homes to buy/live in each area. highest concentration of Black folk, and Mexicanos / other latinos.

Silverlake, Echo park, and parts of Highland are the hipster/creative hubs in the east-ish parts of LA. there first is VERY white, the second was a predominately Chicano neighborhood that is being rapidly gentrified. one of my favorite spots, the Echo (raegge/dub and electronic acts perform there and relatively cheap drinks) is there.

Pasadena, Eagle Rock, and Atwater Village (veer far enough east in atwater and it gets a lil' grimey old gang areas) are working and middle class areas that have there own little eateries and performance venues. VERY nice homes to rent or buy. mostly White with a good number of Latinos, and some brooks brother Blacks

Hollywood is what the movies show you. outside of Amoeba (huge record store, that has everything) it's too loud and active for my "tastes". literally celluloid bourgeois opulence next to dystopian poverty

West Ho is affluent and gay, pricey as shit too.

Beverly Hills is what it is in the movies and rather uncomfortable if your skin happens to be brown.

our museums and galleries are incredible. From the their architecture to their actual work: MOCA, MOCA geffen, LACMA, The Getty, Known gallery, 1988, HVW8, Pappilion, and Seventh letter.

I haven't even spoken on the beach areas, west side, fairfax, lil ethiopa and "The valley" (aka were I was raised)

I've worked in the heart of Hollywood and it's all a bit too surreal for me. Once I saw a chick in a Wonder Woman costume eating McDonalds by herself. The poverty is ridic too, some of the crustiest white people I've ever seen outside of SF.

Posted by double 0, Tue Dec-09-14 05:25 PM
LA is like 30 top tier midwest cities in one county.. with mountains and a beach on each side..

Damn near every neighborhood can be a whole different vibe. Because of the lack of transpo deep into most areas though it is much more a destination city...

And I'd argue much more a "day-life" city.. bbq's, mansion parties, pool parties, surfing, skiing, hiking, speeding through the mountains or up the coast etc.. if done right you are tired as fuck by night time so the 2am (1.45) closing isnt much of an issue.

The people I know that really hate LA.. hate it because they have to search and/or they've been duped into living in west hollywood area..

12670876, you can be everywhere and nowhere
Posted by now or never, Tue Dec-09-14 05:38 PM
yes the weather is tight and its hoes.
but most of all it's the feel of it.
you don't have to leave LA to get away from shit.
you can go from being in the middle of everything goin on to completely isolated and on your own
and still be able to be outside, chillin, in a yard with palm trees, drinkin a brew
or downtown at a rooftop party, leaving to get tacos
or in venice at some girl house you been tryna fuck for like a month who still playin but you don't care because its venice and you can leave and go to a bar on the beach and meet more hoes
or down Crenshaw getting a haircut and eatin smothered fried chicken
the quality of life is so tight and you don't have to live in an apartment the size of a kitchen
and we 3 hours behind so all the tv shows and football games come on earlier so you aint gotta wait
and people don't talk all fast and shit
and everybody is like 2 people away from being friends with snoop.
and everybody knows that the shit is kinda corny, so nobody takes themselves that seriously unless they're in entertainment
and it's like 72 degrees today.

there's some wack shit about it like traffic and the inevitable earthquake that's gonna kill us all.
and yeah, there's girls who really talk like kim or Hillary banks.
and you won't know the best shit to do in koreatown unless you're Korean or maybe white.
and people do blow smoke up your ass instead of telling you the truth sometimes.
but that's just because they want you to feel good.
LA feels good.

It really is women, weed and weather

My only problem was forgetting to snap after dapping someone up. I guess it was serious back in 2006 or 07. Do they still do that?

I only remember seeing 5 or so Black women during my trip. There were a bunch of lite skin, asian, other thans and white women but I didn't see that many Black women.

What was weird tho was having a debate about which one of the Rev Run Simmons girls were prettier at a stop light and Angela Simmons pulled up next to our car during the middle of the debate... she won by default.

12670945, 1. Black women hate it the most. 2. White men love it the most.
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue Dec-09-14 07:13 PM
Black men range from loving it to being kind of "whatever" on it. Most Black women I know more-so tolerate it than love it, when speaking for those who aren't natives. Most native women who went to college elsewhere (HBCU's, NY) end up not liking it as much as those who stay for college and never move away.

But umm...too much to really say. I'd say that no one ever has the same experience here, and that you can come 8-10 times and STILL not really get a true L.A. experience, since there's really no such thing as one. If you do all the tourist shit, the natives will say it wasn't real. If you only do hood stuff, people with money will say it wasn't real and that you had a limited experience. If you do all the "middle class native" stuff, such as things in the South Bay or even Long Beach, transplants say "that's boring, nobody even goes there."

When it comes to Black folks in this era of L.A...I feel we're a bit too liberal, and that many of us value diversity over anything Black, to the point that it hurts us. Being diverse is a great thing...but it's wild because there's literally NO poor Whites here as in most places...so we have an extremely blurred view of Black vs White. So many of us feel subconsciously inferior because we never see Whites struggling within their own neighborhoods...only the homeless ones. And we see how much different a Beverly Hills/Bel Air/Palisades looks compared to Inglewood/Hawthorne/South Central or even Baldwin Hills, where the Houses look nice, but the shopping areas are still suspect.

We have two completely different sides of good looking women....those who look good as a career (actress/model/fitness)...and those who look good but are strictly professional. And it's much harder to find that second group, because they are low key and not always on the "scene...." but when you find them, they're actually more down to earth than those in Atlanta, DC, and NY, especially for Black women.
12670953, there's poor white people. they're currently moving into mid-city.

no they are not. most them fools are trust fund babies, or white folk who look like middling hipsters and own the condos and "multipurpose spaces" opening on the corner
12670998, Eh, I doubt they're actually poor
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue Dec-09-14 08:25 PM
Like, the fact that they're moving in and that area is so close to prime areas like Mid-Wilshire show they aren't poor. And even still, that's too recent to really change folks mind.

I feel like within the areas most of us go to, Lawndale had the poorest whites, and even they are like lower-middle and nowhere near welfare level. Hawthorne right next door has those trailers, and those have some lower class ones, but not enough to really cause impact.

I compare it to the South, where those "Wal-Mart breeds" are. Although I do believe it when they say poor Blacks live in inner cities, and poor whites are usually in rural areas. And I still feel like L.A's "poor Blacks" aren't even close to as poor as they are in other cities. It costs a lot to live in some of our least desired areas.
12670954, that's an interesting perspective on LA Blacks

I've been out here for 6 years now and I can attest to the fact that the black women are so much more down to earth out here than other part of the US. I found my wife out here. She's gorgeous, has a nice career, driven, independent, etc. I may've gotten lucky, sure, but her girlfriends and female family members are the kinda the exact same way. Most black women I've met out here are that way. I think its because its hard to be stuck up when there are 1000 other equally or even better looking females available.

If I had a car and more money, my experience in this city would be the shit. June will be 3 years and there isnt much I really hate aside from the party crowds with people carrying on a totally opposite lifestyle from me

Kiss n Grind is a perfect example. I first went in 09, and OOONLY knew bc of Mz Ashton. Not a single person I knew was familiar with it. I get there and was blown away, almost to where I didn't love it bc it was so foreign to me. I walk in and the DJ is playing "Everything is fair" at 12:30....huh???? And people are dancing...and actually Black???? N it was super casual, in an era that we were used to wearing dress clothes to clubs bc they wouldn't let us in otherwise.

Years later, more n more "regular" folks found out, n it got to where Kid Capri DJ'd once, stopped the music, and asked "do yall want me to go radio?? Or can I play my Hip Hop?" bc they regular ass crowd had dominated and weren't responding as hard to classics as they used to.

This happens often here....word gets out about certain events, and the original essence is killed. Difference btwn NY is that NY has a bigger demand for the eclectic type of events, and they can stay pure much longer.
12671051, damn, true
Posted by astralblak, Tue Dec-09-14 10:31 PM
kind of what happened with Low End, but it feels to still have most of its essence because it caters to niche music, yet it's just a "scene" to be at now a days. way too crowded

The vibes (and the ladiiiiies) were soooo dope years back.

I got put on to Kiss n Grind by Fusicology's listings, which always comes through on the fly underground tip as I'm sure you know. I can't remember the last time I was there though - when Skillz hosted maybe.

12671111, yeah you're right. people are always there to get down
Posted by rawsouthpaw, Wed Dec-10-14 01:23 AM
and i'm hella glad it's still around in whatever form it takes. there was some absolute goddesses in the spot though, dayum.
12671088, Haha, I think I ran into you at that particular KnG w/ Capri
Posted by Solaam, Wed Dec-10-14 12:37 AM
I feel what youre saying about the crowd.

I still liked it though because that was the only time I was around a big group of almost ALL black folk in LA.
Other spots like the DO-over is cool but.. yeah.

LA is a great city but it can be a jarring transition when the previous city you lived in has a large number of black folk.

when that shit was at crane's it was amazing.
I literally saw eve and dmx come in there with no shirt on and they were playing 80s funk shit like kleeer "tonight"
and it had free food
I brought my mama to that shit.
when they moved that shit to lure, it just got too crazy.
it was getting crazy before, but now its like a party in vegas.

bunch of neo bohos trying to hang around miguel, his fine ass woman, and jack davey. jam backed shoulder to shoulder. two hour waits. to be shoulder to shoulder

back when my friend told me about it in 06, it was already on its way out

a few really cool creative people and a bunch of other folk wishing and pretending to be cool
12671454, i haven't been in like 2 years. before that i got kicked out.
Posted by now or never, Wed Dec-10-14 01:02 PM
I had been in line for like an hour and a half and snuck in
somebody snitched and like 5 mins later the bouncer came in and found me and threw a nigga out
now that I think about it I cant believe I wanted to get in that bad.
it was more the principle of it tho, just because I literally used to go every sunday for like 3 or 4 summers

And the only wack experience I had was when I attempted to do something very typically "Hollywood" that I didn't want to do in the first place (had a friend who was at a party at the W, said he could get us on the list, we waited outside for 2 hours and never got in, blah).

Otherwise, like everyone else has said, it's so diverse and has so much to offer that it's almost hard to sum up. Great food, dope weather, lots of cultural experiences, concerts everywhere, and tons of women. I don't regret a thing about the move yet.
12671092, Real talk. This type of shit almost always sucks.

Unless it's a absolutely sure thing that you'll get in. My wife used to do a lot of magazine writing and I'd go with her to events like that because it was part of her job and free booze, but I'd always end up like, "I would never put any effort at all to get into this."

12671189, This is a great post, actually.

Posted by kinetic20, Wed Dec-10-14 10:18 AM
if we had moved to LA instead of the bay back in 05 i think we wld still be there
i had misconceptions in my head at the time and picked the bay
which i abhor now
life wld be completely different, but i wldnt be as cold
LA is the only place other than chicago i cld live full time
12671642, please elaborate on what it is you abhor about the bay
Posted by kevb, Wed Dec-10-14 02:40 PM
also, what town do you reside?

we're moving to Berkeley next summer and i like to her from all perspectives on people's likes, loves, dislikes, and hate about the bay

thanks

my first time in Inglewood i was surprised by the citrus trees. but then i figured those aren't so different from the apple tree that grew in my parents' backyard. still, it just seemed so exotic - to be able to go pick lemons and oranges and grapefruit from a tree in one's backyard in the city.
12671365, i got a lemon tree in my backyard.

12671318, shocking but true: LA has a subway and it's not bad
Posted by j., Wed Dec-10-14 11:37 AM
I lived for a year a couple of blocks off the red line in little armenia

It's a very convenient way to get say to staples, or downtown in general, or East Los, even Long Beach.

The only part I didn't like was it didn't extend to the west side

I appreciated not losing my mind in traffic most of the time tho, the 101 during rush hour: kill me

12671324, In my limited experience, traffic isn't as bad as people say
Posted by John Forte, Wed Dec-10-14 11:42 AM
I've been on the 101 and 405 during rush hour, and it has nothing on The Beltway, BQE, or Kennedy/Dan Ryan.
12671338, sheeeeeeeeit
Posted by kinetic20, Wed Dec-10-14 11:51 AM
you can get from montrose to the loop - sorry now known as the jane byrne interchange -- on the kennedy in 40 minutes even in heavy traffic
LA is ridiculous
i have sat in cars for HOURS at 1 in the afternoon on a sunday
fck no
no comparison to chicago
at all

>I've been on the 101 and 405 during rush hour, and it has
>nothing on The Beltway, BQE, or Kennedy/Dan Ryan.
12671342, Montrose to the loop is like 7 or 8 highway miles
Posted by John Forte, Wed Dec-10-14 11:56 AM
40 min for 7 miles is pretty bad. Before the switch to open-road tolling, it could easily take over an hour to get to O'hare from the loop.
12671369, in LA it can be damn near 40 mins before you even get on expressway
Posted by kinetic20, Wed Dec-10-14 12:20 PM
at least that has been my experience
and 40 mins is like brutal, accident type traffic from montrose, not every day
even in rush hour its like 22 mins
12671376, that's because you have not lived on that thing in the last year
Posted by astralblak, Wed Dec-10-14 12:24 PM
they have been adding a lane on both sides, and they knocked down a bridge and it will go on until the end of 2015.

20 - 35 mile commutes have turned into 2 hour affairs at random points of morning or night; spilling into Sepulveda back logged from Wilshire to Ventura

a second cousin works for the company that initiated the project and he said the community meetings have been CRAZY. men and women having to be escorted out claiming they are gunna sue the city

me, my lady, and cousin have all had to pee into water bottles and coffee cups just stuck on the 405

i want to write a story when in alien race comes to Earth just to destroy it and utopia emerges in the aftermath

on weekdays 11-2, maybe 3 its open and moves

weekends can be super quick

but with the construction, one never knows
12671586, I agree that the Beltway/DC traffic is worse.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Dec-10-14 02:12 PM
I've had to take both the 405/101 and the Beltway during rush hour. The only truly awful parts in LA are the on-ramps (the one car at a time can back shit up in a huge way certain times of day) and the 405/101 intersection (which truly may be the worst place on earth if you catch it at peak hours). But generally, you creep along, and most places have exits/side roads that are more than manageable.

I've never felt as helpless in a car as I felt at 5 PM on the Beltway.
